Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen 27 Feb 1924

As announced in the Citizen last week, James P. Tidwell died Wednesday Feb. 20, in his room in Hotel Richland where he was accustomed to spend the winter. Mr. Tidwell was born in 1839 and was therefore well past 84 years of age. He was a member of one of the old families of Giles County, his grandfather having settled at the place where J. J. Zuccarello now lives, more than a hundred years ago, perhaps within a year after a treaty with the Indians opened the western half of the county to settlement. He joined the Methodist Church many years ago, and lived a consistent life. When the Civil War came on in the sixties, Mr. Tidwell like more Southern men joined the Confederate army, and made a record as a soldier of which he was always justly proud. Mr. Tidwell raised a large family, nine daughters and one son. The son, Brown Tidwell passed away several years ago, but the nine daughters still survive, all grown up and married, and all except two residents of Giles County. Mrs. M. C. Spiveylives in Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. R. S. Lovell, lives at Spring Hill, Maury County. After funeral services at the Methodist Church Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. T. E. Hudson, Rev. M. S. Kennedy and Elder J. T. Clark, the body was taken to Moriah for burial, where all deceased members of the family repose.

Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen 20 Feb 1908

Mrs. James P. Tidwell died Sunday at her residence on East Hill after little more than a week's

illness resulting from a stroke of paralysis. The burial was at Mt. Moriah Monday morning with
services by the Rev. T. C. Ragsdale and was largely attended by the relatives and friends of the

deceased. Mrs. Tidwell was born near Pulaski in 1840, and was Miss Lucy Fry, the daughter of Dr. John Fry, who removed to Missouri, where the subject of this sketch married W. P. Beavers, who was killed in the Confederate service during the Civil War, and it is related of her that she exemplified the heroic spirit of Southern womanhood in a highlydegree during that era of unrest, frequentlygoing sixtymiles to mill. After the war the familyreturned to Giles County, and here Mrs. Beavers married James P. Tidwell who survives her with the following named children: Mrs. Ed Paisley, Mrs. Rufus Lovell, Mrs. J. Frank Witherow and Brown Tidwell. Mrs. Tidwell had been a consistent member of the Methodist Church for about 35 years, and was an exceptionally good wife, mother and neighbor. The 68 years of her life have been well lived. Peace to her dust and blessed be her memory.
