William Austin "Bill" Steele, 63, of 159 Maple Street, Pulaski, died early Friday morning, May 16, 2003, at his home. He was born in Wythe County on Jan. 31, 1940 and was the son of the late George Steele and Mattie Stroupe Steele. He was a former employee of Pulaski Furniture and was retired from AT&T in Fairlawn. Surviving are wife, Katherine Steele, Pulaski; children and spouses, Curtis D. and Sandy R. Steele, Dublin; Stephen R. Steele of Pulaski, James A. and Tanya Steele of Pulaski, Sonya Steele of Pulaski; granchildren, Christie Steele, J.R. Steele, Jessica Steele, Billy Steele, Bradley Steele, and Katie Beth Steele; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David S. and Carol Reese of Pulaski. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Danny McGlothlin and Rev. Jim Alley officiating. Burial will follow in Hufford Cemetery, Pulaski County. Visiting will be Monday evening from the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. The family wishes that memorials be made to the Southern Gospel Radio (WBLB), PO Box 150, Pulaski, Va. 24301. Mrs. Mary Trolinger Steger 86, of 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, formerly of Pulaski, died Friday morning in a Richmond hospital.
Born in Pulaski, Jan. 31, 1897, she was the daughter of the late Henry Lewis Trofinger and Willie Jordan Trolinger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Watts Steger.
Surviving are one step-son, H. Watts Steger Jr., Pulaski; a brother, James T. Trolinger, Richmond, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. from the First United Methodist, Church with the Rev. J.N. Howard and Rev. Tom Seay officiating.
Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Visiting will be today at Stevens Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church or the charity of choice.

STEGER, Mary Sue Miles, 78, of 125 12th Street, N.W., Pulaski, died Tuesday afternoon, February 29, 2000 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski on March 8, 1921 and was the daughter of the late Arrest Miles and Nell Willis Miles. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Denny Steger, Sr. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Jerry Thomas of Pulaski; three sons and daughters-in-law, William D. Steger, Jr. and Karen Steger of Reidsville, N.C., Sidney Miles Steger of Pulaski, John Mason Steger and Robin Steger of Dublin; a sister, Lois Hurst, Roanoke; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel with Dr. Randy Frye officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. Visiting will be Thursday evening from the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 135 4th St., N.W., Pulaski, Va. 24301. Anne FitzSimons Stickley died on September 18, 2002 at the Kroontje Health Care Center in Blacksburg, Virginia after a 20-year battle with rheumatoid arthritis. She was born on June 1, 1928 in Charleston, South Carolina. She is preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Clara FitzSimons, her sister Clara Mather FitzSimons, and her brothers Theodore Barker FitzSimons and William Huger FitzSimons. She is survived by her ex-husband Dr. William Sproul Stickley, her sister Amy Grainger, her sons, Robert FitzSimons Stickley MD and Edward Lee Stickley, her daughter Regina Faith Stickley, her granddaughters, Anna Lorraine Harrison and Kimberly Stickley, her grandsons Robert Smallridge Stickley and Samuel FitzSimons Stickley and her great granddaughter Emma Lillian Harrison as well as nieces and nephews who were very special to her, especially Jennifer FitzSimons. She cherished her close friendship with Miwaka Haley.
Her career began as a RN, graduating from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. Anne enjoyed nursing and believed in the close and attentive care that she provided for her patients. She then completed further training at Bowman Gray School of Medicine to become a nurse anesthetist. She married Dr. William S. Stickley in 1956 subsequently lived overseas in Athens, Greece for two years, making several trips to the Greek islands and to Egypt. She spent the remainder of her life in the Winchester and Strasburg area with much of her time devoted to the renovation and maintenance of her home at Frye Fort. She continued to live in Coal Mine Hollow on Cedar Creek near Strasburg, Virginia, moving to Radford to live near her son.
To her family and friends, Anne is remembered as a woman with many talents. She mastered scuba diving and later went on to obtain her pilot's license. She was an excellent seamstress and made most of her own clothing. She enjoyed entertaining and preparing gourmet foods - everyone remembers the eclairs! She enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, planting and constructing stone walls at Frye Fort on Cedar Creek. Her strong personality always let those around her know exactly where they stood. She played mahjong regularly with friends until back pain prevented her from enjoying social activities. She was an avid reader. After taking a course in journalism at Shenandoah University, she had a short story accepted for publication in the Southern Crescent Review, an accomplishment of which she was quite proud.
There will be a gathering of her friends and relatives at the Hotel Strasburg in Strasburg, Virginia on Saturday, October 26, 2002 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM to share memories and photos. In lieu of flowers, any one wishing to make a donation in her name should send it to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309. She will be remembered with love and respect.

