WILLIAM HOMEWOOD GRAVELY (1852-1929). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

William Homewood Gravely (1852-1929) [Epsom College 1866-1868] was the son of Thomas Gravely, surgeon, of Cowfold, Sussex, and brother of Dr John Gabbitas Gravely [Epsom College 1866-1870]. He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Horsham, Sussex, where he was also Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the 5th and 6th Districts of the Horsham Union.


THOMAS VALENTINE DEVEY (1852-1939). L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S. (Edin.) & L.M.

Thomas Valentine Devey (1852-1939) [Epsom College 1867-1868] was the son of Valentine Devey, surgeon, of Wolsingham, Co. Durham. He received his medical education at Edinburgh University, and went into general practice at Darlington, Co. Durham, where he was District Medical Officer to the Reath Union.


GEORGE UNDERHILL (1852-1898). L.S.A. (Lond.).

George Underhill (1852-1898) [Epsom College 1867-1869] was the son of W. L. Underhill, surgeon, of Tipton Green, Staffordshire. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, and went into general practice at Cookley, near Kidderminster, Worcestershire.


HUGH WALLIS (1852-1912). L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S., L.M. (Edin.).

Hugh Wallis (1852-1912) [Epsom College 1864-1869] was the son of Frederick Wallis, surgeon, of Bexhill, Sussex, and brother of Dr Percy Evershed Wallis [Epsom College 1864-1869]. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Alfriston, Sussex, where he served as Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for 4th District of the Eastbourne Union, and the 2nd District of the West Firle Union. He also served as an Admiralty Surgeon and Agent.


HENRY HUGH MASTER (1852- ? ). L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S. (Edin.), L.M.

Henry Hugh Master (1852- ? ) [Epsom College 1865-1866] was the son of Alfred Master, surgeon, of Norwich. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Edinburgh University, and went general practice in Ixworth, Suffolk, where he was also the Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for Thingoe Union. No record after 1908.


DUNCAN MENZIES (1852-1916). M.A., M.B., C.M. (Edin.).

Duncan Menzies (1852-1916) [Epsom College 1865-1869] was the son of Robert Menzies, surgeon, of Lambeth, South London, and brother of Archibald William Menzies [Epsom College 1862-1867], and Alexander Menzies [Epsom College 1858-1860]. He received his medical education at Edinburgh University, where he was First Prizeman in Midwifery and Diseases of Women. He then went into general practice at Blandford Square, London. He was a member of the General Council of Edinburgh University.


PERCY EVERSHED WALLIS (1852-1921). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Percy Evershed Wallis (1852-1921) [Epsom College 1864-1868] was the son of Frederick Wallis, surgeon, of Bexhill, and brother of Arthur Henry Wallis [Epsom College 1864-1866], and Dr Hugh Wallis [Epsom College 1864-1869]. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and went into general practice at East Grinstead, Sussex. He also served as Surgeon at the East Grinstead Hospital, and Medical Officer of Health for East Grinstead, Sussex. He was Surgeon for the East Sussex Police.


EDWARD VERDON PERRY (1852-1929). O.B.E., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Edward Verdon Perry (1852-1929) [Epsom College 1867-1869] was the son of C. H. Perry, surgeon, of Reepham, Norfolk. He received his medical education at St George’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Reepham. He also served as Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the No 1 District of the Aylsham Union; the Sparham District of the Mitford and Launditch Union; and the Grest Witchingham District of the St Faith’s Union, Norfolk. He was Medical Officer at the Red Cross Hospital, Reepham.


HARRY LUPTON (1852-1918). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Harry Lupton (1852-1918) [Epsom College 1867-1869] was the son of Sackville Lupton, surgeon, of Thame, Oxfordshire, and brother of Sackville Lupton [Epsom College 1864-1872]. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and then went into general practice at Stratford-on- Avon. He was also appointed Senior Surgeon at the Stratford-on-Avon Infirmary; Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the Alveston District and Workhouse of the Stratford-on-Avon Union, and Surgeon to the Great Western Railway. He was the author of ‘Lays of the Chase’ (Vinton, 1900).


FREDERICK SAMUEL COWAN (1852-1908). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Frederick Samuel Cowan (1852-1908) [Epsom College 1866-1867] was the son of S. B. Cowan, surgeon, of Bath, and brother of Benjamin Conolly Cowan [Epsom College 1865-1867]. He received his medical education at St George’s Hospital and Vienna. He then went into general practice in Bath, and was appointed Senior Physician at the Eastern Dispensary, and Senior Honorary Medical Officer for the Royal United Hospital, Bath (1882-1891).


