Name of Production: Agriculture
Name of Town: Fenglin Town
Name of County: Hualien County
Category of Production: Agriculture
Brief Introduction:
Because of the Central Mountains on the west and the East Coast Mountains on the east, the shape of the town of Fenglin is long, narrow, and flat. The Ma-tai-an River crosses the southern tip, and the Shoufeng River crosses the north, while the Hualien River runs by the town for about 14 kilometers from south to north. The average temperature of the year is between 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Rain falls mostly in the summer, and it is quite dry in the winter. The total area of cultivated land is 6,040 hectares. The farmers of the town plan their productions according to the natural environment, irrigation system, and land utilization to enhance the use of resources and increase the productions. Business and industry are not prosperous in town, but agriculture has been well-developed because of the fine environment and the diligence of the farmers. With advanced agricultural techniques, the farmers have been able to produce and sell rice, fruits, and other grains on a considerable scale. To cope with the impact of free trade of agricultural products, the town has made a plan of organizing “nucleus” farmers to form cooperative teams and carefully plan the productions of the crops, so as to enhance the standard of living of the farmers and the economical prosperity of agriculture. The total area of the administrative district of Fenglin is 120.5181 square kilometers, with 40% of plain, 30% of river, and 30% of mountains and hills. The statistics of the two seasons of 2001 were:
Total Area of Cultivated Land: 6,446 hectares.
Total Area of Rice Fields: 982 hectares.
Total Area of Other Fields: 5,464 hectares.
Total Area of Resting Fields: 1,053 hectares
Actually planted area of rice: 154 hectares; vegetables: 254 hectares; fruits: 1,065 hectares. On the Taisugar farms of Chungyuan, Lintien, and Wanli, sugarcane was planted. Now a forestation project is being carried on.

Brief Introduction:
The richest spruce areas in Fenglin are in Pinglin and Lintienshan in the Central Mountains. According to Mr. Tsai Ching-yun, a centenarian born in 1901, who had worked as an accountant at a Japanese lumbering company in Pinglin, the Japanese started massive lumbering of spruce in 1918, and transported the logs with small trains. When the spruce trees were exhausted in Pinglin, they moved to Lintienshan and continued the lumbering. The lumbering site at Pinglin cannot be seen today. The old gentleman said that the Japanese cared only about lumbering, not reforestation. The results were bared mountains and mud floods. This was absolutely despicable.
The lumbering in Lintienshan started in 1939, and the primitive spruce trees were massively lumbered. Later, the Republic of China government took over and continued with the lumbering. In the 1980s, seeing that the trees were about to be exhausted, and reforestation was not successful, the government finally decided to terminate the lumbering operation in 1988. A plan to protect and preserve the forestry resources into a recreation area was made and carried out.
In 1996, great damages were done by a big typhoon, and the government decided to make large-scale reforestation a policy of keeping the land safe. The town of Fenglin promoted a project of “Forestation by Everybody” on an area of 545 hectares. The purpose was to maintain a balance between economic development and ecological preservation, in order to make Taiwan an everlasting “Green Silicon Island.” Later, to adjust the use of farmland in order to cope with the results of joining the WTO (World Trade Organization), the Agriculture Council of Executive Yuan made a policy of forestation on flat land to increase the area of green land on plains. Fenglin succeeded in forestating 35 hectares.

Lintienshan (林田山)
Name of Scenic Spot: Lintienshan Forestry Culture Park
Name of Town: Fenglin
Name of County: Hualien County
Category of Scenic Spot: Historic Habitation
Brief Introduction:
The site of Lintienshan Forestry used to be a lumbering base, and was once called “The Home of Spruce in Taiwan.” In the period of Japanese Occupation, it was named “Morisaka,” meaning “thriving trees.” Since the period of Japanese Occupation until 1990, the Lintienshan forestry in WanRong Township, with its famous natural spruce forest, was a major forestry in the eastern part of Taiwan. But now, lumbering in this area has declined to the point where the base is virtually deserted. However, because the houses were built of high-quality spruce, the village has survived the years, and the original aura is still preserved. Therefore, Lintienshan has been nicknamed “The Jeofeng of Hualien” (Jeofeng is a very famous old village in Taipei County). The natural scenery at Lintienshan is very beautiful. The Japanese-styled spruce houses and the lumbering gear are preserved for people and students to see. In 1972, the largest forest fire in the history of Taiwan happened here, and lasted for a whole month. The decline of Lintienshan was doomed. Luckily, the original features of the community have been preserved. Natural and cultural views in this area are still very rich. Touring this simple little village, seeing the relics of the prosperity of the 1950s, and thinking of the changes in history and culture can rouse a feeling of peace and tranquility.
