Henry Thomas Turpin, one of the oldest and best know resident of the county (Pulaski), living on the Leas Mine Road, about 2 miles from Hiwassie, died Saturday. Death was due to paralysis, he having been stricken on Friday while about his duties near the house. For a number of years he has been overseer of the poor in Hiwassie District.
His aged widow (Lutitia S. Showalter Turpin) and several children all away from home survive him. He was about 75 years of age. The funeral service was held Sunday, the body being buried in the cemetery at Max Creek.

TYSON, Joanna Lee Bentley, 66, of 4538 Old Tavern Road, Pulaski, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2003. She was born on March 25, 1936 in Pulaski and was the daughter of the late Charles R. Bentley and Mary Bryant Bentley. She was preceded and welcomed to Heaven by her three grandchildren, Katie Bryant, Nathan and Justin. She was a graduate of Maury High School Class of 1955 and resided in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach area and retired to her home in Pulaski. She was an active member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a member of the Good Neighbor Club. She would have celebrated her 48th wedding anniversary on March 26, 2003. Surviving are husband, T. Grant Tyson, Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Mike Carey, Ann and Brett Paciulli; son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Lori Tyson; sister and brother-in-law, Melba and Billy Price; grandchildren, Jesse, Jeremy, Megan, Channing, Blake, Tyler and Meredith. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Family Worship Center (First Pentecostal Holiness Church) Memorial Drive, Pulaski with Dr. C.R. Conner officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski. Visiting will be Tuesday evening from Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. The family wishes that memorials be made to the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Memorial Drive, Pulaski, Va. 24301. UMBERGER Harry Garfield, Jr., 82, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, January 12, 2000 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Harry G., Sr. and Lois Topham Umberger and was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He retired from the Keebler Biscuit company with 25 years of service and was the former manager of the Rural Retreat Lake for seven years. He was also formerly a school bus driver and was a U.S. Navy Veteran. He is survived by, his wife of 62 years, June Hampton UMBERGER, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Sonny SILVERS of Vinton and Tess and Buddy UMBERGER of Forest; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Diane UMBERGER of Wytheville; six grandchildren, Jeffrey UMBERGER, Karen SILVERS, Amy SKAFF, Andy SILVERS, Chip UMBERGER and Cheryl ALDERMAN; six great-grandchildren, Sydney UMBERGER, Logan SKAFF, Chelsea UMBERGER, Haley ALDERMAN, Joshua ALDERMAN and Allison ALDERMAN; two sisters, Mary WHITE of Wytheville and Emily ROW of Crockett; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Steven Ridenhour officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday or at the residence at any time. Georgia Blankenship Underwood, 83 of the Little Creek Community, Dublin went to be with the Lord, Friday, June 27, 2003 from Asbury Place, Wytheville. She was born August 30, 1919 in Giles County, Va., the daughter of the late Millard Filmore and Bessie Isora Radford Blankenship. Also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Victor Underwood.
She is survived by one brother, Wade D. Blankenship and wife Wanda, Bland; one sister, Sadie White, Bland; brothers-in-law, Hobert Clark, Ballard, W. Va., Dailey Underwood, Pulaski, Clifford Underwood, Dublin; sisters-in-law, Opal Deck, Dublin, Alva Suttle, Dublin, Vivian Waldron, Narrows; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at the A. Vest and Sons Funeral Home, White Gate with the Rev. Lawrence Nuchols officiating. Burial in the Hunter Cemetery, Alum Spring, Va. Visitation held at the funeral home Sunday from 6-8 p.m.

VANCE, Harold Edward, 72, of 187 Sinking Creek Road, Pembroke, died at his home Friday morning, April 4, 2003. Born in King, West Virginia on February 16, 1931, he was a son of the late Kenneth M. and Blanche Kale Vance. He was a retired dispatcher for Norfolk-Southern Railroad in Roanoke and was a member of Pembroke First United Methodist Church. Two brothers, Carl and Virgil Vance, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Oma Toler Vance; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Ronald Gupton of Pulaski, Barbara and Kevin Dunbar of Goodview; two grandsons, Nathaniel and Matthew Dunbar; a brother, Kenneth Vance of Flat Rock, N.C.; and several sisters and brothers-in-law. Memorial services will be conducted Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 3 p.m. in the Pembroke First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill McClung, and the Rev. Raymond Kelley officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. The Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke is serving the Vance family.