ARCHIBALD HENRY FRASER (1853- c. 1887). L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S. (Edin.), L.A.H. (Dublin).

Archibald Henry Fraser (1853- c. 1887) [Epsom College 1863-1867] was the son of A. H. Fraser, K.H.P., Surgeon-General, African Medical Service. He received his medical education at the City of Dublin and Rotunda Hospitals, and was appointed Resident Surgical Medical Officer for the City of Dublin Hospital. He was also Surgeon Major to the 40th Regiment. He then went into general practice at Witham, Essex, where he was also Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the Witham District of the Braintree Union. He died in about 1887, aged 34 years.


WILLIAM BOYTER JOHNSON (1853-1916). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

William Boyter Johnson (1853-1916) [Epsom College 1863-1868] was the son of Henry Johnson, surgeon, of York Road, South-East London, and brother of Francis Johnson [Epsom College 1873-1875]. He received his medical education at the London Hospital, and went into general practice in Northumberland Avenue, London.



MILES CARR PARTRIGE (1853-1884). L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S. (Edin.).

Miles Carr Partrige (1853-1884) [Epsom College 1867-1872. Rugby XV] was the son of W. S. Partrige, apothecary, of Bordesley Green, Birmingham, and father of Miles Wolfe Carr Partrige [Epsom College 1894-1898]. He received his medical education at Queen’s College (Birmingham University), and went into general practice at Meriden, Coventry, where he also served as Medical Officer for the Meriden District of the Meriden Union.


JOHN FRANCIS GRAYLING (1853-1923). L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S. (Edin.) & L.M.

John Francis Grayling (1853-1923) [Epsom College 1866-1870] was the son of John Grayling, surgeon, of Sittingbourne, Kent. He received his medical education at King’s College Hospital, and went into general practice at Sittingbourne, Kent.



JOHN FREDERICK ARLIDGE (1853-1932). L.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., L.M. (Edin.).

John Frederick Arlidge (1853-1932) [Epsom College 1864-1870] was the son of J. T. Arlidge, surgeon, of Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. He received his medical education at Edinburgh University, and went into general practice at Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He was also Assistant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the North Staffordshire Infirmary, and served as Surgeon Captain in the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment.


EDWIN JOHN GURDON (1853-1927). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.R.C.P. (Edin.) & L.M.

Edwin John Gurdon (1853-1927) [Epsom College 1867-1869] was the son of T. G. Gurdon, surgeon, of Boxford, Suffolk, and brother of Charles Goate Gurdon [Epsom College 1856-1860]. He received his medical education at St Thomas’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Beaumaris, Anglesey. During the First World War he served as Medical Officer in Charge of Troops at Kingsbridge, Devon. After the War he went into general practice at Thetford, Norfolk, and was Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the Hopton and Hepworth Districts of the Thetford Union, and Medical Officer of Health for Guiltcross R.D.


ARTHUR OWEN HENRY PHILLIPS (1853-1911). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Arthur Owen Henry Phillips (1853-1911) [Epsom College 1867-1869] was the son of John Phillips, surgeon, of Newcastle Emlyn, Cardigan Bay. He received his medical education at St Thomas’s Hospital, and was then employed in a number of medical appointments, including Medical Officer at Warwick Hospital, Resident Medical Officer at Swansea Hospital, and Assistant Physician at the Royal Bethlem Hospital, London. He then emigrated to Australia where he was appointed Government Medical Officer at Warwick, Queensland.


WILLIAM EDWARD CREE (1853-1939). M.D. (Durham), M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

William Edward Cree (1853-1939) [Epsom College 1866-1870] was the son of E. H. Cree, surgeon, Royal Navy, and brother of Colonel Edward Russell Cree, R.A.M.C. [Epsom College1868-1870]. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital and Durham University. After qualification, William Cree joined the Royal Navy as Assistant Surgeon and served on H.M.S. Bellerophon, Flagship, in North America and the West Indies. He served in the Navy for three years before taking up an appointment as Assistant Surgeon at the Central London Ophthalmic Hospital and Central London Throat and Ear Hospital. He later joined his father in general practice at Tavistock, Devon.


JOHN FRANCIS WOODS (1853-1947). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.), M.D. (Durham).

John Francis Woods (1853-1947) [Epsom College 1867-1870] was the son of John Woods, surgeon, of Brompton Row, London. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He was appointed Medical Superintendent of Hoxton House Asylum, London, and before that as Resident Medical Officer at the Great House Asylum, Leyton, Greater London. He was a member of the Medical Psychological Association, and a Fellow of the Hunterian Society.


