Mr. James (Tommy) Strickland, 81, of Pulaski died August 31, 1996, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Services were held Monday at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home with burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Martha Strickland of Pulaski; and sons, G. W., Calvin and Roger Strickland, all of Pulaski, and Donald Strickland of Spring Hill.

Joe E. Strickland, 28, native of Giles County, was hit by an automobile and killed in Los Angeles, Calif., October 8. The accident occurred while he was attempting to step into his car. He had recently moved to Los Angeles from Detroit where he had resided for a number of years. He was the son of John Wesley Strickland who survives, and the late Mrs. Lena Willa Johns Strickland. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Clarence Stewart, pastor of the First Baptist Church, in the chapel of Bennett-May Funeral Home at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Oct. 12. Burial was in Moriah Cemetery. Survivors in addition to his father include his wife, Mrs. Brenda Sue Strickland, a grandmother, Mrs. Ella Johns, three brothers, James, John Wesley, and Jerry Wayne Strickland, all of Mt. Julian, Mich., and four sisters, Mrs. Linda

Mrs. Lena W. Strickland, 58, died Saturday, February 25, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. Services were conducted Tuesday morning, February 28, at 10:30, with the Rev. Clarence Stewart, officiating. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Mrs. Strickland was born February 19, 1909, in Giles County, the daughter of the late Mrs. Noah Johns and the late Mr. Johns. She had lived in Pulaski for many years before moving to Ridgely, Tenn., with her family. Lillian Ward Sweeneydied yesterday at Hillside Hospital. She was 74 years old. Visitation will be held from 6-9pm tomorrow at Bennett-May Funeral Home. Services will be held Friday at 2pm at Bennett-May with burial to follow in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Walker of Pulaski and Judy Palomino of South Carolina. She is survived by a son, BobbyThornton of Pulaski. Two sisters survive, Annie Swanson and Nellie Carroll, both of North Carolina. A brother, James Ward of North Carolina also survives. Funeral services for Cpl. Charles Tarpley, 26, Giles Countysoldier stationed at Camp Crowder, Mo., were held at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon at Bennett-May Funeral Home in Pulaski by Virgil Bradford, Church of Christ minister. Burial was in Moriah Cemetery west of Pulaski. Tarpley, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Tarpley of Pigeon Roost community, died Friday of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Goodman, Mo. Cpl. Tarpley was a student of Giles County High School before entering the U. S. Navy in 1942. While in the Navy he served in the Pacific theater. He entered the Army September 13, 1949, and served in Trieste, Italy, three years and was serving his second enlistment in the Army and was stationed at Camp Crowder, Mo., at the time of the accident. In addition to his parents, he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Owen R. Johnson, Philo, Ohio, Mrs. Clarence H. Cole, Jr., Pulaski, Mrs. J. S. Pierce and Miss Lema Tarpley, both of Pulaski; one brother, Robert Tarpley, U. S. Navy; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Lema Peden of Nashville; five nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services for TommyTarpley, Jr., 24, who died at 1:40 o’clock Mondaymorning, March

A lifelong resident of the county, he was born on October 17, 1925, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Tarpley, Sr., who survive. He was a veteran of the Pacific area, having served during the late war in the U. S. Navy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tarpley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lee Burrows Tarpley; one three-year-old daughter, Hazel Tarpley; four sisters, Mrs. Owen Johnson, Philo, Ohio, and Misses Lema, Roberta and Ella Tarpley, all of Pulaski; two brothers, Robert Tarpley, Pulaski, and Charlie Tarpley, U. The spirit of Mrs. J. A. Tatum took its flight August 27^th. She was a good neighbor and always ready to lend a helping hand in sickness. She was a loving mother and will be missed in her home and community, she was a consistent member of the Methodist Church and attended services regularly as long as she was able. She was 77 years and 4 months old. Funeral services were at Mt.Moriah. She was laid to rest by her husband who passed away several years ago. She leaves to mourn her loss eight children as follow: William, Mitchell Leslie, Edgar, Ozro, Mrs. John Hayes, Mrs. J. T. Walls, and Mrs. H. W. Russell and a host of grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers and granddaughters carried the flowers. Love and sympathy are extended to the bereaved ones. A large crowd attended the funeral and lots of pretty flowers.

Brown Tidwell, aged 33 years, died at the home of his father, James P. Tidwell, near the fair grounds Monday. Mr. Tidwell was found dead in his chair upon the return of the family who had been away for the day. He had been subject to epilepsy ever since he was six years old and this is supposed to have caused his death. The burial was at Mount Moriah Tuesday. Although afflicted, Mr. Tidwell possessed a sound mind, was ever energetic and was of a decided mechanical turn. He was fond of reading the Bible and possessed several copies of it, and he is said to have read it from cover to cover several times. He was kind-hearted and conscientious and will be missed by those who loved him.

Squire Calloway Hardin Tidwell, familiarly called "Hard" Tidwell, died early Friday morning at his home south west of town after a lingering illness caused by a general break down of the physical powers. The burial occurred at Mt. Moriah Saturday, the obsequies being conducted by Revs. T. E. Hudson and W. H. Beasley. Squire Tidwell would have been 88 years old next December, and his life has been a strenuous one in the field of industry, he having been a hard worker all his life. Success crowned his efforts, and he leaves his posterity a handsome fortune, in addition to a name and the example of an honorable career. It is said of him, that although he was an extensive lender of money that he would never charge any one more than 6 per cent interest, and he has loaned county money at a lower rate than that. Squire Tidwell was for 20 years or more a valuable member of the County Court, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him for his honesty, hospitality and the sterling qualities of good American citizenship. He is survivedbynine children, William, Vince, Charlie, Mrs. J. W. Reed and Mrs. E. S. Neely, all who reside in Texas, Mrs. M. M. Houston, of Step, Ala., and Mesdames Tom Reed and Solon Hamlett and Ozro Tidwell of Giles County. The Citizen extends sympathy to the bereaved.