Everett Wooling Vaughan, 93, of Pulaski, died late Friday evening June 13, 2003 in Pulaski Community Hospital. Born February 17, 1910 in Pulaski, he was the son of the late Minnie R. Vier Vaughan and George Letcher Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pulaski, and was a Veteran of the United States Army having served in W.W.II., and was a retired foreman in the maintenance department at Radford Army Ammunition Plant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Holliday Vaughan; three brothers, Julian Vaughan, Eugene Vaughan, and Alvin Vaughan; one half brother, George Waddell, a half sister, Cleo McKim; and one sister, Omah V. Schrader. He is survived by one son, Daryle D. and his wife Helen Vaughan of Woodbridge, Va.; and one daughter, Violet V. Napier of Fredericksburg, Va. Also survived by five grandchildren, Norma Shull, Anita Thorpe, Michael Napier, Mark Vaughan, and Timothy Vaughan, ten great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 18, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pulaski with the Rev. Dr. C.R. Conner officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski. Visiting will be anytime Tuesday after 4 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Arrangements by Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, Pulaski.

VEST, Mary Emily Hetherington, 80, of Dublin, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at
Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born October 5, 1920, in Madison, W.Va.,
the daughter of the late Archibald and Flora Bruce Gillespie. She was also
preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Hetherington. She was a
member of the Dublin United Methodist Church and the White Gate Ruritan
Club. She is survived by her husband, James (Jack) Vest; one son and
daughter-in-law, John and Donna Hetherington, Lexington, Tenn.; two
daughters, Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington, Roanoke, and Vicki Hetherington,
Salem; two stepdaughters, Judy Feaganes and husband, Otis, Staunton, and
Dorothy L. Vest, Marion; two grandchildren, Shawna and Chad Hetherington,
Lexington, Tenn.; one great-grandson, Tyler Hetherington, Lexington, Tenn.;
special friends, Emogene Cullip, Herbert and Carol Vest. Funeral services
will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White
Gate, with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Burial in the Mechanicsburg
Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. Visiting will be at the funeral home Monday after 1

VEST, James Jackson, (Jack), 91, of Dublin, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at
New River Valley Medical Center. He was born July 5, 1905 at White Gate, Va.
the son of the late John Covington and Julia Thompson Vest. He was also
preceded in death by his wives, Willie Peery Vest and Mary Gillespie
Hetherington Vest; a daughter, Barbara V. Johnson; a brother, Luther Powell
Vest; a half sister, Lucille Buchanan. He was a member of the Mt. Zion
United Methodist Church, the White Gate Ruritan Club, was retired from
Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and was a life long farmer. He was a
wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by two
daughters and son-in-law, Dorothy Louise Vest of Marion, Judy and Otis
Feaganes of Staunton; a stepson, John Hetherington and wife, Donna, of
Lexington, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington of Roanoke,
Vicki Hetherington of Salem; two brothers, John C. Vest, Jr. of Pembroke,
Ross M. Vest of White Gate; five sisters, Wilma V. Blackburn of Cloverdale,
Mildred V. Stafford, Sadie V. White, and Mary V. Mustard of Pearisburg,
Josephine V. Melvin of Mechanicsburg; four grandchildren and spouses, James
(Jim) and Robin Feaganes, Michael and Lisa Feaganes, Terri and Steve Carter,
Patrick Feaganes. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the A.
Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate with the Rev. Richard Patterson,
the Rev. John Hamric, and the Rev. John Sullivan officiating. Burial in the
Stinson Cemetery, White Gate. Visiting will be Wednesday at the funeral home
after 4 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of

