U17 Shires Final 2011
The U 17 team had a good season beating all the regional teams in the Shires league and were then invited to compete in the Shires finals. This was held on 1st May at Hertfordshire Sports Village, competing against the top 8 teams in the Country.

Back Row: Sarah Stannett, Nick Downard, Hayley Duckett, Viki Williams, Tom Kent, Craig Muir, Andrew Stride

Front Row : Kelvin Latimer, Melissa Stride
The first draw gave us a match against Lancashire who had several England players and so we were expecting a close match. We had a slow start with only our youngsters Kelvin & Melissa winning a close match in the mixed 21-19. In the boys' singles Tom had a tough match against Tom Wolfenden and played very well but the result did not reflect the balance of play. Kelvin battled hard to win his singles 21-16 but we were unable to win any more boys' singles so at the start of the girls' singles we were 2-6 down. The girls produced some excellent results with Viki, Hayley, Melissa and Sarah all winning, so levelling the score at 6-6. We were only able to win 1 of the 4 boys’ doubles with Kelvin & Craig producing a good result at 21-19 against the Lancs second pair. Our girls had to fight hard to win the match and they all produced very good performances to give us a 3-1 win in the doubles. This gave us a draw at 10-10 but we unfortunately lost the match by 17 points.

We went into the second draw to play for 5th – 8th position. Staffordshire were our next opponents who again had a strong boys' team. The mixed produced some very close games with Nick & Viki just going down 20-21 and Andrew & Hayley losing 19-21. Kelvin & Melissa broke the mixed duck by winning the 4th mixed 21-11.The boys' singles was as tough as expected with Craig playing very well to win his match 21-16. So at the start of the girls' singles we were once again 2-6 down. The girls dominated the singles 4-0 to even the match at 6-6. The boys’ doubles gave us one end with Kelvin & Craig winning against the second pair but Tom and Nick were unlucky to lose 19-21 to the same pair. Well done the girls again as they won all 4 matches to give us an 11-9 win which meant we were now playing for 5th or 6th position.

We were on a high to face the old arch enemy Yorkshire. Again close matches in the mixed with Kelvin & Melissa winning theirs but only 10 points separating the other 3 mixed games. Tom faced Yorkshire's No1 boy in an exciting match but just went down 18-21 and Nick also going down in a close match 20-21. Kelvin kept hopes alive with a win. Hurray for the girls again who all won the singles and the doubles with 3 going to 21-20. The boys knew we had to fight for every point and did so with Kelvin and Craig gaining 18 points against the 2nd pair to finish the match at 10-10 with just a 3 point margin to Hampshire. But a win is a win - even sweeter against the old foe.
So we came 5th at the end of a hard day in which the girls all shone in the singles and doubles. We had a young team with Viki, Sarah and Melissa and Tom, Nick and Kelvin all available next season. Report by Alan & Shirley Baker

HAMPSHIRE WON 4 - 2
With Cheshire beating Surrey better than 4 -2, Hampshire took 2nd place in this box leaving them finishing overall in 11th place?? (no final official standings shown on the day and no official results found on BE website).
Overall the team played well and with a little bit of luck could have been higher placed. Some of the individual matches were quite tight and in the match versus Worcestershire, two events were lost in the third end 22/24 and 19/21. If we could have taken those, a 1 - 5 loss would have reverted to 3 - 3 draw and possibly placed us in a better position to proceed to the higher placings. Thanks to Kieran Dix for providing the score sheets and a précis of the weekend’s proceedings for this event. EDITOR

2011 EUROPEAN BADMINTON CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Report by Steve Smith
The 2011 European Badminton Club Championships were held in Zwolle, Holland and England were represented by 2010 national champions Topflight Badminton Academy. There would be stiff opposition from other clubs who hold a professional status in their country with seasoned European players as well as a sprinkling of Asian talent from Indonesia, Malaysia and China. Topflight were placed in group 4 with Dutch champions and third seeds BC Duinwijck, but had managed to avoid the number one and two seeds from Spain and France respectively. The other teams in group 4 were the Hungarian and Swiss national champions.

