Katie Johnston, Year 9, last year completed her GCSE Spanish and achieved an A*.
David McCrea and Stuart Webster (last year’s U6) shared first prize in Foyle Film Festival Awards for their A Level Moving Image Arts film submission. David’s and Stuart’s films were given a special screening recently at the QFT as part of The Belfast Festival. Their films were selected as the best work from within the UK for the first prize. Jamie Pow, Clare Smyth, James Thompson and Jonathan Scott were recognised recently in The SEELB Outstanding Achievement Awards 2010 for being placed first or joint first in an external examination in Northern Ireland (in the case of James, 2 subjects). Wallace was the school with the highest number of awards in the Academic Success category.
Pupil Success – Sporting
Swimming
Lucy Scott and Peter Sands enjoyed a busy half-term warm weather training for one week in Tenerife with the Ulster Schools’ Squad, where both of them were captains. Peter prepared for the Short Course Nationals in Galway where he gave an excellent performance receiving 2 medals in relays, and more importantly achieving 17.04 for 1500m freestyle, breaking Adam Matthew’s record. Lucy participated in the Grammar Schools’ swimming gala and achieved gold in 50m fly at Intermediate level, however her time was at a Senior level.
Boys’ Hockey
Mark Acheson, Jack Wilson and Ross Kelly (all Year 11) made debut appearances for the Ulster U16 squad in Dublin recently. Ross and Jack have been selected to attend Irish trials in Dublin on 5 December.
Sporting Fixtures: Major Competitions
Girls’ Hockey: for the first time a 1st XI girls’ side has progressed to the semi-final of the Schools’ Cup having defeated Armagh Royal, Larne Grammar and most recently Ballymena Academy, on the way to the semi-finals where they met Victoria College. They then lost in penalty strokes to Lurgan College in the final.
Lisa Whitten has been selected for U19 Northern Ireland Netball Squad.
ICT Innovation
Two Upper Sixth students, Ashley Hunter and Mark Thompson, have successfully created an app “Penguin Slider” for the iPad and now for the iPhone. An article will appear in “The Daily Telegraph” business section tomorrow, Tuesday 1 February.
Young Enterprise
‘Le Dessin’, one of the school’s Young Enterprise companies, has been selected to represent Northern Ireland in Slovakia.
Comic Relief: Aaron Ritchie, Upper Sixth, was ‘Principal for the Day’ on Friday, 18 March 2011. £3,000 was raised during a week of activities with funds going to Comic Relief, Food for Thought, Diabetes UK and the Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund.
Ski Trip: a group of 22 pupils and 3 teachers enjoyed a recent trip to Waterville Valley, New Hampshire.
Sporting Final Fever: teams have reached a large number of finals so far this year. These include Ferris Cup Year 10 Boys’ Hockey, Girls 1st XI Schools’ Cup, Girls’ 2nd XI McDowell, Netball Intermediate Squad Schools’ Cup, Netball Junior Squad Schools’ Plate. 1st XV reached semi final of Schools’ Plate, losing in a replay against Bangor Grammar. Medallion defeated by Campbell in the Medallion Shield Competition.

3rd XV team was defeated by RBAI in the semi final of their Cup and 2nd XV team is in the final of the Plate. Badminton players acquitted themselves very well having qualified for The Ulster Badminton Finals with three teams winning their sections and qualifying for the Irish Finals later this term.


COPE Success
Nine U6 students have successfully completed the “Certificate of Personal Effectiveness” qualification gaining an additional 70 UCAS points.
John Roberts (Year 14) was recently awarded a medal for best speaker in this year’s Northern Ireland French Debate Competition.
Jacqueline Boyes (Year 14) was awarded 2nd prize in the Santander Spanish Essay Competition – the prize is a £500 scholarship to Queen’s University Belfast and Wallace is awarded £250 for Spanish resources.
Sarah Stevenson (Year 13) and Chloe Carson (Year 11) have been selected to take part in the UK German Connection two week course in Germany this summer.
Young Enterprise
“Generations”, one of the companies established in Wallace this year won the Northern Ireland final of the Company of the Year. This company established a record label, designing, producing and selling CDs by Wallace pupils and local artists.
Names of entrepreneurs: Aaron Callaghan, Ben Ashby, Jonathan McMurray, Andrew Cairns, Neil Mulholland, Iain McAleavey, Charlotte Nelson and Joanna Guthrie.