Jack Thomas Stilwell, 74, of 1094 Stilwell Road, Draper, passed away Friday, June 6, 2003 at the Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. Born Oct. 18, 1928 in Pulaski county, Virginia, he was the son of the late Joseph Austin Stilwell and Lima Edith Manning Stilwell. His sister, Bertie Opal Stilwell, also preceded him in death. He was retired from the Pulaski County Public Service Authority with 15 years of experience. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jennie Lou Gravely Stilwell; sons, Jackie Lee Stilwell, Lucas Temple Stilwell, and Thomas Stillwell, all of Draper; five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren; and one sister, Geneva Phibbs of Shady Springs, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with Rev. Dale Akers and Rev. Earnest Chinault officiating. Interment will follow at the Memorial Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, is handling arrangements for the family.

Ruth King Stone, 85 of Radford, passed away Monday, May 5, 2003 at the New River Valley Medical Center. She was a member of the Fairlawn United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Stone. Survivors include a son, R. Thomas Stone, Jr. of Birmingham, AL; a daughter, Anita Marie Francis of Fletcher, NC; two sisters, Barbara Blount of Woodstock, and Pearl Kehoe of Plantation, FL; three brothers, Elbert King of Madison, NJ, and Clyde King and Cline King, both of Roanoke; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 9, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Fairlawn United Methodist Church. Arrangements are being handled by Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

Leonard STOOTS, 86 died Monday morning at the home of a daughter in Austinville.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. R. L. FROST, Pulaski; Mrs. Arthur HILL, Roanoke; Mrs. R. P. COOK, Mrs. Henry AUSTIN, both of Austinville; four brothers, 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday from Sheeptown Church of God, conducted by the Rev. J. T. Barnes and the Rev. Wayne Briggs. Burial will be in Westend Cemetery in Wytheville.



The body will be at Barnett Funeral Home until 10 a. m. Wednesday.

Harry Elmo Strupe, 94 of Radford, died Monday night, April 21, 2003 at the New River Valley Medical Center. Born in Bluefield, WV, he was the son of the late John B. and Ollie Hylton Strupe. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ada Warner Strupe, his second wife, Virginia Carbaugh Strupe, and a sister, Inez Strupe Nelson. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia "Sibby" and Doug McPeake of Radford, and Rebecca "Becky" and Dean Widener of Richlands; five grandsons and their families, Gregory Widener and his wife, Tammy, and their children, Brandon and Amanda, all of Wise, Timothy McPeake and his wife, Janet, and their children, Lauren and Erin, all of Dublin, Bruce Widener, and his wife, Joie, and their children, Justin and Kayla, all of Smith Mountain. Lake, Jeffrey McPeake and his wife, Tammy, and his son, Zachary, all of Radford, and Paul Widener of Abingdon; three stepchildren and their spouses, Howard and Joyce Sarver of Texas, Curtis and Shirley Sarver of Newport, and Bea Hypes of Blacksburg. Also surviving are long-time faithful friends Sherman, Sam and Sid Smith of Blacksburg. Mr. Strupe was a member of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church. He graciously donated his body to science. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Terry Woodard officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Dept., 7358 Pepper Ferry Blvd., Radford, VA 24141. Mullins Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

