Shortly after the Restoration of Taiwan, malaria struck Guava (Fuyuan) Village. By chance, Dr. Shih came to the village and found that medical care was needed, so he stayed and set up Hsinglin Clinic. On July 25, 1971, a train fell off the rail bridge and caused great casualties. Dr. Shih took care of many injured people. Years later, many of them still come to thank him.

This is a common tree in Taiwan, mostly planted for watching. It has a graceful shape, and because there are many branches and twigs which result in overlapping crowns, the tree has an amazing use of blocking noises. It is also tolerant of air pollution, and therefore is commonly planted in areas of heavy traffic. It has a special fragrance, and can be made into moth balls or camphor to drive away insects, strengthen the heart, and reduce body temperature. The bark is brown with deep cleavages. The alternate leaf is coriaceous, undulate, oval, about 7-10 centimeters long and 3-5 centimeters wide, with a deep green surface and a white back. The flower is small, yellow with green, with panicle inflorescence. The global drupe is deep purple when ripe.

The oval drupe is about three millimeters in diameter, and black when ripe. It commonly grows on plains and low-altitude areas. The fibers of the tensile bark can be used to make ropes or in textile. This is a perennial herb, about 1-3 meters tall. The leaf is 60-70 centimeters long, 10-15 centimeters wide, with hair on the edges, and long sheath The cone inflorescene bends, about 20-30 centimeters long. The flower is funnel-formed, and the calyx is tube-shaped. The petals of the corolla are large and yellowish, with red spots and stripes. There are three stamens, but two of them have become petal-shaped, and only one is productive . There is one pistil, and the stigma rises from the anther of the stamen. The fruit is global, with multiple strigation. The multiple seeds are dark blue or dark grey, with white membranous aril.
This plant has played and important role in the traditional life. In the earlier years, farmers used the leaf sheath to weave into mattresses or ropes. The leaves are still used for wrapping rice dumplings, and the seeds are made into throat lozenge. It blooms in the season of Dragon Boat Festival. When you see the flower, you should get closer to see the beauty of the tiny “tongue” sticking out of the corolla. The flower fades easily, so it is not suitable for flower arranging.

This is a common species of butterfly that lives in low-altitude areas, and can be seen in Japan and Southeast Asia. The larva feeds on citric leaves of family rutaceae. There are two types of the female, one with a tail-tip on the hindwing, and one without, both with white spots. The male’s hindwings are bright blue, without white spots, very different from the female. This is also its distinguishing characteristic from popilo protenor. It can be seen in all seasons. This is an insect covered with a hard layer of leather. The male has an acicular spike on the chest, while the female does not. Therefore it is easy to tell the sexes. It is brown or dark brown. There is a conspicuous acicula on the male’s head. The Japanese people worship this insect, and make warrior’s helmet in the shape of this insect. It is regarded as “the king of insects” with good reasons. It is huge and strong, so it has very few rivals.
This insect lives in many areas in Taiwan, from the plains in Changhwa to the 2,000-meter mountains of Nantou. Most of the people who grow up in mountains or the country have memories of childhood with this insect. The female does not have the acicula, so it looks like a huge tumblebug. In fact, they are both from the same family scarabaeidae. The larva lives in humus and feeds on dead leaves or rotten wood. The adult lives on juice of trees or ripe fruits.

The larva feeds on lepidagathis formosensis clark and baphica canthus cusia of family acanthaceae. The adult appears between March and October, often in shady and wet woods, mimicking a dried leaf to avoid enemies. It likes to suck the fermented fruit juice or tree juice. It is a large butterfly, with wings 8-10.5 centimeters wide when spread. The surface of the wing is brown, with a blue line on the base. There is an orange band in the center of the forewing. The opposite is earth-brown, with a dark vein like the venation of a dried leaf. The female is slightly bigger, with a lighter shade of color and a more conspicuous tip on the hindwing.
