Lonergan's categories are used to address the confusion of definitions and labels that has characterized studies of Roman Catholic Modernism and of religious thinkers at the turn of the 20th century. The positions of Ward, Tyrrell and von Huegel are differentiated as examples of the helpfulness of such a framework and the broader perspective it provides for integrating the work of many theologians and historians.