JOSEPH WATSON ELLIS (1853-1940). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.), M.D. (Brux.).

Joseph Watson Ellis (1853-1940) [Epsom College 1866-1866] was the son of R. S. Ellis, surgeon, of Willingham, St Ives, Cambridgeshire. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. He was also Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the Swavesey District of the St Ives Union, and a member of the Cambridgeshire County Council.


HERBERT SLOMAN (1853-1927). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Herbert Sloman (1853-1927) [Epsom College 1865-1870. Junior Scholarship] was the son of S. G. Sloman, surgeon, of Farnham, Surrey, and brother of Dr Samuel George Sloman [Epsom College 1862-1864], the Rev. Canon Arthur Sloman [Epsom College 1863-1870], the Very Rev. Ernest Sloman, Dean of Guiana [Epsom College 1866-1873], and Dr Frederick Sloman [Epsom College 1874-1875]. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Dublin, and then went into general practice at Farnham Common, Surrey. He was Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the South District of the Farnham Union, as well as Admiralty Surgeon and Agent.


WELBY I’ANSON (1853-1938). M.B., C.M. (Edin.).

Welby I’Anson (1853-1938) [Epsom College 1866-1870] was the son of Dr T. K. I’Anson, of Whitehaven, Cumbria, brother of Frank Leonard I’Anson [Epsom College 1872-1875], and Brian Walker I’Anson [Epsom College 1876-1878]. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Whitehaven, Cumbria. He was also Visiting Surgeon at the Whitehaven Infirmary, Cumberland, and an Admiralty Surgeon and Agent.


ERASMUS BUSH (1853-1940). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.), J.P.

Erasmus Bush (1853-1940) [Epsom College 1867-1870] was the son of William Bush, surgeon, of Bath. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Kensington, London, where he was also an Honorary Medical Officer for the Richmond Dispensary. He was a J.P. for the County of Wiltshire.


HENRY TODD (1854-1908). L.S.A. (Lond.).

Henry Todd (1854-1908) [Epsom College 1864-1869] was the son of J. W. Todd, surgeon, of Mile End Road, East London, and brother of Dr William Todd [Epsom College 1864-1866]. He received his medical education at the London Hospital, and went into general practice at Mile End Road, East London.


PERCY OCTAVIUS HAYNES (1854-1951). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Percy Octavius Haynes (1854-1951) [Epsom College 1866-1868] was the son of J. B. Haynes, F.R.C.S., of Evesham, Worcestershire, and brother of Dr Frederick Harry Haynes, F.R.C.P. [Epsom College 1856-1860], and Dr Horace Eyre Haynes, J.P. [Epsom College 1859-1862]. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Birmingham. He later moved to a practice at Urchfont, near Devizes, Wiltshire. He was sometime Ship’s Surgeon for the Marine Society’s vessel, H.M.S. Warspite, and Visiting Surgeon at the South Dispensary, Liverpool.


ROBERT RUSSELL HARPER (1854-1924). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

Robert Russell Harper (1854-1924) [Epsom College 1867-1867] was the son of Robert Harper, surgeon, of Holbeach, Lincolnshire. He received his medical education at St Thomas’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Holbeach, and later at Hampstead, North London. During the First World War he was Medical Superintendent and Surgeon of the No. 1 Birmingham War Hospital.


RICHARD DAVIES (1854-1888). M.R.C.S. (Eng.).

Richard Davies (1854-1888) [Epsom College 1866-1872. Rugby XV] was the son of R. W. Davies, surgeon, of Aston, Warwickshire. He received his medical education at Queen’s College (Birmingham University), and went into general practice at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He was Medical Officer for the Cheltenham Workhouse. He died in 1888, aged 34 years.


EDWIN TEYNHAM ROPER (1854-1919). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), LL.D., F.R.G.S.

Edwin Teynham Roper (1854-1919) [Epsom College 1868-1871] was the son of A. G. Roper, F.R.C.S., of Croydon, Surrey, and brother of George Roper [Epsom College 1860-1863]. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and went into general practice in Brighton, Sussex. He was previously Clinical Assistant at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, and the Victoria Hospital for Children, London. He was Visiting Surgeon at the Halliford Asylum.


