List of 10 most important scientific or expert journals for the activities of the organization and the number of papers published therein, with an explanation of the criteria for choosing exactly these journals

In the period from 2006 to 2010 the IOF employees published the scientific papers in about 60 journals indexed in “Current Contents “database for journals. The scientific activity of the Institute takes place in several scientific areas, especially in natural (geoscience, physics, biology and chemistry of the sea) and biotechnological sciences (fisheries). In addition, research work of the scientists of IOF is also published in the biomedical sciences (veterinary), technical and information sciences (oceanographic instrumentation, bibliometric science), and consequently the respective journals are associated with database “ISI Web of Knowledge" in a dozen different categories.

List of the most important journals for the Institute activities includes journals in which the most papers were published and journals with high impact factor. The first group includes

1/ Journal of Applied Ichthyology 27papers

2/ Cybium 19papers
3/ Fresenius Environmental Bulletin 12papers
4/ Acta Adriatica 41 papers

Acta Adriatica is especially emphasized due to the fact that it represents the Web of Science Journal of IOF, and the publication of which started in 1932, having an important role in the scientific development of the Institute, as well as in the development of research activities in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.

List of journals with high impact factor, in which scientists of IOF published their papers from 2006 to 2010, includes the following:

1/ Journal of Geophysical Research (IF = 3.08 for 2009) 6 papers

2/ Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Science (IF = 1.97 for 2009) 4 papers
3/ Physics and Chemistry of the Earth (IF = 0.98 for 2009) 4 papers
4/ Helgoland Marine Research (IF = 1.12 for 2009) 4 papers
5/ Marine Environmental Research (IF = 1.76 for 2009) 3 papers
6/ Aquaculture (IF = 1.93 for 2009) 3 papers
7/ Marine Drugs (IF = 2.86 for 2010 ) 1 paper
The stated journals represent the leading and high-quality journals in different research areas of IOF, and the presence of authors from the Institute is important for recognition and visibility of research work that is carried out in IOF.

It is very difficult to choose the most important publications for multidisciplinary institution such as the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, as favoring the "importance" of a specific research area and field before another is inappropriate and unethical for the science. Therefore, we’ve decided to choose the above papers as an overview of research activities in IOF, covering the main areas of research at the Institute. Common criteria for the selection of these works is the quality of journals in which they were published - all these works were published in journals with above-average "impact factor" in their own journals group, classified by the Web of Science. So that the paper # 1 is published in the journal ranked second place of 42 journals in the "Fisheries" group, and papers # 8 and # 9 were published in the journal ranked the 18th of 155 journals in the group "Geosciences, Multidisciplinary”. Paper # 9 was the reason why Jadranka Šepić, Research Fellow, was nominated and won the National Award for Science in 2009, while the paper # 2 was an argument for awarding the National Prize for Science for 2007 to the Academician Frano Kršinić. The criterion for selection of the "most important" paper is also the authorship of scientists from the IOF, because in all the papers first author is from IOF (except in the paper # 3, which was chosen because of the importance and influence in its research area).
