This is a big defoliate tree that can grow to be 10-20 meters high. The canopy is like an umbrella, and the bark is smooth. It blooms in May and June, with bunches of bright yellow flowers hanging on the branches, each bunch between 30-60 centimeters. The dark-brown pods contain seeds that are sweet and edible.

It likes to suck nectar from the flowers of shiny bugleweed herb or other compositae plants. Its forelegs have been reduced, and often overlooked. Its larva feeds on dregea formosana yamazaki of family asclepiadaceae.

This insect has a red, round head and a black body. There is long, gray hair at the tips of its elytrons. The body length is 2-4 centimeters. The elytrons are very thin. This insect does not fly far or fast, and is commonly seen in low- and medium-altitude mountains. It feeds mainly on herb. It is a poisonous insect, and can be used as a material of herbal medicine.
