Cyril Emerson Hughes was born on the 6th September 1889 at Launceston, Cornwall. His father, James Emerson Hughes was a Station Master. At some stage his family emigrated to Australia moving to Tasmania and Hughes was educated at Hobart and Sydney. He qualified as a Civil Engineer and in the pre-war years worked as Assistant Civil Engineer on the Rosebery Model and Industrial Suberb at Waterloo Sydney New South Wales. With the out break of WW1 volunteered to serve in the Australian Imperial Force and enlisted as a Private on 20th January 1915. He gave his address as Deloraine, Tasmania and his age as 25. He joined the 1st Australian Light horse and embarked aboard the transport HMAT "Clan MacCorquodale" at Sydney on 6th February 1915. He proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, on 9th April 1915 and saw active service at Gallipoli. The light horse were initially considered unsuitable for the Gallipoli operation but were soon deployed without their horses to reinforce the infantry. The 1st Light horse Regiment landed on 12 May 1915 and was attached to the New Zealand and Australian Division. It played a defensive role for most of the campaign but mounted an attack on the Turkish position known as "the Chessboard" as part of the August offensive on 7 August 200 men were invilved, 147 became casualties. The regiment left Gallipoli on 21 December 1915. Hughes had been admitted to hospital at Mudros, diagnosed with Pyrexia, on 25th July 1915 and having recovered rejoined his unit on 28th August 1915. However Hughes was not destined to serve the full period in Gallipoli with his unit, his previous occupation catching up with him and he was taken on the strenght of the 8th Field company, Australian Engineers on 23rd October 1915. He served with this unit in the Darfur Operations, in the Sudan from 1st March to 31st December 1916, receiving the scarce Khedive's Sudan medal with clasp, a unique award to an Australian, the roll listing only one member of the AIF present in the operations, this presumably being Hughes. He was attached for Administrative Duties at the Australian Headquarters Cairo, Egypt, on 1st January 1917, being promoted Tempoary Quarter Master Sergeant on 10th January 1917. It appears that Hughes was then commissioned in the field, being promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 1st February 1917, at the same time leaving the Australian headquarters at Cairo. He was admitted to 19th General Hospital, suffering from malaria, on 16th June 1917, having been promoted Lieutenant on 3rd June and having recovred he was discharged to duty on 29th June 1917. He was again hospitalized, being admitted to the 43rd Stationary Hospital on 1st October 1917 suffering from Appendicitis. He returned to duty at Moascar on 26th November 1917 having been placed on the regimental seconded list from 1st October 1917. With the end of WW1, Hughes was embarked from Salonika to Gallipoli, being posted as Officer in Charge of Graves on 8th December 1918. He was taken on the strength of the Graves Registration Unit on 27th December 1918. He embarked from Alexandria to the UK on duty on 22nd 1919, having been promoted Temporary Captain on 29th May 1919. I was at this stage that he joined the Imperial War Graves Commission and he resigned his appointment with the Australian Imperial Force in consequence of being demobilized on 22nd October 1919. His initial work as an officer in charge of graves at Gallipoli appears to have earned him the award of the Member of the Order of the British Empire, M.B.E. military division, London Gazette 12 December 1919, Commonwealth Gazette 25th March 1920. He was made Director of Work with the Imperial War Graves Commission at Gallipoli and was a key man on the spot involved in negotiations with the Turkish Authorities with regards the creation of Australian War Memorials and cemeteries on the Gallipoli Peninsula. For his invaluable work, of key visual remembrance to this day to anyone visiting Gallipoli, Hughes was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1924 on the completion of his project. He had also been appointed Senior British Representative fro the Anglo-Turkish War Graves Commission. Continuing his work with the Imperial War Graves Commission he became Chief Administrative Officer of the IWGC Eastern District and was member of the British Delegation to the Montreauix Conference on the Militarisation of the Dardenelles in 1916. He had been made honourary Colonel with the Australian Citizen Forces in 1929, apparently back dated 1919 by Lord Stonehaven. Governor-General of Australia. He retired from the IWGC at around the same time and having made numerous contacts within the Political powers of Australia including personally knowing a number of Prime Ministers he was appointed Australian Trade Commissioner to Egypt in 1937, at a sensitive time, with the Palestine Arab Rebolt in full motion. He completed this role with the Trade Commission and on the outbreak of WW2 he rejoined the Army serving with the Royal Engineers, seeing service in the Middle East and North Africa and attained the rank of Brigadier General. He died in 1958. He had been awarded the Order of the Nile, believed to be for services during WW1 and his Greek Order of the Redeemer, probably for his work in Salonika towards the end of the war, or for work in the IWGC. $3500
