Printer Driver modifications for Mac OS X Yosemite
Due to restrictions imposed by the new OS X Yosemite, current Fiery drivers can no longer initiate two way communication (also known as Two-Way Communication in the driver) with the Fiery controller when launched from an application (e.g. Full Properties is opened). To work around this issue, we have established a new service (or daemon, as it is known in MacOS) that runs on MacOS X Yosemite, which retrieves information for the installed Fiery printers and caches it locally on the OS X Yosemite client. This information is updated regularly, usually every 30-60 seconds, depending on the number of Fiery drivers installed. When the Fiery driver is launched it will read from the cached information and provides a faster driver launch (after first install). There also may be a small delay when server defaults are changed and updated between the Fiery and the client.

  • Due to the these changes, features that use Two-Way Communication, such as color settings, Freeform, Paper Catalog, and printer/server information may be up to a 60 seconds or more out of date when the driver is launched.

  • Two new processes called ‘Fieryd’ and ‘Fiery_bidi’ will be seen in the Activity Monitor when the driver is installed on a Mac OS X Yosemite client. These two processes are required for Fiery Two-Way Communication.

The following are the visible changes in the Mac OS X Yosemite driver:

  • Document Size is no longer available from the Quick Access tab and cannot be customized from the Customize Quick Access View. Document Size can still be viewed (read-only, as in the earlier versions) from the Media tab in Full Properties. Since this is an application setting, Document Size should be set from the applications’ Page Setup or Print dialog.

  • Pautoshape 3rinter Address is no longer an editable field, as can be seen in screenshot below. Users have the option of either enabling or disabling Two-Way Communication from the Fiery controller.

  • Iautoshape 3f a Bonjour printer is created, we now display the Bonjour name of the printer in the Printer Address field, as can be seen in the following screenshot.

  • COLOR PANE:

    • Calibration information (the latest calibration date and time of output profiles) displayed in the Basic Settings dialog from the Color tab will not be available in the OS X Yosemite driver. This does not affect any color related functionality and the information is still available from Command WorkStation.

    • Server defaults button from the both the Basic and Expert Settings is not available starting with the Mac X Yosemite driver. In order to retrieve the latest color information, close Printing Preferences and open Full Properties again.

  • VDP PANE:

    • Enhanced Freeform feature is not available from the OS X Yosemite driver. The enhanced Freeform feature is available from Command WorkStation.

    • Update button is no longer available in VDP tab. In order to retrieve the latest VDP related information, close Printing Preferences and open Full Properties again.

Mac OS 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9 driver Mac OS X Yosemite driver
Known Limitations:

  • If an older Mac OS version 10.9.x is upgraded to Mac OS X Yosemite on the same Mac, it is required to remove the previous installation of the driver using the Fiery Software Uninstaller (provided in the driver release) and install the new driver. This new driver will print with all EFI-supported applications on Mac OS X Yosemite, except for the following applications that are not supported on Mac OS X Yosemite. Newer (current) versions of these applications work as expected.

    • Adobe CS4

    • Adobe Acrobat 8.x

    • MS Office X for Mac (Released in 2001-02)

  • Due to the Two-Way Communication(BiDi) changes, there may be a delay seen when the Full Properties dialog is launched the first time after the driver has been installed. The delay is due to information being retrieved from the server in the background. It is recommended that all older Fiery printer queues on the Mac that are no longer being used be deleted in order to optimize the server data update for Two-Way Communication.

  • In the rare case where the driver is not able to resolve the bonjour name to its relevant IP address/hostname, the driver can only be used without ‘Two-way communication’. Instead we recommend creating an LPD/IPP queue with the printer's IP address/hostname, which should not show any issues with ‘Two-way communication’.

  • After the driver is installed, if Two-Way Communication has been successfully established from Fiery Features in the driver at least once and the client loses network connection, then Full Properties may still show as available. The driver is still reading the cached information on the local system.

  • IPP printing on Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8 - When adding a printer on Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8, if Internet Printing Protocol is selected and the queue is set to Hold, print jobs will not reach the Fiery. This is a limitation with Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8.

  • With Mac OS 10.9, while printing from an application, switching between different print queues consecutively during the same print session quickly could randomly cause the application to crash. An open case with Apple has been created and is pending resolution.

Additional Fixes:

  • Printing from Creative Cloud 2014 InDesign on Mac OS 10.9 has been fixed in this driver version.