FREDERICK WILLIAM SLATER CULHANE (1854-1920). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

Frederick William Slater Culhane (1854-1920) [Epsom College 1865-1873. Watts Science Prize. Carr Exhibition] was the son of David Culhane, surgeon, of Dartford, Kent. He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Hastings, Sussex, where he was also the Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the 2nd and 3rd Districts of the Hastings Union.


GEORGE ABRAHAM WALKER (1854-1903). M.D., C.M. (Aberdeen), M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

George Abraham Walker (1854-1903) [Epsom College 1867-1871] was the son of W. H. Walker, surgeon, of Aldbrough, Darlington, brother of Dr Frederick William Walker [Epsom College 1872-1875], and Walter Henry Walker [Epsom College 1873-1875]. He received his medical education at both Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities, before going into general practice at Aldborough, Darlington, Co. Durham. He was also Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the Aldbrough District of the Richmond Union. He was sometime Surgeon for the Cunard Steamship Company.


JAMES POINTON (1854-1920). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

James Pointon (1854-1920) [Epsom College 1868-1871] was the son of James Pointon, surgeon, of Huyton, Lancashire. He received his medical education at the Liverpool School of Medicine, and was subsequently appointed Demonstrator of Anatomy at the Liverpool School of Medicine. He then went into general practice at Southport, Lancashire, and was Medical Officer for the Northern Dispensary, Liverpool. He was sometime Surgeon on the R.M.S. Lucania (Cunard Steamship Company).



ERNEST SUTTON SMITH (1854-1923). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

Ernest Sutton Smith (1854-1923) [Epsom College 1868-1872. Rugby XV, Cricket XI. Carr Exhibition] was the son of a doctor [details unknown]. He won an Entrance Scholarship to University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Margate, Kent.


ALGERNON DUTTON BRENCHLEY (1854-1940). M.D. (Aberdeen), C.M., M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

Algernon Dutton Brenchley (1854-1940) [Epsom College 1867-1869] was the son of H. C. Brenchley, surgeon, of Denmark Hill, South London, and brother of Horace Brenchley [Epsom College 1871-1881], and Charles Albert Brenchley [Epsom College 1878-1884]. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital and Aberdeen University, and then went into general practice at Denmark Hill, London. He was also Consulting Physician at the Camberwell Provident Dispensary; Master of the Worshipful Company of Apothecaries (1924-1925), and Senior Past Master and Father of the Court of Assistants, Worshipful Company of Apothecaries.


JOHN WALLIS BARRON MASON (1854-1930). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.), M.D. (Brux.).

John Wallis Barron Mason (1854-1930) [Epsom College 1869-1871] was the son of J. W. Mason, surgeon, of Regent’s Park, London, and father of Dr Charles Leslie Mason [Epsom College 1907-1912]. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, where he won the Senior Broderip Scholarship. After medical qualification he was appointed Resident Obstetric Assistant at the Middlesex Hospital, and then went into general practice at Regents Park, London. He was a member of the West London Medico-Chirurgical Society.


EDWARD GEORGE KEIGHLEY MARKS (1854-1904). M.D., M.Ch. (Ire.), L.R.C.S.I., L.M.R.C.P.I.

Edward George Keighley Marks (1854-1904) [Epsom College 1866-1867] was the son of Dr A. H. Marks, of Dublin, and brother of Charles Ferdinand Marks, M.D. [Epsom College 1866-1867]. He received his medical education at the Royal University of Ireland, Dublin, and then went into general practice at Dublin, where he was Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator, Dublin. He later emigrated to Australia where he was employed as a Surgeon at the Herberton and Aramac Hospitals, Queensland, Australia. No further details known.


HERBERT EDWARD DANIELL (1854-1924). M.B., C.M. (Edin.).

Herbert Edward Daniell (1854-1924) [Epsom College 1868-1871] was the son of A. H. Daniell, surgeon, of Kegworth, Leicestershire, and brother of Dr Charles Henry Daniell [Epsom College 1870-1871]. He received his medical education at Edinburgh University, and went into general practice at Wokingham, Berkshire.


GEORGE HALES PARRY (1854-1934). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Edin.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

George Hales Parry (1854-1934) [Epsom College 1866-1870] was the son of George Parry, surgeon, of Docking, Norfolk, and brother of William Turner Parry [Epsom College 1866-1870]. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Docking, Norfolk, where he was also Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the Docking District and Workhouse, Docking Union. He was a member of the Norfolk and Norwich Medico-Chirurgical Society.


