Mr. Chang was an accomplished painter. His works were selected to join national exhibitions in the period of Japanese Occupation.

Mr. Chang was one of the most distinguished students of Mr. Hwang Jui-tu, a famous local scholar. It is a pity that most of his poetic works were lost in the movings of residences. Now, only a few of his paintings are carefully preserved. In the period of Japanese Occupation, his painting had been selected to join national exhibitions. This shows his accomplishment in painting.

Yunlo Restaurant was founded more than 60 years ago. Mr. Chang is the third-generation owner, and still preserves the restaurant certificate issued by the Japanese government, a valuable document. The specialty of the restaurant is the “Combination Noodles,” plus widely welcomed fried noodles, dumplings, and lunch boxes.

Shortly after the Restoration of Taiwan, malaria struck Guava (Fuyuan) Village. By chance, Dr. Shih came to the village and found that medical care was needed, so he stayed and set up Hsinglin Clinic. On July 25, 1971, a train fell off the rail bridge and caused great casualties. Dr. Shih took care of many injured people. Years later, many of them still come to thank him.

Mr. Chen is a Hakka from Nanjuang, Miaoli. He came to Guava (Fuyuan) Village in 1921, and opened a grocery store at the corner of Fuyuan Elementary School and the Town God Temple. This was the most prosperous business district of the village at the time, and the shop became the first grocery store of the village.

The first rice shucking mill in the village was set up in Lan-a-san Tribal Village, run by a Japanese settler. It was sold to Mr. Lin, a lumber businessman from Hualien City, in 1951. After Mr. Lin died, the business was passed on to his son, Lin Hui-ken.

This is a common tree in Taiwan, mostly planted for watching. It has a graceful shape, and because there are many branches and twigs which result in overlapping crowns, the tree has an amazing use of blocking noises. It is also tolerant of air pollution, and therefore is commonly planted in areas of heavy traffic. It has a special fragrance, and can be made into moth balls or camphor to drive away insects, strengthen the heart, and reduce body temperature. The bark is brown with deep cleavages. The alternate leaf is coriaceous, undulate, oval, about 7-10 centimeters long and 3-5 centimeters wide, with a deep green surface and a white back. The flower is small, yellow with green, with panicle inflorescence. The global drupe is deep purple when ripe.

This plant originates in India, and grows mainly in tropical areas. It is commonly planted on plains in Taiwan. It is of genus bauhinia of family caesalpiniaceae, a small defoliate tree that can grow to five meters tall. The stalk often bends or grows sideward. It grows very fast. The alternate leaf splits at the tip. The flower is big with a bright purple color, with purple-red vein on the carina keel.

This is a plant very similar to Japanese silvergrass (miscanthus floridulus), but it is shorter and with narrower leaves. It grows mostly on dry riverbeds, with white flowers. The waves of flowers of this plant can be seen on riverbeds everywhere in Taiwan. It is a beautiful view.

This plant is about 1-3 meters tall, with leaves of serrate edges like those of sugarcane. It blooms in autumn with big panicle inflorescene. The flower cone is white with a slight red shade, with two tiny opposite flowers. The subterranean stalk grows very fast, and the new bud is edible, often eaten as bamboo shoots. The leaf is a good-quality forage. In earlier years, the farmers used to use the dried leaves of this plant to make the roof of the cottage. This is a big or medium evergreen tree that grows very fast. There are many holes on the bark. The twigs are covered with dense hair. The leaf is cordate, oblique at the base and acute at the tip, with serrulate edges. There are hair on the surface and the back of the leaf. The flower is yellowish-green. The oval drupe is about three millimeters in diameter, and black when ripe. It commonly grows on plains and low-altitude areas. The fibers of the tensile bark can be used to make ropes or in textile. It is one of the major trees in secondary broadleaved forests. Because it is very tall, so the crown is often at the top of the forest. This is a perennial evergreen semi-crawling shrub, introduced to Taiwan by the Dutch in the 17^th century. It is 1.5-3 meters high, with a stimulating odor. It likes sunshine, high temperature, and a dry environment. It is very easy to plant, with a variety of colors. When it blooms, the tiny flowers on the same inflorescene show different shades of colors according to respective degrees of maturity. This plant is a very important source of nectar for butterflies. After the blooming season, all it needs is a little trimming and some fertilizer, which will make it grow and bloom. The juice of the branch, leaf, and green fruit is poisonous. This is an annual herb, taller than floss flower. The whole plant is covered with dense multicellular hair. The leaf is heart-shaped with a petiole. The capitellum is dense and arranged as corymb. This is a perennial herb, about 1-3 meters tall. The bird is about 18-20 centimeters in length, with wings about 9 centimeters long. There are two sub-species in Taiwan. The brown shrike is red-brown on the back, with dark-brown wings. The forehead and eyebrows are white. The venter is white, with a little orange shade on the chest. The female is dark brown on the back, without obvious eyebrow spots, and light brown venter . There are also some birds with spots on the chest. The other sub-species is L.a. superciliosus. The male is grey-brown from the head to the back. The place of the origin of drinking water in Fenglin is an important place of recreation for the people, and also a very good bird-watching spot. This super-beautiful bird, voted to be the County Bird (said to be the most beautiful bird in Taiwan) is amazingly common in this area. It is an endemic sub-species, endangered but protected. The whole body is black and brilliant red. The chest of the female has a lighter shade with dark brown spots. It lives in the upper levels of low-altitude broad-leaved forests. It rarely chirps, but occasionally makes a coarse “ya—” sound, and sometimes a series of “ko, ko” sounds.

This bird can be as long as 65 centimeters, with the tail two-thirds of the whole length. It lives in hilly or low-altitude mountain areas. Groups of this bird can be seen flying in the forests. The body is bright blue, the beak is red, and the tip of the long tail is white. This big bird is not afraid of humans, so it can be seen in places near human settlements and communities. It feeds on various foods, including snakes, birds, insects, and fruits.

The bird builds a bowl-shaped nest on trees in areas where forests and weeds meet. There are usually 4 to 6 eggs in each nest. It is a social bird, and lives in groups. In the breeding season, birds of the same group often help the parents to feed the chicks. It is very protective of the nest, and will attack any intruders until they leave.

Brief Introduction:

This is an endemic species that lives in the broad-leaved forests or substitution forests of low- and medium-altitude areas. With round wings, the bird does not fly well. The body is of a protective green color, except the head, which is red, black, yellow, and blue. Therefore it is nicknamed “five-color bird.” It usually appears on the upper levels of the forests, and very hard to find because of the green color. Its voice is like the low, monotonous “ko, ko” sounds of a monk knocking on the temple block. Therefore, it is also nicknamed “the colorful monk in the woods.”

This is a common species of butterfly that lives in low-altitude areas, and can be seen in Japan and Southeast Asia. The larva feeds on citric leaves of family rutaceae. There are two types of the female, one with a tail-tip on the hindwing, and one without, both with white spots. The male’s hindwings are bright blue, without white spots, very different from the female. This is also its distinguishing characteristic from popilo protenor. It can be seen in all seasons. But in the northern areas, it is mostly seen in summer.

The adult appears between March and October, often in shady and wet woods, mimicking a dried leaf to avoid enemies. It likes to suck the fermented fruit juice or tree juice. It is a large butterfly, with wings 8-10.5 centimeters wide when spread. The surface of the wing is brown, with a blue line on the base. There is an orange band in the center of the forewing. The opposite is earth-brown, with a dark vein like the venation of a dried leaf. The female is slightly bigger, with a lighter shade of color and a more conspicuous tip on the hindwing.
