Endangered Species and Invasive Species Project


This project must be completed individually or in groups of two. You will research an endangered Texas plant or animal and an invasive species that directly or indirectly threatens your endangered species. You will sign up with me (no 2 groups may choose the same organisms).

You will write ONE report and create ONE tri-fold poster board addressing BOTH species. We will have a gallery walk and learn about a variety of endangered and invasive species.


Part 1: Endangered Species

Choose an endangered or threatened species native to Texas. I have a list from which you may choose. If you have a species in mind, double check with me before beginning your research.

Your report and poster must include the following information for the endangered species:


  • Organism name (common and scientific) Ex: Texas bluebonnet Lupinus texensis

  • Picture or drawing of the organism

  • Range: original habitat, where it now lives

  • Population (estimated)

  • Any special or unique characteristics

  • What caused it to become threatened or endangered (be comprehensive and specific)

  • How can the removal of this species influence biodiversity? Give specific examples

  • How can this species be used for ecosystem capital? (either directly or indirectly)

  • What is currently being done to help the species?/ What can students can do?

  • WHY should we care?***

  • Works cited (at least FIVE reputable sources)



Part 2: Invasive Species

Using the Texas Invasives website, http://texasinvasives.org/invasives_database/ , choose 1 invasive species to research.

Your report and poster must include the following information for the invasive species:


  • Organism name (common and scientific) Ex: Texas bluebonnet Lupinus texensis

  • Picture or drawing of the organism

  • Native range (e.g. country/ region/ biome from which it came)

  • Current range

  • Population (estimated) or growth rate, if known

  • Why is this species so successful/ invasive?

  • What are the ecological impacts of this invasive species?

  • What are the economic impacts of this invasive species? (try to quantify, if possible)

  • How SPECIFICALLY does this invasive species threaten your endangered species?***

  • How can we work to reduce the impact of this invasive species?

  • Works cited (at least FIVE reputable sources)

TIPS:


Use headings for the report AND the poster

Use the bulleted lists above as checkpoints… be sure you have addressed each topic!

Be concise

Use APES vocabulary/ terminology

THINK! Some of these questions require less research and more critical thinking!

Be creative… and try to convince your audience to save your species!!



Bring in supporting props for your poster (e.g. mood lighting, action figures, music, etc.)



Repurpose the trifold boards I have for this project!