SUMNER, Odetta Bishop, 88, of Pulaski, died early Friday morning, November 30, 2001, in the Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley. She was born in Floyd County on February 27, 1913, and was the daughter of the late Asa Bishop and Dessie Shelor Bishop. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edgar F. Sumner, Sr. She was a member of the Aldersgate United Church, Pulaski. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Edgar F. Sumner, Jr., and Vickie Sumner of Rocky Mount; two brothers, Okie Bishop and Edsel Bishop, both of Christiansburg; grandchildren and spouse, Christy and Wes Blair of Draper, Nathan Hartwell and Robert Hartwell, both of Roanoke. Funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Dublin. SUTHERLAND, Mary Margaret Crabtree, 80, of Wytheville, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2000 in Wythe County Community Hospital. Mrs. Sutherland grew up as a child of missionaries in Brazil and came to Wythe County after graduating from the University of Richmond in 1940. She was a retired school teacher from the Wythe County School System after teaching for over 40 years. She was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church, the Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Association, and the Christian Women's Club. She is preceded in death by her parents, Asa Routh Crabtree and Mabel Henderson Crabtree, and her sister, Lydia Crabtree Love. She is survived by her husband, Raymond D. Sutherland of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Christine Sutherland, Jr. of Wilton, Conn.; one brother and sister-in-law, George William and Marilyn Crabtree of Adelphia, Md.; three grandchildren, Kathryn Layne Sutherland, Elaine Margaret Sutherland, Mary James Sutherland, all of New York City, New York; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews also survive. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Wytheville Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Barry Losey. The family will receive friends at the Wytheville Baptist Church at 10 a.m. until service time. The interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wytheville Baptist Church Building Fund. The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

James William Sutphin, 85, of Windsong Road, Allisonia, Va. died Sunday, June 29, 2003, in the Twin County Community Hospital, Galax, Va. He was born in Virginia on June 1, 1918, and was the son of the late Frank Sutphin and Nola Phillips Sutphin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Alexander Sutphin, and by a brother, Charles Sutphin, by a sister, Sadie Fudget, and by a son-in-law, Bobby Morris. He was a retired employee of Coleman Furniture Corp. in Pulaski with 30 years of service. Surviving are: his daughter, Karen Morris, Allisonia; brother, George Sutphin, Salem; granddaughter and spouse, Sharon and Douglas Freeman, Hillsville; grandson, Robert James Morris, Jr., Dublin; four great-grandsons, Robert D. Freeman, Brandon P. Freeman, Dustin A. Freeman, Nicholas D. Freeman, all of Hillsville; two great-granddaughters, Haley R. Morris, Taylor P. Morris, both of Dublin; special friend, Erbie Moore, Hillsville; several nieces and nephews, Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Marshall Cemetery, Carroll County. She was born in Lurich, Virginia on October 31, 1909 and was the daughter of the late Henry Judson Ferguson and Elizabeth Jane Ferguson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ed Early Sutphin, two brothers, Lewis Hobert Ferguson, Mark Edward Ferguson, five sisters, Elizabeth Grace Ferguson Cecil, Mona Quay Ferguson Swaim, Sadie Maude Ferguson Spangler, Roma Jeanette Ferguson Maupin and Ruthie Nell Ferguson. She was a life long resident of Pulaski and was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Pulaski and she was a retired employee of Virginia Maid Hosiery Mill. Surviving are her sister Catherine Marie Ferguson Wolfe, Pulaski; two daughters and spouses, Iris Dawn Sutphin Wall and William Bidgood Wall, of Farmville, Jeane Marie Sutphin Yates and William Charles Yates, of Pulaski; grandchildren and spouses, William Bidgood "Bid" Wall, Steven Edward Wall and Kathy Wall, Sarah Lucille Yates McGee and Michael McGee, William Charles "Chuck" Yates, II and Shannon Yates, Iris Marie Yates Bevins and Ron Bevins; great-grandchildren, Amanda Jeane McGee, Leila Caroline Wall, Zachary Tyler Yates, Mary Emeline Wall, Jacob Daniel McGee, Kasey Lee Bevins, Elizabeth Peyton Langhorne Wall and William Bidgood "Guy" Wall, III.
