Brief Introduction:

Chi-ke Mountain is about 800 meters high, abundant with red bark

The early settlers made a living in agriculture. In 1963, some farmers went back to their hometown Meishan, Chiayi, and returned with day lily flowers, which they began to plant on a large scale. Because of the suitable humidity and soft soil, Chi-ke Mountain quickly became one of the five major producing areas of day lily flowers in Taiwan. Every year in August and September, the whole area is covered with golden flowers and looks just picturesque. The beautiful flowers, the local specialties like green-jade bamboo shoots and oolong tea, together with the natural sceneries of the East Coast Mountains, make Chi-ke Mountain a delicate leisure ranch.

Name of Production: Agriculture

Name of Town: Yuli Town

Name of County: Hualien County

Category of Production: Agriculture

Brief Introduction: The main agricultural products in Yuli are rice, day lily flowers, watermelons, and tea. Rice is one of the most important. With good irrigation facilities and adequate fertilizers, the production has increased in both quantity and quality, especially the quality organic rice. The method of planting this rice is to exclude all the chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and use only natural organic fertilizers and pesticides. No chemical residue is left in this organic rice, and it is therefore safer and more healthful. In 1997, the Tungfeng Organic Rice Production Squad was organized to promote the production and development of this quality organic rice. According to the statistics of the second season of 2001, the total rice-producing area of Yuli was 2,515.013 hectares, and the cultivated land was 2,881.98 hectares, with a total production of 13,643,293 kilograms. Day lily flowers are also a very important produce, with Chi-ke Mountain as the main producing place, with an area of more than 200 hectares. Other districts like Kuan-yin, Tungfeng, and Lohe also produce day lily flowers, with an area of about 300 hectares in total. The annual total is about 150 metric tons. Because of the “Incident of Sulfur Dioxide” discovered by the Consumers’ Foundation, and the smuggling of day lily flowers from China, the production of day lily flowers in Yuli has declined considerably. Watermelons are produced in the districts of Tayu and Sanmin, by the middle section of Hsiukuluan River. They are sold along Highway 9 when in season. The tea was first planted as an experiment in recent years in the higher mountains, such as Chi-ke Mountains, and the quality has been found as very gods. Therefore, tea has become a plant of great economic potential. The experimental planting area is about 3 to 5 hectares. There are other agricultural products like betel nuts and azedrarach in the town.
