C/W original certificate of discharge and copy of service records. The 3rd Light Horse Regiment was raised in Adelaide on 17 August 1914. Back in Egypt after operations on Gallipoli, the 3rd Light Horse joined the ANZAC Mounted Division. Between January and May 1916, the regiment was deployed to protect the Nile Valley from bands of pro-Turkish Senussi Arabs. On 18 May, as part of its parent brigade, it joined the forces defending the Suez Canal. The 1st Light Horse Brigade played a significant role in turning back the Turkish advance on the canal at the battle of Romani on 4 August. In ensuing days the regiments of the brigade participated in the immediate follow-up of the defeated Turks, but were soon withdrawn to rest. The 3rd Light Horse rejoined the Allied advance across the Sinai in November and was subsequently involved in the fighting to secure the Turkish outposts on the Palestine frontier - Maghdaba on 23 December 1916 and Rafa on 9 January 1917. A stint of protective duty along the line of communications through the Sinai followed. The 3rd's next major engagement was the abortive second battle of Gaza on 19 April. Gaza finally fell on 7 November, after a wide outflanking move via Beersheba, in which the 1st Light Horse Brigade played a part. With the capture of Gaza, the Turkish position in southern Palestine collapsed. The 3rd Light Horse Regiment participated in the advance to Jaffa that followed, and was then committed to operations to clear and occupy the west bank of the Jordan River. It was involved in the Amman (24-27 February) and Es Salt (30 April-4 May) raids and the repulse of a major German and Turkish attack on 14 July 1918. The final British offensive of the campaign was launched along the Mediterranean coast on 19 September 1918 with the ANZAC Mounted Division taking part in a subsidiary effort east of the Jordan aimed at Amman. Turkey surrendered on 30 October 1918. The 3rd Light Horse Regiment sailed for Australia on 16 March 1919 without their horses, which were either shot or transferred to Indian cavalry units. $450*

Private, later Acting Sergeant, Ernest Norman Sims enlisted in the AIF 8/11/15. Sailed with the 23rd Reinforcements to the 3rd Battalion. Accidentally wounded and discharged September 1917. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, the battalion returned to Egypt. In March 1916, it sailed for France and the Western Front. From then until 1918 the battalion took part in operations against the German Army, principally in the Somme Valley in France and around Ypres in Belgium. The battalion's first major action in France was at Pozieres in the Somme valley in July 1916. Later the battalion fought at Ypres, in Flanders before returning to the Somme for winter. The battalion participated in a short period of mobile operations following the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line in early 1917, but spent much of that year fighting in increasingly difficult conditions around Ypres. $250*

2144 AUST WWI W.I.A MULTIPLE TIMES TRIO 27TH BATTALION AIF. 1914-15 Star (2566 CPL W E W HAMANN 27/BN AIF), British War Medal and Victory Medal (2566 CPL W E W HAMANN 27 BN AIF). Mounted as worn gVF+. C/W copy of service records. Wounded in action multiple times with gunshot wounds. The 27th Battalion was raised in South Australia in March 1915, after seeing operations on Gallipoli the Battalion in Egypt proceeded to France as part of the 2nd Australian Division. The 27th Battalion entered the front line trenches for the first time on 7 April 1916 and took part in its first major battle at Pozieres between 28 July and 5 August. After a spell in a quieter sector of the front in Belgium the 2nd Division returned to the south in October. The 27th Battalion took part in 2 attacks to the east of Flers in the Somme Valley, both of which floundered in the mud. Although it participated in minor attacks during the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line in early 1917, the 27th Battalion did not carry out a major attack again until 20 September 1917. On this occasion, it was part of the 2nd Division's first wave at the battle of Menin Road. Victory here was followed up with the capture of Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October, in which the 27th Battalion also played a role. Like most AIF battalions, the 27th fought to turn back the German spring offensive in April 1918, and later in the year participated in a string of offensive battles as Germany was pushed closer to defeat. It attacked around Morlancourt on the night of 10 June; acted in a supporting role during the battle of Hamel on 4 July; and was in the first wave at the battle of Amiens on 8 August, where it captured 9 artillery pieces, 25 machine guns and over 200 prisoners. The Battalion's last actions of the war were fought as part of the effort to break through the Beaurevoir Line in the first week of October 1918, but it was not disbanded until 4 June 1919. $500*

