Girl # 10Non-Participant in Team SportsAge: 15 School: Emanuel Lutheran School Place: Ghana, Africa Date/Time: 9/28/06 2:15 PM Gender roles of adolescent girls in the community: I can see myself becoming a good girl and becoming a medical doctor. I see myself getting around friends to study, especially my brother and sister. I also see myself telling my mother any problem that I have and respecting people of all kinds. My responsibilities include waking up in the morning to help with housework, preparing my brother and sister for school, cooking, and doing wash on the weekends. I always dress my little bothers and sisters for school and church. Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports: I believe that my roles in my community are very good rather than following friends who go play sport. I like girls who play sport, but I believe that they will become a sport lover. I think they are wasting their time on things that they will not do in the future. I think they just want to be known on the camp or in the community. Furthermore, I believe that they don’t have work at home to do. Some community members share the same thinking as me, but others think well about girls playing sport. For example, some community members believe it is good for their future. Girl # 11Team Kickball ParticipantAge: 13 School: Emanuel Lutheran Place: Ghana, Africa Date/Time: 9/28/06 2:15PM Gender roles of adolescent girls in the community: I keep myself clean and help my mother in the kitchen. Adolescents shall behave like an adolescent and not get themselves into trouble that will keep them out of school. Girls play kickball among themselves modeling competition. Adolescent girls also instruct little ones or friends of our age to do the right thing at the right time. I think our gender roles have a good performance in the community. I do not see mothers fighting with their children, and I do not see mothers fighting among each other. Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports: I believe that playing kickball is good for the body and it keeps you active and healthy. It keeps you out of confusion and helps in making friends by drawing more people closer to you. It also keeps girls out of expenses because by playing kickball, schools will give you a scholarship. I enjoy girls playing sports and I like to see them playing. Kickball releases the minds of those who watch the game from some problem. Some community members think positive and some think negative about girls playing sport. Gender roles of girls in the community changes when they play sport in that girls become responsible to their sport and it takes their minds off the streets. This makes their parents to have more respect for them. As a woman, it is important to be watchful of the monthly period. Since I became to know myself, I have been very careful in my community because my parents told me about the good side as a woman and the bad side. I have become an advisor to some of my friends who are the same age as me or who are becoming my age. I think this role is very good. Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports: I feel very good playing kickball because I enjoy the game so much that it keeps me out of trouble. I go out and teach my friends about the game and what it does for an adolescent girl. It gives you strength and keeps you healthy. It also helps you to be able to meet with good people and make friends. I see some changes in the lives of girls who play sport. They go out and meet with educated people who teach them educated things. Sport makes girls travel far and near. Community members feel fine about adolescent girls playing sport because they see some changes in girls and sport helps girls in developing their minds on both sport and education. Playing kickball has helped me to become focused and stay off the streets. Girl # 13Team Kickball ParticipantAge: 13 School: Buduburam Community School Place: Ghana, Africa Date/Time: 10/6/06 10:10 AM Gender roles of adolescent girls in the community: I see myself as a small child to obey older people in my community and also to love my friends. I help to clean up my area and also help my mother to do many things such as taking care of my little sisters. I also help my friends and obey them as well. I feel good about my roles. Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports: I see myself as a “big player”. Kickball makes me feel good and to see myself as a good person. I think kickball is the best thing to do. It is good for girls. They feel good about playing. I use sport to encourage my friends and also to do the right thing. I used to play around with friends. Since I began playing kickball, my playing time with friends has changed to a limited and restricted time. Girl # 14Non-Participant of Team SportsAge: 16 School: Fundamental Baptist Place: Ghana, Africa Date/Time: 10/6/06 2:03 PM Gender roles of adolescent girls in the community: I see myself as a girl who is determined to learn and who is very important in society and in my community. I see myself as a respectful girl in the community. I respect my friends’ and elders’ views. I help people to so many things such as teaching little ones with their lessons and helping them when they are in need. I also clean around my community, especially in my area. I advise my friends to take the right direction and not the wrong one. As an adolescent, it is the right time to do my roles until I grow older. Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports: I believe that girls who play sports are making themselves fit and keeping themselves strong. People in the community believe that girls play sports to prepare for their future. |
