TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME - YEAR A 6th/7th SEPTEMBER, 2014.
I have always believed that much of our Christian life is centred on relationships. First is our relationship with God which can be fostered through prayer and obedience to the word of God among other things. Next and equally important is relationship with the neighbour. The latter is so important that Jesus makes the final judgement depend on relationship with other people. In that famous passage on the final judgement in the Gospel according to St. Mathew (25:45) we have the words ‘whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me’ . In the Epistles, we are further made to see the importance of fostering this relationship when St John states that whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 1 John 4:20
Yet, relationship with the neighbour is often challenging because of human imperfections. People get offended by the actions and attitudes of others. Expectations are not often met and promises are not always kept. Today’s Gospel teaches us how to treat those who offend us; correct them with love and patience. The problem in our relationships sometimes is not that we have been offended, but that we are afraid to admit that we have been offended. Even when we do admit it, it is often first to the wrong person; the one who hasn’t offended us. The real offender may actually be the last person to learn that he has done something wrong. The first option given in the Gospel today is settle it between yourselves.
This is my last weekend in the parish as I move to my new parish, Highcliffe, after the 5 pm mass on Sunday. I want to use this opportunity to thank every member of the parish for the times we have spent together in prayer, in sharing the word of God and the Eucharist. I have been here for about 18 weeks and it’s been time well spent. Thank you for being supportive.

Fr. Paul
