ABSTRACT
Italian Language, Literature and Culture
This guide encompasses a curriculum for the Italian language, literature and culture class, a class designed for students who have successfully completed the New York State Regents Exam in Italian and wish to continue their language studies. This course will be culturally based, focusing on the four components of Foreign Language acquisition: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will be exposed to art, music, history, readings, poetry, film, and other culturally based literature in Italian. Higher level vocabulary and grammatical structures will be taught through these mediums. Throughout the course, students will be assessed through various assessments including oral and technology based presentations, research projects and written examinations.
This is a comprehensive document based upon Locust Valley and New York State standards for languages other than English that includes: course scope and sequence, basic outlines for each unit including topics to be discussed in class, essential vocabulary, samples of activities, sample projects and sample assessments.
This document is closely associated to the 2003 New York State Education Department document entitled Languages Other Than English: Checkpoint C Resource Guide. This handbook addresses the following key standards:
1) Students will be able to use a language other than
English for communication.
2) Students will develop cross-cultural skills and
understanding.
Italian Language, Literature and Culture
RATIONALE
This curriculum guide is designed to provide students an outlet for continuing their study of Italian beyond the New York State Regents Exam. This course has been designed to enhance the students’ skills in the four key areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking as well as to provide students an array of cultural information. The ultimate goal of this class is to expose students to a variety of vocabulary, literature, poetry, film, authentic material and projects related to each cultural topic presented. Furthermore, in utilizing this guide, it is understood that:
a) All grammar will be taught in a communicative and contextual manner, with emphasis placed on the functionality of grammar as a means towards effective communication of ideas.
b) Students will be actively engaged in cooperative learning activities with a partner or in small groups in order to consistently utilize Italian and practice the four essential skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Most grammar topics and the vocabulary lists are from the textbook Prego, an Invitation to Italian and the main cultural presentation are based on the readings from I come Italia: Aspetti di civilta’ italiana. *
c) The activities and discussion topics discussed in this curriculum are meant to serve as a guide for the instructor. Numerous resources can and should be supplemented to provide necessary variety and reinforcement.
d) Sample activities, discussion topics, vocabulary lists and projects are divided by topic.