Steve Smith and Chris Shepperd in action

The first round of group games saw Topflight against

the Dutch champions BC Duinwijck who, unknown

to the Topflight team at that time, were highly

favoured to win the tournament. Ben Muir kicked

off the tie with first Men’s Singles against the talented

Dutch national player Erik Meijs and Ben fell to a

hard fought 21-17, 21-15 defeat. Although not the

start Topflight were looking for, Ben’s fighting

performance instilled some resilient confidence in

the team that Hannah Littlecott took into her match

in the first Ladies' singles against Dutch junior starlet

Soraya De Visch Eijbergen. Following a thrilling first

set that Eijbergen just scrapped 21-19, Hannah

couldn’t quite match the power and accuracy of her

opponent in the second set going down 21-11.

Again this defeat only fuelled the Topflight team spirit as the match now went to men’s doubles with Steve Smith and Chris Shepperd having a very difficult tie against Rein Ridder and Sudirman Cup player Jacco Arends ranked 66 in the world. Steve and Chris knew a good start was essential and with a highly offensive first set they took it 21-14. The second set saw the Dutch ahead all the way and eventually levelled the game at 1 set all, but not to be denied the big win that would kick start Topflight’s championships, Steve and Chris clinched the final set 21-18 and the game.
With the tie at 2-1 it was up to Sarah Burgess and Kelly Holdway to turn the screw on the Dutch with the women’s doubles game against Marije Bloem and Annemiek Groenewoud. Both English girls played with immense confidence and control taking the first set 21-18 but a slight laps in concentration during the second set allowed the Dutch to claim it 21-16. This only angered Sarah and Kelly who came out in the third set on a mission to teach their opponents a lesson and with a 21-11 win they did just that.
Two games all and the mixed doubles saw Chris Shepperd and Charmaine Webb lose to the talented combination of Arends and Eijbergen and more crucially the Dutch with a 3-2 lead with only the second men's and ladies' singles to go. Yuehang Wang was first up against the tall and experienced Bart Gerrits; surely a step too far for the young and inexperienced Wang. Yuehang decided not to allow Bart to get a rhythm and made 10 smash winners to take the first set 21-15. Bart regrouped and took the second set 21-17 with some accurate play that left Yuehang lacking momentum. Bart was up at the start of the third until Yuehang played some impressive badminton that left the Dutchman with no clue where the shuttle was going and Topflight took the third set 21-17. An amazing win for young Yuehang and the tie was poised at 3-3 with just Beulah Moody against Annemiek Groenewoud to go. Unfortunately for Beulah it was a step too far and the tie was BC Duinwijcks following a 22-20, 21-12 defeat. Although Topflight were off to a losing start the team were buoyed by some great performances and could not wait to face the Swiss side BV Adliswil-Zurich the following day.
A turning of fortunes for Topflight on the second day saw a reversal of almost every discipline from day one. Ben again took centre stage first against fellow youngster Lukas Nussbaumer and despite going 8-1 down in the first
set, the fighting Englishman took it 21-19 and then followed up with an equally brilliant 21-19 second set win that sparked jubilation amongst the Topflight team. Hannah was the next player looking to get to winning ways after the disappointment of yesterday and was very impressive with a 21-10,

2

Beulah Moody
1-15 demolition of Simone Jegge in the women's singles. Indonesian

Yohanes Hogianto and Martin Contartese were Steve and Chris’s

opponents in the men’s doubles but the boys couldn’t match yesterday’s

performance and went down 21-15, 21-19. Spirits were not low for long

as again a determined Sarah and Kelly stepped onto court for the

women's doubles against Simone Jegge and Huwaina Razi and they gave

Topflight breathing space with a hard fought but nervy 21-18, 14-21,

22-20 win and a 3-1 lead in the tie. The powerful Hogianto and Jennifer

Kobelt were up next in the mixed for Steve and Charmaine and a

challenge too far as Topflight lost 21-18, 21-12. Topflight were up

3-2 but Yuehang had the unenviable challenge of taking on seasoned

EBU competitor Conrad Hueckstadt, which did prove to be too difficult

a task for the youngster who was out of sorts losing 21-3, 21-7.
So it was another all or nothing match for anxious Beulah with the tie

at 3-3 and it was the battle of the under-19s as Beulah faced birthday

girl Jennifer Kobelt in the second ladies' singles. The atmosphere in

the hall was reaching fever pitch as Beulah made a fantastic start to

the game taking the first set 21-14, having been down early on.

However, the nerves started to show as Kobelt managed to force errors

from the young Topflighter and she took the second set 21-18. Not

wanting the birthday girl to have her perfect day, Beulah came out

fighting in the third set and played some incredible badminton to gain a

20-15 lead only to see Kobelt come back to 20-19 until Moody played

her one and only smash winner of the final set to record Topflight’s first

ever European win.

