Original book 'Down Under' 1943 Angus and Robertson, photographic record of the 5th USAAF in Australia and the South Pacific. Damage spine and water damage to pages. Together with an original USA made 5th USAAF shoulder patch. Also a rare 5th USAAF large pocket patch as worn on the front of the flying jacket, probably made in Australia. The 5th Air Force had its early beginnings as the Philippine Department Air Force on 20 September 1941. It was renamed to the Far East Air Force (FEAF) on 28 October 1941 The FEAF fought in the Philippines at the outbreak of the Pacific War. They covered the retreat south to Java and then escaped back to Australia where they played a small part in the Battle of the Coral Sea (7-8 May 1942).
