Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen __ Aug 1895

Since our last death has robbed us of another jewel. Mr. J. A. Puryear departed this life on last Sunday, August 11, 1895, at 9 a. m. He has been sick for several weeks and his recovery has been despaired of for several weeks. Alexander was taken with typhoid fever first and then pneumonia in both lungs and suffered intensely until death came to his relief. He was an obedient son, a loving brother and a pleasant associate. He was 58 years and one week old, and had been a member of the Methodist Church for several years. The writer has known him from his (the writer’s) childhood and has never known a more moral and upright young man. He has gone to reap his reward. Sorrow not, loved ones, he is not dead but sleepeth. To the young his life is an example worthyof practice. Maywe all meet again where tears and grief are unknown. He was interred at Moriah graveyard on Monday and a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives followed the body to its last resting place. The Rev. Powers conducted the funeral services. “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” The rest of Mr. Puryear’s family are doing very well at this writing.

In Memoriam:

Since God in His infinite wisdom has removed from our midst one of our beloved members and coworkers, Mrs. Edwin Reed, Whereas by her death we the Mt. Moriah Ladies Aid Society have lost a loving friend who was a faithful and loyal member whose influence will live on. Whereas her happy sunny disposition, and her many Christian characteristics endeared her to a host of sorrowing friends and relatives who will always remember “Our Eula Belle” for her beautiful life, and her constant discharge of her spiritual duty. She was always ready to speak a kind loving word to all with whom she came in contact. We miss her presence among us. Therefore, be it resolved: first that the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Mt. Moriah has lost a faithful member, and a zealous Ladies Aid Worker.