Our Men’s Singles players in action: Left, Ben Muir and, right, Yuehang Wang

Day three and the final group game was against Hungarian side Multi Alarm SE Pecs and if Topflight recorded a 5-2 or better and BC Duinwijck lost 4-3 or more then Topflight would go through to the Semi-finals, something

that no one in England thought possible before the championships, including the Topflight team who booked their return flight home the same time as the semi’s! But it was not to be the fairytale ending as unlike most teams that had full-time players and experienced euro-club campaigners, Topflight were starting to show physical and mental tiredness with only one win coming the way of Topflight from the outstanding ladies' singles replacement Kelly Holdway. Kelly stepped in for the absent Hannah who had to return home early and she comfortably dispatched of Reka Sarosi 21-16, 21-13 in 18 minutes. Apart from a close but disappointing finish from Steve and Chris who went down 21-19 in the third set to Henrik Toth and Andras Nemeth after leading 19-17 and Sarah and Kelly losing in three sets, it was a swift victory for the Hungarians who closed out the match 6-1 to take second place in the group.
The Topflight team returned home on the Saturday and watched on as the live badmintoneurope.tv coverage of BC Duinwijck’s semi-final showed them defeat the French second seeds; painful viewing following the close game in the group. BC Duinwijck were not finished there however as they then went on to win the final against fellow Dutch side Van Zundert Velo with Bart Gerrits in the second men's singles, taking the all important 4th game to seal the match with 4 games to 2 and crown BC Duinwijcks as 2011 European Champions.

L-R back row: Beulah Moody, Kelly Holdway, Charmaine Webb, Sarah Burgess, Hana Littlecott

Front row> Chris Shepperd, Yuehang Wang, Ben Muir, Steve Smith

It was a great experience for the whole team and satisfying to know they were not out of place against the professional European clubs. All Topflight members were amazed by the atmosphere created between all the club teams and the realisation of what we are missing out on in England.

Well done Top Flight for earning the right of entry into this tournament. Some excellent matches played with differing results but what an experience for all the players. The atmosphere when playing anywhere abroad is always much more electrifying than here in England, where the game is considered to be much more sedate with polite clapping the norm.

Reports for the Annual General Meeting 2011
COUNTY SECRETARY’S REPORT -2010/2011 SEASON

Report by Hazel Marks, County Secretary
2010-11 has been a year of new beginnings in a way.
Trevor Shanks was elected at the AGM to succeed the late John Parker as our President and has proved his worth and interest by being ever-present at Director and Management meetings, tournaments and matches, especially the 1st team matches in his other role as 1st team Manager.
Another new Director has also made a very positive start. Steve Harvey has quickly got into the swim of managing our accounts as our new Treasurer. Once the Bank sorted out the details and issued him with a cheque book, there has been no stopping him. Sarah Moore, as our new Match Secretary, was quickly into action, sorting out fixtures, registrations and even her hen weekend. We wish her a very happy day in June when she marries Rowan Taylor. We hope their happy life together will include a return to playing badminton for both of them.
Mark Peckham enjoyed his year off last year and returned as Chairman of Selectors with renewed vigour. He was joined on the election Committee by Jo Dix, Kieran Dix, Chris Evans and Neil Potter .Together they managed to field full teams for all fixtures and generally the willingness of the players to turn out for the County was pleasing. The results tables show three teams finishing just below promotion positions. The 1st team promised much in the first weekend, faltered in the second and finally settled in 3rd place in Premier B. Two teams were promoted. The 2nd team finished 2nd in 1D of the Regional Championships, just behind the one team promoted. Similarly the 3rd team ended their season just behind the promoted top team in 4D. A number of junior players were blooded in full senior matches this year and next year just maybe we shall see the benefits of that policy.
Our more senior veterans’ teams have had an outstanding year. The 65’s have become double National Champions, carrying off the National Inter-County Championship and the National Inter-County League titles. The 60’s and 70’s also won their respective ICC National Championships. Previously only our 60’s had won the National ICC title in 1997.
We have one more National Champion to congratulate – Topflight Academy won the National Club Championship for the first time. They will be taking part in the European Club Championship in June. We wish them well.
During the 2010-11 season we lost three clubs: Portsmouth Community, Swanwick Airways and Zerbini, We were able to welcome two new clubs: John Pounds and Basingstoke Flyers Juniors. So we now have 72 Senior Clubs and 16 Junior Clubs affiliated. Membership numbers have dropped again by about 80 Senior Club Members, to fewer than 1400 members. There are 6 fewer Junior Members of Senior clubs, 139 down from 145, and 188 fewer members of Junior Clubs, down from 740 to 552. Once again the picture is far from rosy.
Sophie Jackson who had been our last Development Officer, and whose job changed to be known as Regional Officer, left us in January to pursue her career in New Zealand. We thanked her for all her hard work and wished her well. Her successor as Regional Officer is Blake Simmons and we welcome him.

