Mary Elizabeth Puryear Reed, widow of the late Alex Reed, died at her home on the Vale Mills Road, Thursday April 29. Burial was at Moriah Friday, April 30, with funeral services conducted by Rev. T. E. Hudson, a long time friend of the family. Mrs. Reed is survived by three children, Circuit Court Clerk Carson Reed, Miss Nina Reed, and Mrs. William Miles.

Obituary:

Mrs. M. J. Reed died Thursday and was buried Friday at Moriah. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Sam Eshmon of Lawrenceburg. Mrs. Reed had long been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was about 82 years of age. She was the widow of Robert Reed, who died several years ago. Children surviving are: Ed and Alex Reed and Mrs. Quarles T. Parker of Pulaski, R. L. Reed of Texas, Mrs. Walker of Oklahoma and Mrs. Wheeler of Lawrenceburg. Mrs. Reed had been active in religious work in her younger days.

Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen 18 Apr 1907

Robert Carson Reed, ofMoriah, died Thursday morning and was buried from the church where he had so long been on of the leaders, Friday at 11 o’clock with funeral services conducted by Rev. S. H. Eshman. Mr. Reed was born August 3, 1829 so he lacked only a few months of being 78 years of age. His long useful life was spent in the community where he was born. He was widely known and generally loved and honored as an honest Christian gentleman. R. C. Reed was the son of Weakley Reed, who was the first white child born in Giles County. Robert Reed, Sr., came with his family very early to occupy a large tract of land which had been given Col. Weakley for service in the Revolutionary War. Soon after locating here his son, Weakley Reed, was born. Weakley Reed was one of the men who organized the church at Moriah, and this was the first congregation organized as a Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Cumberland Presbytery having been reorganized as an independent body only a few weeks before Moriah was organized. Young R. C. Reed became a member of the church early in life and throughout his long life was ever faithful to the church he loved. After serving as deacon, he was ordained to the eldership and for more than forty years was a residing elder in the Moriah congregation. He was the friend alike of preacher and layman, and always seemed to know how to say the right thing to those who come to him for advice. In recent years he has been afflicted and has not been so active, but he will be greatly missed.

Obituary:

Robert Donnell Reed (son of Robert and Elizabeth) was born in the bounds of Mt. Moriah Church, Giles County, Tenn. February 16, 1819 and died February 22, 1891, aged seventy-two years and six days. His parents, who were Presbyterians, joined in organizing said church in March 1810. A few years afterward his father was made an elder. This was the first that was organized as a Cumberland Presbyterian Church. (McDonnold’s History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, page 125). Brother Donnell professed religion at a camp-meeting at Mt. Moriah, and joined that church in September, 1835. He was united in marriage to Sarah P. Braley, September 19, 1844, who died November 18, 1890. Three sons and two daughters survive them. He was ordained an elder in 1873. He was remarkably exemplary in his walk and conversation; took a deep interest in the prosperity of the church and its enterprises; was a consistent Christian, a good elder, a loving, tender husband, father, and brother; and a highly esteemed member of the Masonic fraternity, and was not long since honored by his lodge (at Bodenham) as its representative in the Grand Lodge of Tennessee, and, as evidence of his high regard for the order, he requested its burial service to be performed at his grave. He served as justice of the peace for twelve years; was school commissioneer several terms, trustee of two institutions of learning, and frequentlyrepresented his church in presbyteryand synod, and once his presbytery in the General Assembly. Brother Reed, had arranged all his business to his satisfaction; so likewise he was ready for his last summons; his sky was clear, and he felt that all was well. His end was peace. At his request a memorial service was held in the church on

the 23d inst., by the writer, assisted by the Rev. T. E. Hudson, our new pastor, then he was buried by the side of his wife, with Masonic honors. Let us cherish his memory and emulate his virtue. G. W. Mitchell.

Funeral services for Robert Newton Reed, 67, native Giles Countian, were held at 2 o’clock Thursdayafternoon at Mt. Moriah Presbyterian Church, near Pulaski, conductedbyDr. J. Clark Hensley, Baptist minister. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Mr. Reed, a resident of McMinnville several years, died suddenly of a heart attact at 5:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, January 15, at his home. Born and reared in Giles County, he was the son of the late Edward E. Reed and Annie Paisley Reed. He was twice married; his first wife, Ethel Meadows Reed, died twenty-five years ago. Mr. Reed, a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Jones Reed, also a native of this county; two daughters, Miss Annie Sue Reed and Sylvia Reed, McMinnvillle; seven sons, George Edward Reed, Norfolk, Va., Meadows Reed, McMinnville, Bobby Newton Reed, Jr., U. S. Air Corps, Billy Reed, Thomas Kidd Reed, Douglas Reed, and Richard Edwin Reed, all of McMinnville; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. S. H. Eshman, Lakeland, Fla.; and one brother, Edwin L. Mrs. Sallie Reed died at the home of her son, Levi Reed, Saturday of pneumonia, aged 76. The burial was at Mt. Moriah Sunday with services by Rev. J. S. Rice and Rev. S. H. Eshman. Mrs. Reed was a good woman who will be missed. She had been a member of the Methodist church for 50 years or more.

