Abstract
The aim of this work is a complex and independent dealing with the question of Latvian hydronymy what its etymology concerns and its relation to the system of so called ancient-European or just ancient European hydronyms. It does not want to be exhausting, it is restricted only on examples which can be relatively well found in secondary literature, but the basic hydrological net of Latvia is included.
Latvia has over 12 000 rivers, which are stretching over 38 000 kilometres, there are also about 2 256 lakes. The East Latvia, where we can find a lot of such lakes, is known as „Country of blue lakes“.
The names of rivers are listed alphabetically.
