ANGELINE MAHALA7 VANDERBURGH (Richard6, John W.5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), daughter of Richard Vanderburgh and Eunice Southworth, was born in Jefferson Co., NY in Oct 1831.333 In 1850, she is recorded twice in the census; living in Alexandria, Jefferson County, where as "Angeline," she was either residing with her mother and step father334 or as "Mahala," living with the William Newman family who lived next door.335

Angeline married around 1856 EPHRAIM WEMPLE. Ephraim was born in New York in Jul 1833.336 By 1890, they had relocated to Huron, Beadle Co., SD where Ephraim was a census enumerator that year.337

In 1900, Ephraim and Angeline were living in Theresa Township in Beadle County where Ephraim was a farmer. Living with them was their 18 year old grandson, Richard Claxton, who was born in New York in Oct 1881.338 Angeline died on 29 Dec 1904 in Huron.339 Her husband and grandson were still farming in Theresa, SD in 1910.340 Children:341

i. Ada E., b. May 1858 in NY. At age 42 in 1900, she was an

unmarried school teacher living with her parents in Theresa, SD.

"She took up a homestead and worked so hard that her mind

became effected [sic] and had to be put into a state hospital,

where she died.342


ii. daughter, m. pre 1881 in NY, ______ Claxton, d. prior to 1900.

i. Richard, b. Oct 1881 in NY. In 1900 and 1910, he

lived with his grandparents in South Dakota. He

m. Hilda Olson of Yankton, SD.343

XX. MARY7 VANDERBURGH (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), daughter of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin, was born about 1829 in Wayne County, New York. She married JAMES GREEN, son of Nathan Green and Mary A. Johnson. They lived at Huron in Wayne County. James died on 22 Mar 1896 at the age of 67 years, 5 months, and 24 days. Mary died on 18 Sep 1902 at the age of 72 years. Both are buried in Huron. Children:

i. James, Jr., b. ca. 1855 in NY State. Unmarried in 1880 and living

at home. No descendants.

ii. Lodema, b. ca. 1864. At home in 1880. She married Frank Abbott

and had a son, Clayton who lived at Walcott, NY.344

XX. ELEANOR7 VANDERBURGH (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), daughter of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin, was born about 1832 in Huron, Wayne County, New York. She married, probably in Michigan, J. MCCABE. J. McCabe supposedly became insane and was confined for many years because he was violent. Child:

i. Son, lived in Everett, WA.345

XX. JAMES MASON7 VANDERBURG (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin, was born about 1834. He married, first, MARY ______. He married, second, MARY ______.

John dropped the "h" from his last name and lived for a time in Charlotte, MI. He is buried in Benton Harbor, MI. Children:


i. Leland

ii. Della.346

XX. MARTIN7 VANDERBURGH (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin, was born about 1837 in Huron, Wayne County, New York.

Martin served in the Civil War in Company "S" of the 2nd Regiment of New York Heavy Artillery and Company "A" of the 9th Regiment of New York Heavy Artillery. After the war, he married AGNES AKIN and permanently settled in Michigan. Martin died on 15 Nov 1871 and is buried at Watervliet, Berrien Co., MI.

After Martin's death, Agnes married, second, Benjamin Heffner, a German widower and neighbor. Martin and Agnes had a least one child:
+ i. John Martin, b. ca. 1870, m. 1890s Ella Summerill.347

XX. MARGARET7 VANDERBURGH (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), daughter of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin) was born about 1839 in Wayne County, New York. She married, probably in Berrien CO., MI. She had two husbands, one of whom was ______ WHITNEY. She probably died prior to 1877 since she is not mentioned as an heir in the settlement of her mother's estate.348

XX. JAMES7 VANDERBURGH (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin, was born about 1841 in Wayne County, New York. He served in the Civil War in Company "A" of the 9th Regiment of New York Heavy Artillery and returned to farm in Wayne County after the war. Here, he married, JANE A. (PERSONS) WHITING, who was born in 1841 in Massachusetts, and died in 1905. Jane had been previously married and had a daughter, Martha E. Whiting, born about 1863, who was living with her mother and step-father in Huron in 1870, 1875 and 1880. James died in 1910. He and his wife are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Huron, Wayne Co., NY. Children, all born in Wayne Co., NY:
i. Carrie Eleanor, b. ca. 1867, living at home in 1870 and 1880. She

married ______ Harper.[2]

ii. James, Jr., b. 1871, m. May ______, d. 1931, buried Evergreen

Cemetery, Huron, Wayne Co., NY. No children. May survived

her husband and lived at Wolcott, Wayne Co., NY.

iii. Bert H.; b. 1877; m. Ida B. ______, b. 1874, d. 1923; d. 1925. Bert

and Ida are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Huron, Wayne Co.,

NY. No children.349

XX. JANE7 VANDERBURGH (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), daughter of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin, was born about 1843 in Wayne County, New York. She married ______ MANLEY, probably in Berrien Co., MI.350

XX. SILAS7 VANDERBURGH (John6-5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of John Vanderburgh and Mary Ann McLaughlin, was born about 1845 in Wayne County, New York. He was married, lived in Michigan and had no children.351

XX. LOUIS FERDINAND7 VANDERBURGH (John Bradley6, James5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of John Bradley Vanderburgh and Catherine Weld, was born in 1855. In 1899, he married, first, MARGARET GEDDES MORRIS, born on 20 Mar 1881 in Methuen, MA, the daughter of James P. Morris and Agnes LaMontaine..

Louis was a bookkeeper/accountant and at one time occupied office space with his brother, Harry at 50 Church St. in New York City. In addition to living in New York City, Louis lived at Rochester, NY; Hackensack, NJ; and the Boston, MA area.

After the death of his wife, Margaret, on 28 Apr 1915, Louis gave indefinite custody of his children (ages 4-14), along with a financial support agreement, to his wife's sister, Jessie A. Rolfe of Lowell, MA. In 1918, Louis married, second, GLADYS PARKS of New York City, and returned to live in Massachusetts. This same year, Louis petitioned for the return of his children from the custody of Jessie Rolfe. His request was denied and guardianship of the children was retained by her.

Louis died on 31 Jan 1920 and was buried at Hackensack, NJ. Children:


i. Geraldine Geddes, b. 1900, unmarried, d. 1988. She

graduated from Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA

and was a registered nurse who later became a nurse

anesthetist. She served in that capacity until her

retirement in 1967.

ii. Lester B., living in 1992.

iii. Vivian Weld, b. 1902, d. suddenly on 23 Jul 1916 at

the age of 14 years.

iv. Warren Morris, b. 1908, m. 1942 Edna Tosi, d. 1983.

Warren graduated from Northeastern University in

1941 with and L.L.B. degree. After 30 years service

in the US Army, he retired in 1963. Most notable

among his Army assignments was his membership in the

War Crimes Tribunal at Dachau, Germany in 1946

participating in the trial of Nazi war criminals.

v. Arnott Knowles, b. 1910. Living in California in 1992.352

XX. HERMAN7 VANDERBURGH (John Bradley6, James5, William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of John Bradley Vanderburgh and Catherine Weld, was born in Jul 1864. In 1900, he was unmarried and worked as an office clerk in New York City. At that time, he resided with his mother. Herman married soon after 1900 and probably lived in Rochester, NY thereafter. Children:
i. Richard Knowles, was married and died in 1972. Children:
i. Kenneth, living at Spokane, WA in 1992.

ii. Donald, was married, and died prior to 1991. Four children.353
