216 Correspondence - 29 Sep 1991 letter & Family Group Sheets from Eugene M. Felsman, Flathead Tribal Historian, 108 1/2 5th Ave. East, Polson, MT 59860 to William Powers.

217 Louis Vanderburg’s actual birth date is in question. His death certificate says he was 106, while his obituaries say he was either 104 or 108 when he died in 1923. His obituary ("Ronan, MT Pioneer," 24 Aug 1923) further says that he "dated his age from the arrival of Father DeSmet, believing he was 22 years old then. However, it is not known whether or not he witnessed the arrival of the priest in the Bitter Root Valley in 1837 or the Flathead Valley in 1841. It is believed that the earlier date is correct because his family is known to have lived near the site of Stevensville about that time." Flathead Indian census records point more toward the 1832 time frame; and the 1920 census gives his age as 87, putting his birth around 1833. The census records are probably the closest to the truth.
