Balder and Loki

Balder, bringer of the light,

His beauty lit the darkest night,

Beloved of gods and all creation

All swore to him their dedication.

Their promises worked like a charm

And nothing now could do him harm.

The gods made sport and tried to fight him

Their feeble efforts would delight him

Whatever weapons they might choose

Fell harmlessly, all to amuse.

Loki alone, filled with malice

In disguise went to the palace

Found the secret of his strength,

Vowed to go to any length

To kill the god all held so dear

Of mistletoe he made a spear

The spear was hurled and Balder fell
