Interview Portraits

Girl #1

Non-Participant of Team Sports

Age: 13

School: Emmanuel Lutheran

Place: Ghana, Africa

Date/Time: 9/28/06 2:20PM

Gender roles of adolescent girls in the community:
I want to become a “good person”, be respectful, and be non-violent. I “should” be obedient and should not insult older people. My responsibilities as a girl is to finish my education, avoid teenage pregnancy, display no bad conduct, and do my best to please others in the community.
I want to be obedient because it shows that I am a good child and come from a good home. As a female, it is good to be presentable, respectful, and humble throughout the day. By pleasing the community, I can receive help when I need it because my parents cannot always provide for me.
It is good to be obedient because the Bible says one should be obedient. “I feel comfortable being an obedient child.”
Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports:
Sport is a good thing and it is good for girls to play sports. It helps them to learn how to run, kick, and be friendly with teammates. The community enjoys girls’ kickball and is comfortable with how the girls kick. The community feels that girls who play kickball show that they are not lazy.
“I don’t like women playing football because it’s for men….it’s too much for women.” Playing football makes women look like men in their bodies.

Girl # 2

Team Kickball Participant

Age: 14

School: A-47 Christian Academy

Place: Ghana, Africa

Date/Time: 9/30/06 12: 40 PM

Gender roles of adolescent girls in the community:
I like to be myself in the community, and I am “how I take myself to be.” My responsibilities in my community include cleaning up the community, such as the gutter, helping people do their work when they ask, and looking after other people’s children when their parents aren’t around. I believe my responsibilities are good because when you help others, they help you in return when you are in need.
Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports:
Playing kickball is exercise everyday, and when I play kickball, I play my best and do my best. My parents and friends feel proud of what I do. My friends tell me that I am too tall for kickball and that I should play basketball. But I continue to play kickball regardless of what they say.
Girls play kickball in my community because it gives then something to do. They don’t know what they want to be in the future so for now they play sport. Girls want to “be someone” in society. It helps them to help their parents.
I do not see any changes in my community role since I began playing sport.

Girl # 3

Team Kickball Participant

Age: 17 (as of August 17, 2006)

School: A-47 Christian Academy

Place: Ghana, Africa

Date/Time: 9/30/06 1:15 PM

Gender roles of adolescent girls in the community:
I do things for my parents so they can be happy and proud and so I can gain money and have a “bright future”. Many of the things I do as responsibilities in my community is learn to cook, braid hair, and take care of children. I do everything that God wants us girls to do. My gender roles in the community make me feel good and happy.
Gender roles of adolescent girls who play sports:
It is good for me to play kickball. It is a part of education and helps you get friends and to communicate. Some girls play kickball because they like it and because they want to learn sport. They also want to play it for their country. By playing kickball, I can go back to Liberia in my future and play kickball.
The community likes girls playing kickball and football (soccer). When girls play, small children can join in and play too.
There have been no changes in my responsibilities or expectations since I began playing sport.
NOTE: The participant used the words kickball and baseball interchangeably. She may have used the word football interchangeably as well.

I am a child in my community where I am free with people. I am good, respectful, open, and honest. I teach little ones, sing for people, work for people, and play games. In my community, people “expect” me to be respectful. “I feel very good (about my roles in the community)…when I’m in the community, I see others being disrespectful and I say ‘no’, that is not good. I am a child of God. I want to be good.”

I was sad before playing kickball. Now I am active and not sick. People know me to be active.