And finally, my thanks as ever go to:

  • Nigel Tier and Bernard Lynch. The Westgate Badminton Centre continues to provide an admirable venue for many of our events and be the envy of visiting teams and players.

  • Janet Palmer, who as our County Newsletter Editor, has continued to keep you informed three times during the season. Reports and photos of events you know about are still most welcome – but still too few.

  • my fellow Directors, Officers and Members for all their support and hard work during another busy year.

Match Secretary’s Report - 2010/2011

by Sarah Taylor (née Moore)
All the matches in the senior season were completed.

Heavy snow in December resulted in a 2nd and 3rd team match being re-arranged for March. It proved very difficult to find much availability at the Westgate at such short notice, so the 2nd team had to start their re-arranged match at 10am instead of the usual 12pm start.

Congratulations to Sarah Burgess who reached 100 caps for Hampshire during the last Premier B weekend!

At the time of writing, the draft fixture schedule for 2011/12 has not yet been provided by Badminton England. Copies will be distributed for reference when received.
Tournament Secretary’s Report 2010/2011 Season

Report by Jan Harvey, Tournament Secretary
This report refers only to tournaments which are run by the Hampshire Tournament Committee. During the season many tournaments are run by Westgate Performance Centre, Topflight Academy Performance Centre, individual districts and clubs, all of which keep badminton strong in the county.

Entries for our Junior Restricted Tournaments remain fairly constant, although there were fewer entries in the younger age groups and more in the older age groups. The format of running all age groups on one weekend is working well. This season we decided to use the weekend in mid-September dedicated by Badminton England for Junior Restricted Tournaments. It imposed more of a strain on the Coaches getting the entry forms out in time, but worked well. Reports of tournaments have been in the Hampshire Newsletter throughout the season. We try to accept all entries for these tournaments and hope that players (and parents) realise this can at times mean waiting a little longer for games to be played.

The Open Tournaments, both Junior and Senior, have once again been oversubscribed – as I have said before everyone seems to like coming to Westgate!! Entries for these tournaments are controlled by Badminton England’s ranking and grading lists. Refusal of entries can cause disappointment and sometimes even offence!

The Singles Tournament in August is proving successful and will take place for the fourth time this August.

As always my thanks go to the tournament committee of Claire and Colin Byford, Diana and Graham Troke, Jill Robertson, Hazel Marks, Julie Newbold, Brian Woodall and Steve Harvey. This year we have been happy to welcome the services of Daniel Stride, now a qualified Tournament Referee.

If you feel you would like to help on the Tournament Committee please contact me for more details.

COACHING SECRETARY’S REPORT - Dennis Blazye
Over the year we have continued our coaching of the most talented junior players in the County. These sessions have taken place every Saturday during the season both at the Westgate Badminton Centre and at the Highbury College Sports Centre. These are age related sessions in the main but no child is held back if they are good enough to be transferred to a more senior group. The sessions at Westgate start at 9am and finish at 6pm with the Highbury sessions operating between 9am and 12pm. There are six coaches involved at Westgate and two at Highbury
Three Level 1 and two Level 2 Badminton England Coaches Assessment Courses were held over the year and a number of our Juniors passed the Level 1. The County Association initiated a Bursary scheme to help those within the County taking the Level 1 course whereby on application the potential coach would receive £100 from the County Association to help towards the cost of taking the course but on passing the course the applicant has to agree to give eight hours voluntary coaching to their club or the Association. This has proved to be very successful and five juniors have benefitted from the scheme to date.
We have been considering holding a coaches seminar during the summer period and we are helped in this by our Regional Officer who has circulated all of our 71 coaches to seek their advice on whether or not they would wish to attend such a course if one was held on a Sunday possibly the 7th August. Replies are still coming in but we do not know yet if we will have enough coaches to make it worth organising such a seminar.
We have been fortunate to receive a grant of £1,000 from the Hampshire Sports Federation Trust this year and this has been handed to the Junior Committee to assist with their funding.
Unfortunately, due to the financial restrictions operating almost everywhere throughout the Country, we have been advised by the Southampton Unitary Authority that they will not be able to agree to our grant this year. We have in the past secured a grant of just over £1,000 from the Authority but this will not be forthcoming in the future. This has in the past paid for our development of badminton within Southampton and for financial assistance to Players in Southampton wishing to become coaches.