Douglas William Viar, age 81, of Dublin, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2003 in the Twin County Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, Nov. 28, 1921, son of the late Carven and Allie Crigger Viar. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette Rankin Viar. Mr. Viar was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, having served 22 years. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Viar; four sons, Randy Viar, Dublin, Danny Viar, Ivanhoe, David Viar, Dublin, Mike Viar, Christiansburg; two daughters, Theresa Morris, Pulaski, Crystal Viar, Dublin; five brothers, Carlie Viar, Pulaski, Hensel Viar, Ivanhoe, Tommy Viar, Draper, Harold Viar, Everette Viar both of Fries; one sister, Eleanor Scott, Pulaski; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at The Reese Funeral Chapel with Jack King officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. Grover King Post #1115, VFW will conduct graveside military rites. The family will receive friends at the Reese Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Christopher Vlahos, 89, of 4625 Old Stage Road (Newbern Heights), Pulaski died Saturday morning, June 21, 2003 in the New River Valley Medical Center, Radford. He was born on Feb. 22, 1914 in the village of Fidakia of Evrytania, Greece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Constantinos and Maria Vlahos, also of Fidakia, Greece and by a brother, Danny Vlahos and by three sisters, Paraskevi Gianakopoulos, Alexandra Skotidas and Angela Pistolis. Chris was a long standing entrepeneur in Pulaski with his brother Danny. They owned and operated Washington Cafe from 1946 until 1967 when it closed. Chris then operated Virginia Lunch until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Roanoke. Surviving are: his loving wife, Olga Vlahos, Pulaski; daughter, Mary Dalton and her husband, Gary and their son, Nickolas Andrew, Rockville, Va.; son, Dr. Gus Vlahos and his wife, Debbie and their children, Christopher Bernard and Stephanie Nicole, Dublin; sister, Georgia Kitcines, Athens, Greece; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Christ Episcopal Church, 144 N. Washington Avenue, Pulaski with Father Dean Nastos officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Monday evening from Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family wishes that donations be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, P. Theadore Voroyka, 71, of Dublin, died Friday morning, May 2, 2003, in Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born on May 22, 1931, in Price Hill, W.Va., and was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Malago Voroyka. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served for 21 years and was a retired postal employee. He was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church, Radford. Surviving are wife, Nancy S. Voroyka of Dublin; son and daughter-in-law, David W. and Sandra Voroyka of Pulaski; two granddaughters, Morgan Marshall and Sarah Marshall, both of Pulaski; two half-sisters, Delores Morton of Tucson, Ariz., and Dorothy Saul of Radford; two half-brothers, Edward Kamensky of Spotsylvannia, and David Kamensky of Beckley, W.Va. A funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the St. Judge's Catholic Church, Tyler Avenue, Radford, with Rev. Patrick Golden officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Dublin. Visiting will be Sunday evening from Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 4504 Starkey Road SW, Suite 115, Roanoke, Va. 24014. Mrs. Margaret F. Wagner, age 90, of 23381 Walden Road, died Sunday, September 15, 2002. Mrs. Wagner was born on August 20, 1912 in Washington County and was the widow of W. Maiden Wagner, Sr.

She is survived by her sons, William M. Wagner, Jr. and wife Marliene R. Wagner of Pulaski, VA and Jim K. Wagner and fiance Louise Bolduc of Yorktown, VA; her grandchildren, Nicole L. Wagner or Richmond, Jill W. Shirtz and husband Jason of Greenville, NC, Greg Wagner of Yorktown, VA; a great grandson, Tyler Shirtz of Greenville, NC; a sister, Virginia F. Shockley of Abingdon, VA; a brother, Lonzo Flannagan and wife Jane of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September18, 2002 at the graveside in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Betty Reiff officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2002 at the funeral home.

Jean R. Walko, 76, of Dublin, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Jan. 11, 1999, in a Radford hospital.

Surviving: husband, Paul Vincent Walko; daughters, Virginia Weaver of Arvada, Colo., Jean Simpkins of Dublin; brother, Raymond Holden of Wichita Falls, Texas; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.



Service will be 11 a.m. today at DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford, with the Rev. Richard Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

Edward Alden Wall, LTC Retired, 75, of Radford, died Saturday, July 19, 2003 in a Roanoke hospital. He was the other of Walls Jewelers. He was a mason and a member of the Kazim Temple Shrine Club. Mr. Wall attended Riverside Military Academy and the University of Denver, and had 28 years in military service. He is survived by his wife, Hilda H. Wall of Radford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy W. and Doug Jewell of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth W. and Howard Haynes of Richmond. He is also survived by his much loved grandson, Matthew Haynes; a special godson, Andy Pratt; and a special goddaughter, Wendi Simpkins. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2003 at Hollywood Cemetery, Elkin, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Radford or to the Kazim Temple Shrine Club in Roanoke. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford.
