Name of Plant: Day Lily (金針花)

Other Names: Yellow Day Lily, Long Yellow Day Lily, Common Yellow Day Lily

Name of Town: Yuli Town

Name of County: Hualien County

Family of Plant: Liliaceae

Brief Introduction:

The day lily is a perennial herb of genus hemerocallis of family liliaceae. The shape of the orange or deep yellow flower is like that of the lily. It grows in areas between 600 to 1,000 meters in altitude in China, Southeast Asia, Japan, Siberia, and eastern Europe. The frigid day lily blooms in August and September, and the tropical day lily blooms in May and June. The flower can be picked and used as a vegetable before it fully blooms. If the flower is not picked when it is ripe, it will bloom in the morning and fade at sunset. It is therefore named “one-day flower” or “day lily.” The leaf of the plant is a very good material for making “day lily paper,” a very high-quality paper for Chinese painting. The roots and the stem are also used to cure swellings and pains. Every part of the plant can be used, so it is really a useful plant.
