Geographic distribution: Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America, Pacific Ocean islands, and New Zealand. Brazil (PE, GO, RJ, SP, PR, RS).

Comments: Benthic in tropical and temperate continental fresh waters, including lakes, wells, moist soils, moss, and phytotelmata. The genus is in need of revision; certain taxa that were synonymized by Lang (1948) with P. viguieri may be valid (Bozic, 1966; Lehman & Reid, 1993).