Sarah P. (nee Braley), wife of Elder Robert Donnell Reed, was born in Giles County, Tenn., April 2, 1830, was married September 19, 1844, professed religion at a camp meeting at Mt. Moriah church, September 1845 where about two years afterward she joined the church. Her husband, three sons, and two daughters survive her; one daughter having died, when about four years old. She fell asleep in Jesus November 18, 1890, aged sixty years, seven months, and fifteen days. Sister Reed was a “living epistle of Christ,” and died in full assurance of a home in heaven, and the blessed hope of meeting her husband and all her children at last in heaven. She was buried at Mt. Moriah, after a funeral service in the church by her pastor, attended by not less than four hundred of her sorrowing relatives and friends. “She is not dead, but sleepeth.” G. W. Mitchell, Pastor

Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen 25 Oct 1883

Mrs. Tranquilla T. Reed died of paralysis of the heart at the residence of Capt. C. P. Jones last Monday evening at 6 o’clock, aged 76 years and 7 months. Her death was very sudden. She was sitting at the fire in a chair and complained of a pain in the region of her heart and her daughter, Mrs. Jones, stepped out of the room to get some remedy. When she returned in a few minutes, she found her mother still sitting in the chair but life was extinct. Mrs. Reed was the relic of the late Carson P. Reed, one of the most prominent of the pioneer Cumberland Presbyterian preachers, known and loved for years by the people of this county. The remains were buried at Moriah at 10 o’clock Tuesday. Her daughters, Mrs. Buford and Mrs. Kirkpatrick, were summoned by telegraph from Nashville, as was also Mrs. T. M. N. Jones, who was in Nashville returning from conference.

Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen 24 Jul 1890

It is with deep sorrow that the Citizen today chronicles the death of one of its original friends and constant patrons, and one of the best citizens of Giles County. We refer to Weakly N. Reed, Esq. who was buried at Moriah last Sunday. He was before his death the oldest living native of Giles County. He was born in 1809 within a mile of where he died, and always lived within a mile of where he was born. He had been a member of the C. P. Church 65 years and an Elder 40 years. His membership has always been at Moriah.

Will N. Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Reed, died at his home near Bodenham Saturday of something like appolexy. He was found bymembers ofthe familyin bed unconscious, and never rallied, dying later in the day. It has not been long since he recovered from a severe spell of typhoid fever. Will Reed was known as one of the best boys in the county. He was recently admitted to the bar in the practice of law, and was in the law office of Maj. T. M. N. Jones until his health forced him to remain at home. The burial occurred at Moriah Sunday afternoon, services by Revs. W. J. Bruce and J. M. Ashford.

Mr. Reeves died at 9:30 o’clock Sunday night, November 18, at the home of his brother, Bill Reeves, in Columbia, following a three year period of declining health. He was born and reared in Giles County, the son of Ed Reeves, now of Ethridge, and the late Jennie Pillow Reeves. He was a member of the Baptist Church. In addition to his father, Mr. Reeves is survived by three daughters, Misses Dorothy Ann and Betty Reeves, Nashville, and Peggy Sue Reeves, Pulaski; two sons, Charles Edward Reeves, and Billy Reeves, Nashville; five sisters, Mrs. Melvin Pinkelton and Mrs. George Holder, Pulaski, Mrs. George Pierson, Columbia, Mrs. Floyd Putman, Dunlap and Mrs. Sam Knox, Ethridte; and two brothers, Perkins Reeves, Memphis, and Bill Reeves, Columbia. Simon Reeves, twenty-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Reeves, West Hill, Pulaski, died at home Monday night and was buried Tuesday at Moriah. Young Reeves was brought home Monday from Blytheville, Ark., where he was working. The report was that he had taken several tablets of bichloride of mercury, a slow but deadly poison, and followed that with a big drink of whiskey. He was rushed home from Blytheville in a dying condition, reaching home only a few hours before he passed away. He is survived by his parents and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel Long Reynolds, 80, widow of W. A. Reynolds, will be held at 2:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon at Bennett-May Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. J. Clark Hensley, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will take place in the family lot in Moriah Cemetery. Mrs. Reynolds, a lifelong resident of Giles County, went to Memphis during the holidays for a visit with her son, Gardner L. Reynolds. She died at 3 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, February 7, at a Memphis hospital after a short illness. A native of Giles County, she was born December 4, 1875, the daughter of the late William Thomas Long and Nancy Watson Long, and was a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Reynolds died a number of years ago. Mrs. Reynolds is survived by the one son, Gardner L. Reynolds; one grandson, Duane Reynolds, Memphis; and her son-in-law, Edwin L. Reed, with whom she had lived in Pulaski since the death of her daughter, Mrs. Eula Bell Reynolds Reed, about four years ago.

William Allie Reynolds, 73, well-known former merchant and police officer of Pulaski, died at his home on South Third Street at 6p. m. Tuesday after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at Bennett-May Funeral Home, the Rev. J. Clark Hensley, and the Rev. Mack Pinkelton officiating. Burial will take place in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. A native of Giles County, Mr. Reynolds was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Mary Jane Horne Reynolds. He was a former resident of the Wales Starion Community before moving to Pulaski about forty years ago. He was engaged in the clothing business, and operated a garage before serving for about eight years as a police officer for the Town of Pulaski. He was a member of the Pulaski Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Rachel Long; one daughter, Mrs. Edwin L. Reed, wife of former trustee of Giles County, one son Gardner Long, and one grandson, Duane Allison Reynolds of Jacksonville, Fla.

Bobby Rich, 19-year-old Pulaski youth, was killed Monday night when the car he was driving ran under the back end of a milk truck he was attempting to pass at Stivesville, Tenn. His three companions, Glenda Story, Beverly Berry and J. D. Coffman, III, were injured. Paul Dugger of Lynnville, driver of the truck, was unhurt. Young Rich graduated last month from Giles County High School, where he was a football star. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Solon Rich; three sisters, Miss Patsy Rich, Mrs. Robert Storey, and Mrs. Robert Ingram, all of Pulaski; and two brothers, Thomas Rich of Columbia, Tenn. and Sgt. Wade Rich with the air force at Roswell, N. Mex. Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. today at Bennett-May Funeral Home in Pulaski, bythe Rev. Albert Dimmock and the Rev. Mack Pinkelton. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery in Giles County.