REGINALD NORMAN (1854-1894). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Reginald Norman (1854-1894) [Epsom College 1869-1870] was the son of G. B. Norman, surgeon, of Ilkeston, Yorkshire. He received his medical education at St George’s Hospital, and was appointed Assistant Demonstrator in Anatomy. He then went into general practice at Pont Street, London, where he was also Medical Officer to the Brompton and Knightsbridge Provident Dispensary. He was sometime Resident Medical Officer at Las Conchillas, Uruguay.


ALEXANDER LLEWELLYN WILLIAMS (1854-1919). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Edin.), L.M.

Alexander Llewellyn Williams (1854-1919) [Epsom College 1866-1869] was the son of Dr H. l. Williams of Kensington, and brother of Henry John Carnegie Williams [Epsom College 1863-1865]. He received his medical education at St George’s Hospital, Paris and Dublin Universities, and then went into general practice at Kensington, London. He was a member of the West London Medico-Chirurgical Society.


WILLIAM JOHNSTONE (1854-1939). L.R.C.S. (Edin.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

William Johnstone (1854-1939) [Epsom College 1865-1871] was the son of John Johnstone, surgeon, of Russell Street, Liverpool. He won an Entrance Scholarship to University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Birkenhead, Cheshire.


ARTHUR CROSBY BRETT JONES (1854-1936). M.R.C.S. (Eng.).

Arthur Crosby Brett Jones (1854-1936) [Epsom College 1865-1869] was the son of Dr Edward Jones, of Sydenham, South London. He received his medical education at St George’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Chatham, Kent.


SIDNEY ROBERT HARVEY MATHEWS (1854-1925). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).

Sidney Robert Harvey Mathews (1854-1925) [Epsom College 1868-1872] was the son of Robert Mathews, surgeon, of Bickley, Kent. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Bickley, Kent. He was also an Honorary Medical Officer for Bromley Hospital.


FRANCIS GOODCHILD (1854-1883). M.B. (Lond.), M.R.C.S. (Eng.).

Francis Goodchild (1854-1883) [Epsom College 1869-1871. Rugby XV. MacFarlane Cup. Watts Science Prize] was the son of John Goodchild, surgeon, of Ealing, West London. He received his medical education at St George’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Ealing. He died by his own hand, aged 29 years.


HORACE SWORDER (1854-1937). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.), L.S.A. (Lond.).

Horace Sworder (1854-1937) [Epsom College 1867-1870] was the son of Thomas Sworder, solicitor, of Luton, Bedfordshire, and brother of Arthur Thomas Sworder [Epsom College 1867-1869]. He received his medical education at St Mary’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Luton, Bedfordshire. He was Medical Officer of Health for Luton, and Founder (1899) and first Medical Superintendent of the Luton Children’s Hospital (1900-1916). He conceived and organised the ‘Children’s Guild of Kindness,’ which proved invaluable in raising finance for the hospital. Dr Sworder was a member of the Court of the Society of Apothecaries, President of the South Midlands Branch of the British Medical Association, and Chairman of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Division of the B.M.A.


HERBERT PERCY MILLER (1855-1935). M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.), M.D. (Brux.).

Herbert Percy Miller (1855-1935) [Epsom College 1869-1873] was the son of Dr C. M. Miller, of Stoke Newington [this is a very uncertain entry in the Epsom College Register for 1893], and brother of Francis Sidney Miller [Epsom College 1869-1873]. He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Stoke Newington, London. He was also Senior Clinical Assistant at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital, Moorfields, and a member of the Ophthalmological Society of London.


HENRY WRIGHT YATE (1855-1880). M.R.C.S. (Eng.).

Henry Wright Yate (1855-1880) [Epsom College 1866-1875. Rugby XV. Cricket XI. MacFarlane Cup] was the son of Frederick Yate, surgeon, of Godalming, Surrey, and brother of Charles Frederick Yate [Epsom College 1856-1864], and Dr Edward Yate, F.R.C.S. [Epsom College 1858-1866]. The details of his medical career are not known, but while serving as a surgeon on H.M.S. Patroclus, he was accidentally shot while in a boat off Shanghai in 1879. He died a year later, aged 25 years.

Herbert Francis Montagu Pope (1855-1938) [Epsom College 1866-1872] was the son of P. M. Pope, surgeon, of West Malling, Kent, and brother of the Rev. Montagu Mercer Pope, M.A. [Epsom College 1863-1871], Philip Montagu Pope [Epsom College 1866-1868]. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and went into general practice at West Malling, Maidstone, Kent. He was also Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the 1st District and Workhouse of the Malling Union, Kent.
