Brief Introduction: All the fishing boats in Hualien Harbor operate on the nearby sea. The fishermen go out to sea very early in the morning, and return around noon to unload their catch at the Fishermen’s Association Dock. In the afternoon, all kinds of fresh fish are displayed for sale at the stalls of the market near Dock.

Shou Tien Temple (壽天宮)

In 1948, Fenglin local squires Peng Chin-shao, Shih Ching-shui, Shih Jui-yang, and others raised a fund to renovate a warehouse into a temple to worship Kuan-kung, and named it Shou Tien Temple. In 1964, many worshipers felt that the structure of the temple was too simple and also rundown, and motioned to have the temple rebuilt. On September 1, 1966, the opening ceremony of the new temple was held, and the temple has stood since. There are a lot of worshipers, and it is one of the biggest temples in town. According to Mr. Peng Chin-shao, there was only one Town God temple in Fenglin in the period of Japanese Occupation, and it was destroyed because of the Japanese Naturalization Movement, and the idol of the Town God was burned at the place in front of the site of today’s Fenglin Land God Shrine. After Shou Tien Temple was built, the Town God began to be worshiped again, although as a “deputy” god in the left hall of the temple. However, the historical significance is very important. In the right hall, Yi-min-ye, the greatest Hakka god, is worshiped. Fenglin has the largest Hakka population in Hualien County, and the worshiping of Yi-min-ye shows the local significance of this guardian god to the Hakka settlers.

Brief Introduction: The secret of the marvelous taste of Tseng’s “Maji” (Glutinous Rice Cakes) is in the soft, flexible, purely handmade skin and the sweet but never-too-rich stuffing. Glutinous rice is ground with water into juice, and press-dried into “dough.” It then goes through a process of beating, rubbing, patting, and slamming, so that the flexibility of glutinous rice is “activated.” Under the motto of “No Anticorrosives,” the producers have developed a method of keeping the cakes fresh from one day to two days. The main varieties are traditional millet muaji, purple muaji, ice-cream muaji, and seasonal fruit muaji.