Our Thursday evenings at Highbury College where Jack Webb and John Hodge coach a high performance group for the County could do with a few more players and I would suggest if there are any especially talented junior players wishing to improve their performance they should get in touch with Jack to discuss attending this session.

HAMPSHIRE JUNIOR CHAIRMAN’S REPORT - JUNE 2011.
"A VERY SUCCESSFUL SEASON"
All matches were completed by the end of the season although several matches had to be re-arranged because of the inclement winter weather.
The U15 team finished 4th in the National Team Challenge. Both the U15 and the U17 teams won their Regional Leagues and in the Shires League finals, the U15 came third and the U17 5th. A good effort, competing with teams coming from all over the whole country.
In the ICT the under 17 team played above their ranking and finished 9th.
Kelvin Latimer continues to make good progress and has represented England several times this season. Viki Williams has been successful with semi-final placings in the Nationals and has been selected four times for England this season.
Not only have many of our players done well this season on the courts, but junior Squad sessions have been well attended. Shirley and Alan Baker have worked at increasing the numbers of players attending and this is also reflected in our financial position this season.
Margaret Houlton, in her first year as Treasurer, has shown a surplus on this season’s figures. This was partly due to increased numbers being coached but also to fewer sessions when bad weather forced sessions to be cancelled.
A BIG THANK YOU TO SHIRLEY, MARGARET AND ALAN and to all the coaches who have helped this season.

Report by Jean Merrikin, Junior Chairman

HAMPSHIRE YOUTH BADMINTON TRUST

Registered Charity Number: 1006727

REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2011

Report by Steve Harvey, Trust Secretary & Treasurer
OBJECTIVE

To encourage and facilitate the playing of sports, and in particular the sport of badminton, by the young people Hampshire.

In support of this the Trust:-

Provides grants to individuals whose families are having difficulty in financing badminton to the levels of which the individuals are capable.

Provides grants for the organisation and sponsorship of courses for Leaders & Coaches recommended by junior groups and clubs
TRUSTEES

Mrs Diana Troke Chairperson

Mr Stephen Harvey Secretary & Treasurer

Mrs Shirley Baker

Mr Colin Byford

Mrs. Jill Robertson

REPORT

Four grants were made during the year totalling £927.00. This figure was higher than recent previous years, but the rise was not unexpected given the prevailing economic conditions.

Income to the Trust increased in the year due higher levels of Gift Aid donations and proceeds from raffles undertaken at tournaments. The only other source of income for the charity was the interest from the bank deposit, which is currently running at a minimal amount.

No applications were received in respect of Leaders or Coaches courses for young people.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Opening balance 1/4/10 £ 5390.35

Receipts 151.22

Payments (927.00)

Closing balance 31/3/11 £ 4614.57

The Trust banks with the Charities Aid Foundation bank and where possible encourages all personal donations to be made via the Gift Aid scheme in order that the tax element can be reclaimed from HRMC in the year following donation.

Due to the current economic conditions there is an expectation that applications for grants will remain at the higher level in the short to medium term. The prognosis for future years, therefore, is that the funds of the Trust will progressively reduce year on year and be exhausted within 4-5 years.
CLOSING
The Trust remains very grateful to its benefactors who make donations and/or carry out fund raising. Information about how to make an application for a grant can be found on the HBA website or via coaches.
Hampshire & IOW Regional Officer Report - Blake Simmons
Introduction

My name is Blake Simmons and I am the new Regional Officer for Hampshire and IOW. I have come into this post from my previous role as Assistant Partnership Manager, based in Poole for Poole School Sports Partnership. This role was both challenging and rewarding and I plan to bring the knowledge and experience I have gained to move forward with the development of Badminton in this area.

Now in post, I am excited by the challenges and opportunities that will be on the horizon. I also look forward to working with, and alongside all of you in the development of Badminton across Hampshire and the IOW. I would like to take this opportunity lastly to thank all of you that I have met and been in contact with for being so welcoming and helpful. This has made my transition so much easier. What follows is an overview of the work being done in Hampshire and IOW with specific focus on the Community Badminton Networks.
