1.3 Repropagation – bush fruit

A range of efforts were made to propagate the bush fruit, where missing bushes remain and losses have continued.

2008 - Attempts were made to propagate 18 accessions of currants and 41 accessions of gooseberry showing poor growth by hardwood cuttings (generally placing 5 cuttings per accession into a heated bin); these were mostly unsuccessful, completely in the case of the gooseberries.

2009 - Attempts were made to propagate 41 accessions of currants by hardwood cuttings; few were successful with only 4 accessions surviving. Attempts were made to propagate gooseberries by softwood cuttings in misted greenhouse conditions; 8 cuttings were taken from each of 73 accessions and 4 of each were treated with one of two different rooting hormones. None of these was successful.

2010 – Attempts were made to propagate 25 gooseberry accessions by grafting onto redcurrant rootstocks by a commercial propagator; 4 samples were taken per accession and only 8 out of 100 grafts were successful.

Prior to this, attempts had been made to repropagate the gooseberries by softwood cuttings on three occasions at East Malling, hardwood cuttings on one occasion at Wisley and by layering at Brogdale, all in addition to the original repropagation in 2002 which failed to produce full sets of bushes for a number of accessions; none of these later attempts had been successful and no further attempts have been made.

1.4 Accessions, deaccessions and losses

The following accessions were brought into the main collection from the observation plot on the basis of previous curational work:

2002-164

Additionally, the following accessions were brought into the collection from the genebanks at East Malling, which were deemed to be at risk due to changes in funding (tree positions are indicated within the new NFC 3 apple plot and a new Prunus plot on the site of the old PVR testing plot respectively):

A small number of accessions were deaccessed from the pear collection (with reasoning and further details included in the pear assessment):

2001-090

Pyrus communis

Comice Bodson

1996-026

Pyrus communis

Conseiller a la Cour

1935-019

1975-352

Pyrus communis

Seigneur Esperen

1948-438

Pyrus communis

Sos

Further recommendations on future accession from the observation plot as well as future deacessions were included in the assessment of the pear collection (Appendix 3).

The following accessions were, unfortunately lost through the need for removal of trees under notice following plant health tests:

1993-012

Prunus armeniaca

Puget Gold

1956-009

Prunus armeniaca

Farmingdale

1992-073

Prunus persica

Klara Meyer

2004-069

Prunus posegaca

Posegaca

1984-065

Prunus domestica

Vanier

1968-053

Prunus salicina

Great Yellow

Additionally, both trees of the cherry accession 1978-333 Basler Adler and the pear accession 1968-087 Farmingdale died before any successful repropagation was possible (the original Farmingdale tree was rescued from the old pear collection before grubbing but continues to fail to produce suitable grafting material).
