Brief Introduction:

Brief Introduction:

This is a perennial herb, with short, big roots. The stalk is 30-80 centimeters, with a ring-shaped leaf scar. The pistillate flower is below, the staminate flower is on the top, and in between is a neutral flower. The whole plant is poisonous, with the root containing the stronger poison. When eaten, it can cause a burning pain in the mouth, throat, and stomach, sometimes even an itching throat and cardiac arrhythmia. When the juice touches the eye, it can cause a severe pain. The plant can be grown for watching, but be careful not to eat it or touch the juice. However, when mashed, the root can be applied to help soothe swellings.

Brief Introduction:

This is a very beautiful bird, with significant differences between the colors of the male and those of the female. There are red wattles at the eyes of the male, and a ring around the neck, but it is broken in the front. The long tail feathers are magnificent, but they are not conspicuous on 1-2-year-old males. The female is brown, not very conspicuous. It lives in bushes near cultivated fields on plains or low-altitude areas. It is now rarely seen in Taiwan, an endangered species under second-grade protection.

It is often seen on farms, with a soft twittering sound.

Brief Introduction:

This bird lives in shrubs or bushes near swamps, rice fields, and wetlands. It is about 30 centimeters in length, and is called “White Face” in Taiwanese, mainly because of its white face. Its back is black and grey. It is a timid bird, and often looks for food near water at twilight, alone or in pairs. It often builds its nest by piling up weed or leaves. Its voice sounds like “ku-a, ku-a,” and is therefore called “ku-chicken” in the country.

Brief Introduction:

This is a common butterfly on plains and mountains all over the Island. The morphological appearances of the male and the female are the same, with wings of 6.5-7 centimeters when spread and the forewings about 36-48 millimeters in length. The spots and colors of both the male and the female are very similar, with longitudinal spots lined in the center of the forewings and hindwings, and little blue spots on the outer edges. The larva feeds on leaves of some plants. The adults can be seen all year round, and most often between March and May. It flies fast, and likes to visit flowers and flock at streams to drink.

This butterfly lives in areas of plains and medium-altitude mountains. It has two pairs of large and thin wings that are lined with scaly spots, and the wings are 7.5-9.5 centimeters when spread. It likes to suck nectar from the flowers of shiny bugleweed herb or other compositae plants. Its forelegs have been reduced, and often overlooked. Its larva feeds on dregea formosana yamazaki of family asclepiadaceae.

It is nicknamed “Green Whistle” because of its color and voice. It lives in groups, except in breeding season. It feeds on nectar, berries, and insects. It builds its bowl-shaped nest on branches with grass, and often covers the outside with spider-web and moss. It is a very delicate nest.

Brief Introduction to Topography of Town: The town borders on Shoufeng Township and Fengpin Township at Hualien River and part of East Coast Mountains on the east, Kuangfu Township at Ma-tai-an River on the south, and Wanrong Township at the eastern slope of the Central Mountains on the west, including part of the mountain areas of the Central Mountains. In the administrative district of the town, there are rivers like Shoufeng River, Wanlichau River, Ma-tai-an River, Fenglin River, and Liuchiepi River, carrying sand and rocks from the mountains on both sides to form the alluvium in Hua Tung Valley. Therefore, the town area consists mainly of the flat alluvial plain, with the western hills of the East Coast Mountains on the east, and the eastern part of the Central Mountains on the west.

Brief Introduction to Geology of Town: Because most of the town is located in the valley area, the geological structure of the flat plain area is the alluvial layer of Holocene gravel, sand, and clay. The eastern part includes the volcanic flow, volcanic conglomerate, and volcanic debris of Miocene Du-luan Mountain stratum, as well as the early pleistocene Fan-shu-liao stratum of the interbedding of mud stone and sand stone, and the sand-shade interbedding of Ba-li-wan stratum which was formed between the early Pleistocene period and the early Pleistocene period. The western mountain part are the Yuli stratum composed of mica-schist, phyllite, and green-schist of the late Palaezoic era and Mesozoic era.

Brief Introduction: The Hakka people are good at planting rice and making delicious rice foods. Chipa is always a “must” in all kinds of Hakka occasions, such as wedding, funerals, birthdays, and religious rituals. The making of Chipa is also a happy get-together for the Hakka people. Glutinous rice is ground and steamed, and then stirred or pounded in a mortar until it becomes a sticky mass. The process is called “Beating Chipa.” People usually use chopsticks to “cut” a small piece from the mass and dip it in a mixture of sugar, sesame, and peanut powder, and eat it.
