SNUFFER, Lucille Page, 69, of Parrott, died Tuesday, October 9, 2001 in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Darcas Gonzales and Virginia Birchfield. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Kitty Page and George and Pat Page, Parrott and Robert and Melanie Page, Jonesborough, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Florence and John Whittaker and Virginia and Ray Wilburn, both of Parrott; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara Abriel, Detroit, Michigan, Mary and Junior Lee, Grundy, and Annie and Sewell Mackins, Chicago, Ill.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Buddy Boswell, Detroit, Michigan, Lige Boswell, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Tommy and Marie Hall, Chicago, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her very special dog "Runt" also survive. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2001 at the Parrott Church of God with Rev. Eddie Dalton officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2001 at the Parrott Church of God. DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford, is handling arrangements.

Evelyn Minnick Sorrell, 90, of Crozet, Va., and formerly of Pulaski, died Sunday June 22, 2003, at her Crozet residence. Born October 20, 1912 in Rockingham County, Va., she was the daughter of the late George L. and Sallie Tussing Minnick. She was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pulaski. As a former resident of Pulaski for over fifty years, Mrs. Sorrell devoted her life to caring for her family and later to the children of other families in the area. She led an exemplary life and all who knew her were blessed by her generous and loving nature. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Eugene Glasgow Sorrell, who was a mechanic in Pulaski County for the Virginia Department of Transportation. She was also preceded in death by three sisters; Mary Miller, Ruth Fox, and Gertrude Sowers, and three brothers; Paul R. Minnick, Ralph Minnick, and Carl Minnick. She is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Sorrell Hall of Crozet, Va.; two sons, Eugene G. Sorrell, Jr. of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Paul M. Sorrell of Chesterfield, Va.; three sisters, Margaret M. Lawson of Jacksonville, Fla., Catherine M. Weeks of Floyd, and Anna M. Sowers of Front Royal, Va.; a brother, Miley Minnick of Ennis, Texas; as well as six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Sorrell was cremated and her graveside memorial service will be held Tuesday July 22, 2003 at 12 noon in Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski, Va. The family will receive friends on Tuesday July 22, 2003 from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home in Pulaski. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Hospice of the Piedmont 1490 Pantops Mountain Place Charlottesville, Va. 22911. A retired merchant and realtor for many years, Mrs. Valeria Grantham SOUTHERN, 94, of 37 8th St., N.W. died Monday afternoon in Pulaski General Hospital.
Born in Pulaski County Sept. 26, 1878, she was the daughter of the late James William GRANTHAM and Lucinda WASSUM GRANTHAM and she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Allen SOUTHERN. Mrs. SOUTHERN was a merchant in Pulaski for about 20 years and operated a Ladies ready-to-wear and Millinery Shop and after retiring she entered the realestate business. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Pulaski Woman's Club and the Pulaski Garden Club. Surviving are one son, Turus F. SOUTHERN and one daughter, Mrs. Leta G. GILMER, both of, Pulaski. Also, two granddaughters and six great grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with Dr. Robert H. Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Clara Lillian Spangler, 83, of Pulaski died Saturday morning May 31, 2003 at Pulaski Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 15, 1920 in Pulaski, she was the daughter of the late Flora Epperly Spangler and Peter Willis Spangler. She was a retired inspector at Jefferson Mills with 36 years of service. She is survived by a sister Lenora “Nonie” Russell of Norfolk, Va., and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m.. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with Bruce Shaw and Stephen Jayne officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Visiting will be Monday from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. SPENCE, Roy Elder, 82, of Floyd, left this world peacefully to be with the
Lord, his creator, on Saturday, January 6, 2001. He died at the Brian
Center, Fincastle, Va., in the presence of his wife and family. Born
November 23, 1918, he was a member of Laurel Hill Church of Christ, Radford,
Va. He was retired from the Hercules Company of Radford after 32 years
service. He enjoyed handcrafting violins, mandolins and banjos and
encouraged everyone to learn to play the instruments. He gave each child and
grandchild and several special family members an instrument. He was a loving
husband of 58 years to his surviving wife, Hasaba Criner Spence. Also
surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Beatrice and Ken Thompson,
Troutville; son, Wayne Spence, Christiansburg; brother, Fray Spence, Willis;
sisters, Loma Martin, Willis, Flora Pugh, Roanoke, Dot Spence, Havre de
Grace, Md.; grandchildren and spouses, Cheryl and Jeff Lunsford, Troutville,
Lisa and David Bess, Roanoke, Ricky and Mendy Spence, Floyd, Donnie Spence,
Stuart; great-grandchildren, Erin and Ryan Lunsford, Brandon Spencer, Brooke
Bess, Jared and Abigail Spence, Spencer Bess, who was named in honor of his
great-grandfather. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Maberry
Funeral Home Chapel, with C. E. Mannon and the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating.
Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Maberry Funeral Home.

SPIERS, John Benjamin Jr., 74, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 7, 2000. He was surrounded by his wife and children at the time of his death. Mr. Spiers, known to family and friends as "Bunny", was born on December 12, 1925, in Radford, Virginia, where he spent his life. He was a local attorney, civic leader, devoted husband and father, and devout member of Grace Episcopal Church in Radford, Virginia. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, having logged more than 400,000 miles of travel on his BMW motorcycles, both with friends and with his wife. Mr. Spiers attended Hampden-Sydney College, and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia College of Law in 1949, where he also was awarded the Order of the Coif. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. During that time, he graduated from the Naval School of Justice, served as legal officer for the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, and taught courses on the Uniform Code of Military Justice to non-lawyers in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Mr. Spiers has practiced law in Radford for more than 50 years. He practiced first with his father as Spiers & Spiers. In 1961, Mr. Spiers was appointed Municipal Judge and Domestic Relations Judge for the City of Radford. He described the most important aspect of his judicial position to be that of dealing with juveniles, given the power of the court to alter one's life. He then practiced law with the Honorable Duane E. Mink in the firm of Spiers, Spiers & Mink. During the past four years, he has practiced local government law with the firm of Sands, Anderson, Marks & Miller. He was a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. In 1966, Mr. Spiers was named City Attorney by the Radford City Council. He served as City Attorney and attorney for the Radford City School Board through 1999. He continued to serve the City the remainder of his life. Mr. Spiers is survived by his wife, Josephine Hurley Spiers, one son, three daughters, and three grandchildren: John B. Spiers, Jr., Valerie Paul, and Lindsey Josephine Spiers of Guam, Sherry Spiers, Philip Spratt and Alexander Spratt of Tallahassee, Florida, Vikki Spiers Catellacci, Gianni Catellacci, and Alima Catellacci of Panuilo, Hawaii, and Joanne Spiers Moche and Spero Moche, Jr. of Floyd, Virginia. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 11, at 11 a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Claude McCauley and Bishop Frank Vest (retired) officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Grace Episcopal Church, Harvey & Fourth Streets, Radford, Va. 24141. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mrs. Sarah Bryant STAFFORD, age 71, died Wednesday night in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Roy Edward STAFFORD; one son Charles D, STAFFORD, Pulaski; two daughters, Mrs. William T. SHOMAKER, Pulaski; and Miss Crystal M. STAFFORD, Woodbridge, Virginia; two sisters, Mrs. Charles P. BRAWLEY, Pulaski; and Mrs. Thomas K. PRICE, High Point, North Carolina; four grandchildren. STAFFORD, Clyde Jr., 70, of the Little Creek Community, Dublin, went to be
with the Lord Sunday, January 16, 2000 from his home. He was born March 2,
1929 at Trigg, Va., the son of the late Leslie Clyde Stafford, Sr. and
Lillie Kate Riddle Stafford. He was a member of French's Chapel Pentecostal
Holiness Church for 53 years and had been their song leader and was a
retired employee of the Celanese Fibers Corp. with 42 years service. He is
survived by his wife, Lena Combs Stafford; two sons and daughter-in-law,
Bill Stafford of Dublin, David and Sheila Stafford of Pearisburg; three
daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Daniel Atkins of Cleveland, Ohio, Reba
and Charles Harrell of Dublin, Betty and Rayburn Woodyard of High Point,
N.C.; three brothers, Robert Stafford and Earnest Stafford, both of Trigg,
Basil Stafford of Fairfax; four sisters, Hazel Higginbotham of Blacksburg,
Mary Ann Stafford and Freida VanKeuren, both of Pearisburg, Janice Robertson
of Greensboro, N.C.; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two
stepgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will
be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White
Gate with the Rev. Billy Akers officiating. Burial in Highland Memory
Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Tuesday after 1 p.m. at the funeral home
and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral service for Delano K. STALVEY, 58, retired farmer in the Socastee section of Horry Co., S.C., who died Thursday, was held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Socastee Methodist church. The pastor, the Rev. Robert Page officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was the father of Charles R STALVEY, Staff Village, Dublin.