2146 AUST WW2 A RARE SYRIAN CAMPAIGN CASUALTY GROUP OF 3 TO CORPORAL ROY TARTAKOVER, LATE 2/2ND PIONEER BATTALION WHO DIED OF WOUNDS 19th JULY 1941, probably following the attacks against the Vichy French at Damour. 1939-45 Star, War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45. All correctly impressed (VX22460 R.N. Tartakover). Full allotted entitlement. Loose gVF. C/W original photo postcard supplied by the Director of Graves Registration. Shows the grave and cross of A/Cpl Tartakover. The 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion was raised in Puckapunyal, Victoria in May 1940. After completing its initial training at "Pucka", the battalion sailed for the Middle East aboard the Queen Mary in April 1941. The battalion arrived in Port Tewfik, the port of Suez, in May and travelled by train to Palestine and camped at Hill 95. It began preparing for its first action supporting the 7th Division in Syria. Initially the battalion did not fight as a whole - each of its companies supported different brigades. A Company went to the 21st Brigade at Er Rama and B Company to the 25th Brigade near Rosh Pinah. When the attack began on 7 June, A Company was placed under the command of the 2/16th Infantry Battalion and had three tasks: breach the frontier fence at El Malakiya, a formidable obstacle of barbed wire and iron picket; improve the approaches from the frontier road to the gap in the fence; and build a road across the fields to link with the road passing through Aiteroune. B Company had a similar task. At Metulla it prepared artillery approaches and improved the track from Mezudal and Banias. The men also assisted engineers to repair a crater in the road near Dan. D Company joined the 25th Brigade and also assisted maintaining and repairing roads. Several days later C Company came forward from Er Rama and began improving the rough track to Metulla for vehicles to pass. But when the Vichy French counter attacked Merdjayoun on 15 June the 2/2nd recalled its scattered companies to hold the Litani Bridge and prevent further enemy advance. On 17 June the pioneers participated in the attack on Fort Merdjayoun. In a reckless decision, A and B Companies made a frontal attack on the fort. French machine gun fire quickly stopped the attack and the Australians were exposed. Casualties mounted but the companies were pinned, unable to withdraw until evening. They suffered heavily: 27 killed, 29 captured and 46 wounded. Despite the losses the battalion remained in action for the rest of the campaign. It was particularly active in the fighting around Merdjayoun and El Mtolle and in the attack on Damour in July. Following the surrender of the Vichy French the battalion concentrated first at Damour and then near Tripoli, bivouacking in the olive groves opposite Fort Legout. For the next four months the battalion trained and conducted garrison duties, with each company sent to different locations as needed. In November the pioneers moved to Qatana. In early 1942 the 6th and 7th Divisions returned to Australia and the 2/2nd began the voyage home on the troopship Orcades. The 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 2/6th Field Company and other support units were also on board. However, the Orcades was about to be caught in the Japanese thrust. $1250*

2147 AUST A BURMA THAI RAILWAY 2/30TH INFANTRY BATTALION P.O.W. GROUP OF FOUR. 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal 1939- 45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45. All impressed "NX37593 J.P. COMMANS". All loose in box of issue. EF (mint). The 2/30th Infantry Battalion was formed on 22 November at Tamworth, NSW, with men from Dubbo, Goulburn, North Sydney, Randwick, Wallgrove and Wagga Wagga. The first 2/30th commander, Lt-Col F.G. "Black Jack" Galleghan, trained the men hard and they became known as "Galleghan's Greyhounds". The battalion was part of the 8th Division's 27th Brigade, the last AIF infantry brigade raised for service during the Second World War. At the end of July 1941 the main component of the 2/30th sailed to Singapore on board the Dutch ship Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt, as part of the convoy carrying the 27th Brigade. The battalion then went to Malaya and soon put what it had learnt into brilliant ambush and the first AIF attack against the Japanese. The 2/30th suffered 20 killed or missing believed dead and 58 wounded. The Japanese casualties were thought to be about 1,000. The battalion had fulfilled its task of acting "as a shock-absorber" and "inflict[ing] as many casualties as possible", before falling back. After Gemas, the 2/30th fought at Ayer Hitam and then in the defence of Singapore Island. However, they could not stop the Japanese and on 15 February the British commander on Singapore surrendered. The battalion spent the next three and a half years as prisoners of war. After the surrender the battalion was concentrated in Changi gaol, where they were used as labour for work parties, first in Singapore and then in other parts of Japan's Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. Men were sent to work on the Burma-Thailand railway, Borneo and Japan. Over 300 men from the 2/30th died during captivity. A lucky few were spared the ordeal. Prior to Percival's surrender, 44 men who had been sick, injured or wounded were repatriated to Australia. A few others escaped and managed to make their way back to Australia. But there was no attempt to reform the battalion. The war finally came to an end in August 1945 and Japan signed the official surrender the following month. Yet due to the large number of Allied prisoners who needed to be repatriated, it took some time for the battalion survivors to return to Australia. Those in need of urgent medical care were flown back to Australia in varying aircraft, including Dakotas, Catalinas, and converted Liberator bombers. The majority returned to Sydney in October on board the Esperance Bay. $750*

2148 AUST WW2 RARE FIRST BATTLE OF EL ALAMEIN CASUALTY GROUP OF FIVE TO GUNNER FRANK LOONEY, 2/3RD ANTI TANK REGT, WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 11 JULY. 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal. All impressed NX54993 F.M.M. LOONEY. All loose and EF. Gnr Francis Michael Massey Looney enlisted 27 June 1940. Served operation North Africa with 2/3rd A/Tank Regt. KIA 11 July 1942 and buried El Alamein war cemetery. The first battle of El Alamein (1-27 July 1942), although a stalemate, halted a second advance by the Axis forces into Egypt. However, an Axis presence near El Alamein only 106km from Alexandria, was too dangerously close to major population centers and the Suez Canal for the Allied forces to allow the status quo to remain; a Second Battle of El Alamein would be required to drive the Axis forces out of Egypt for good. $1500*
