Stipend: €500 per month with additional £2,500 payment at the end of 12 months conditional on successful completion of the project

Working hours are full-time: 37.5 hours per week and may involve some weekend and/or evening work

Accommodation will be provided in Maseru rent-free, however payment for associated rates (water, electricity and heating) will be individual’s own responsibility.

Return flights to and from the UK will be covered, as will comprehensive travel and health insurance for the duration of the placement.

Overall Job Purpose
The position of Intern for the Lesotho Wales Link will be jointly responsible to the Executive Director of Dolen Cymru and the Chair of the Lesotho Wales Link (LWL).
This is an interim post designed to provide support for LWL during a transitional period within the organization. The Intern will work with the current Director of LWL to undertake a smooth handover of work in the run up to her retirement in November 2009 and work with the LWL staff and Trustees to recruit and induct a new Executive Director, proposed for September 2010. During the placement, the Intern will undertake a programme of capacity building within LWL, ensuring that the organisation has relevant policies and procedures in place in finance, organizational governance, health and safety, human resources and administration as required by the funders within the UK and by the LWL Trustees. At the same time the Intern will be responsible for ensuring that current activities and programmes are managed effectively and safely and for supporting the organisation to project manage the ‘Wales Centre’ initiative until the new Director is in post. The Intern will also support LWL to network within Lesotho and where possible, will seek out new opportunities for growth, development and funding in line with Dolen Cymru and LWL’s Strategic Plans.
The LWL Intern will also be responsible for ensuring that good communications and working arrangements are continued with Dolen Cymru in Wales and for reporting on the outcomes of activities on a regular basis to both organisations and to other external stakeholders.
Specific Responsibilities

To work with staff and Trustees of LWL to produce a development plan for the organization.

To work with the Trustees and staff of LWL to develop the organization’s capacity in the key areas of; financial management and reporting, human resources, office administration and IT, fundraising, project management, networking, communications and organizational governance.

To support the staff and Trustees of the LWL in all aspects and activities of the organization, reporting to the Executive Director in Wales on a regular basis and keeping both organizations informed on key successes.

To support LWL staff and Trustees to ensure that the corporate business and management of the organization meets the required legal standards for NGOs in Lesotho.

To facilitate the Memorandum of Understanding with Dolen Cymru and ensure that activity and reporting targets are met.

To support the Assistant Director of LWL to manage the finances of the organisation, agreeing and managing expenditure in accordance with the budget and financial procedures set by the Trustees and Dolen Cymru and other funders.

To support the LWL Trustees to manage LWL staff and Dolen Cymru volunteers in country, ensuring that there is a performance management system, with appropriate job descriptions, under which staff performance is regularly reviewed.

To support the LWL to manage all aspects of the LWL’s exchange programmes, ensuring that they are developed and managed appropriately in line with Dolen Cymru’s procedures and health and safety guidelines.

To support the development of the ‘Wales Centre’ plan in Lesotho. Liaise with Government, partner organizations and potential funders in Lesotho to ensure the project’s success and stakeholder investment.

To link with other NGOs and statutory organizations in Lesotho to raise the profile of LWL and ensure that it is represented in appropriate fora.

To develop strong communication links with Dolen Cymru, LWL and all those associated with the work of the LWL in whatever capacity. To share information about activities undertaken in Lesotho through the link with internal and external stakeholders through the use of appropriate technology e.g. website, newsletters and e-bulletins.

To work with the Trustees of LWL to recruit a suitable candidate for the post of Executive Director in September 2010 and to oversee a reasonable period of handover to the new post holder.

Any such other duties as may be agreed jointly between the LWL trustees and Dolen Cymru and the post holder.