STANKE, Frances Shrader, 77, of 2708 Clover Hollow Road in Newport, went
home to be with her Lord on Monday, March 26, 2001 from Montgomery Regional
Hospital in Blacksburg. Born in Giles County on April 24, 1923, she was a
daughter of the late Rufus and Laticia Mullins Blankenship. She was a member
of the First Christian Church of Newport and was preceded in death by her
husbands, William F. Shrader and L.W. Bill Stanke. Surviving are three sons,
Eugene Franklin Shrader of Pembroke, James Richard Shrader of Norristown,
Pa. and Darrell Wayne Shrader of Christiansburg; four daughters, Geraldine
Vanhoozier of Christiansburg, Bonnie Beasley of Newport, Carolyn Williams of
Newport, and Beverly Williams of Pembroke; one sister, Lula B. Fleeman of
Narrows; fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a special
nephew, Stanley Blankenship of Narrows. Funeral services will be conducted
11a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001 in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow
Street in Pembroke with Pastor Roger Henderson officiating. Burial will
follow in the Shrader Cemetery in Clover Hollow at Newport. The family will
receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In
lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the
Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad.

STANTON, Howard Burton Jr., 72, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a First Liutenant. Mr. Stanton practiced dentistry in Christiansburg for 38 years, also serving as team dentist for the Virginia Tech Football Team for 20 years. He volunteered with various civic organizations including the C.H.S. Demon Booster, was a past director of the Bank of Christiansburg and past Chairman of the Board of Montgomery County Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Velma Jo Clingenpeel Stanton; a daughter, Emily Woodbury Stanton, Pilot; a son, Howard Burton Stanton, III, Herndon; a brother and sister-in-law, David Robert and Valerie Stanton, Jr., Diane and Dan Tolley and their children, Patrick Clingenpeel; brother-in-law, Glenn Lloyd and Judy Richardson Clingenpeel, Richard Bowman Clingenpeel; his father-in-law, Lloyd M. Clingenpeel. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Unity Church of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Green Ridge Rd., Roanoke, VA conducted by the Rev. Diane Scribner-Clevenger. Robley Reaumur (Chick) Stearnes, of Salem, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. He was born August 27, 1913, in Dublin, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. James Daniel Stearnes and Bessie Hardwicke Thompson Stearnes of Dublin, Va. and his wife of 55 years, Katherine Vinson Stearnes and all siblings. He was the grandson of the late Captain Alonzo Cecil Hardwicke and Susan Wilson Hardwicke of Montgomery County, Va. and Dr. John Lewis Stearnes and Phoebe McDermed Stearnes of Dublin and Salem, Va. He retired in 1978 from the Virginia Department of Transportation with over 40 years of service. He was also a retired U.S. Army Sergeant 1ST Class, World War II veteran having served in Panama-China-Burma-India Theater, U.S.A. and 80TH Division Training Reserve, Salem, member of the American Legion, Salem, Va. He was a life member of NACCCA and NARCE. In addition, he was a 32ND Scottish Rite Mason and Past Master of Taylor Lodge #23, A.F.&A.M., and received his 50-year pin last year. He was a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America and was certified an Eagle Scout November 28, 1929. He was a charter member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church and an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Salem since May 24, 1953. He loved the game of baseball and supported the farm clubs in Salem since 1950, and was able to attend the opening game for the 2003 Salem Avalanche season. Surviving are his daughter, Linda Stearnes Chambers of Salem; nephews, Albert Friedel, Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio, Walter Wyrick, Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; a niece, Fary Wyrick Anderson of Kent, Ohio; also special cousins, Janie Hardwicke of Dublin, Va. and Bill Senter of Salem, Va.; and a lifelong friend, Sydney Davie of Dublin, Va. Funeral was held Friday, April 25, 2003, 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Pickle officiating. Masonic graveside services were given by Taylor Lodge #23 A.F.&A.M. with interment in Sherwood Burial Park. The family received friends at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003. Memorials may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad, Box 291, Salem, Va. 24153 or the charity of your choice.
