Office of the Dean of Students #2206 Converse Hall 105 Dear Dean Boykin-East: I am organizing a symposium on health care disparities titled “Eliminating Health Care Disparities: Present and Future Trends” on Saturday, November 2nd through the Charles Drew Memorial Cultural House. Three members of the Center for Healthy Families and Cultural Diversity at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Robert C. Like, M.D., Katherine D. Chung, M.D., and Benjamin F. Crabtree, Ph.D., will be coming to speak on racial disparities in medicine. They will provide information on the many dimensions and implications of this problem as well as strategies for diminishing health care disparities. I believe that many Amherst students and faculty will have an interest in this issue as biomedical ethics and diversity issues are becoming more prominent and relevant in our everyday lives. I hope that their presentation will make the Amherst College community more aware of health care disparities and will generate intelligent discussions among students and faculty. Organizing an event of this magnitude requires supplemental funding from sources other than Drew House, so I was hoping I could receive some additional funding through the Office of the Dean of Students. I have attached an itemized budget for this event. I am seeking funding from other sources as well, so any support you can provide is greatly appreciated.
