Appendix 1 - YPST
The Young Persons Support Team provides an effective and early intervention service for vulnerable young people (aged 8-16) and their families. There are 3 support teams covering North Ayrshire, who work in partnership with other agencies. The support team can become involved young people and their families through the process of referral. Referrals can be made via the reception services, self referrals, The Partnership Forum, education, children and family teams, Anti-social Behaviour Investigation Team, the Police, the Children’s Reporter and by the Effective Early Intervention process.
Individual contact with the young person and the Young Person’s Support Worker looks at issues such as:
-
Anger management: adopting the emotional literacy programme which looks at all aspects of emotion including frustration intolerance.
-
Family/relationship difficulties
-
Drugs/Alcohol counselling
-
Risk and consequence management
-
Support regarding education
-
Community issues/ behaviours
This approach may be used if group work is not appropriate for the young person, or it may be used in addition to group work where the individual can be supported to deal with issues, which may arise during group work or in addressing more sensitive issues.
Group work sessions:
-
Issue Based Groups: focuses on relevant issues with the young person. Different resources are used within the group like work sheets, games, and quizzes. Invited speakers come along to the group
-
Activity/Minimum Support Groups: Provides additional support to young people
-
Single Sex Groups: These are run depending on the demand for the group. For example, there may be referrals for a number of boys who require looking at similar issues and can be addressed in a single sex environment.
-
Duke of Edinburgh Award: This is run in conjunction with CLAD – New Start Project. Young people aged 14 and above who are offending or at risk of offending. Young people can achieve the bronze award and work towards gaining the silver and gold awards.
-
Three Town Motor Project: Working in partnership with the Three Towns Motor Project , in referring any parent or young person to a Parent and Child Group. The aim of the group is to encourage positive parent and child relationships.
-
Alternative to Youth Disorder Group: Targeted in a particular area and is based on referrals from the Anti-Social Behaviour Team. Working in partnership with CLAD and Action For Children, to reduce anti-social behaviour, encouraging positive use of local groups and prevent further referrals to the Police and Reporter’s Department.
-
Family Support: Family sessions address relationship issues, parenting issues and support parents and the young person to identifying acceptable rules/consequences.
-
Summer Programme: Recognising summer holidays are a time of particular stress for families, we deliver a range of activity groups and encourage involvement in local community groups. Targeting these resources at young people who are at greater risk over the holiday period of offending or being accommodated.
-
Diversionary Activities: includes many activities e.g. outdoor pursuits, swimming lessons, access to leisure facilities through the KA cards, allowing young people and their families to participate together and encouraging stronger family relationships.
-
Drug Information/Reduction Initiative: Involving parents and young people who are affected by addictions and is run in partnership with Adult Addiction Services.
Young Person’s support workers have a full case management role for the cases where the young person is placed on a Section 56(4) B in accordance with the NAC children and families protocol. This happens when the Reporters Department discharges the referral for the young person and it is referred to the Local Authority.
The Young Person’s Support Team has alcohol and drug workers who provide:
-
Advice and guidance
-
They provide rehabilitation opportunities to young people affected by alcohol or substance issues,
-
Support with self development and accessing other services
-
supporting young people who have been affected by parent’s/carers substance use
-
Providing an understanding about the nature of alcohol/drug dependency
-
Risk management
-
Encouraging positive relationships with parents/carers/family members.
