Contributions to scoliosis Research or Spinal Activities: The beneficial effects of the arrest of curve progression by epiphysiodesis and rodding for IIS was my observation, studying Mr. JK Webb’s IIS cases, at Harlow Wood Hospital in UK. This observation gave the idea to start a similar approach to young late onset scoliotics in Nottingham, (see our related presentations and publications). The study of the rib-cage deformity in infantile idiopathic scoliosis-the funnel-shaped upper chest and its possible aetiological importance for idiopathic scoliosis. Study of the segmental patterns of rib-vertebra angles and the thoracic ratios, an original method created by me, in chest radiographs of normal and scoliotic children and the changes which are related to rib level, age, sex, side and significance for scoliosis. This is a normal database to compare scoliotic rib cage shape. My contribution to the Nottingham Theory for Idiopathic Scoliosis is documented in the book Surgery of the Spine, Section 5, Spinal Deformity: Pathogenesis and Assessment of Scoliosis, eds. G. Findlay and R.Owen. Oxford: Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford, 1992, pp. 390-392,402-403, 405. The human gait and scoliosis is one of my interests. The implications of asymmetric gait parameters and idiopathic scoliosis are documented in a paper published in the Greek Orthopaedic Journal, under the title “Study on the stance phase of gait by the use of the dynamic plate Musgrave of children 6-12 years of age”. Contribution as a Participant of the Scoliosis Research Society Working Group on 3-D Terminology of Spinal Deformity, (Chair Ian Stokes). (Member of the working group). Contribution to the low back pain research using the segmental rib vertebrae angles (RVAs) in control and suffering LBP women, which is an original approach to the low back pain issue. I organized 1. The School-screening program for scoliosis of the Orthopaedic Department at «Thriasion» General Hospital in Athens, where I used to work. School screening is a regular function in this hospital, during the school period. An out patient clinic examining the referred children was one of the consequences of our school-screening program. I run this clinic and some residents interesting in spine are involved and extent their training. More than 400 children are regularly followed in this clinic and some 60 children are receiving conservative treatment with mainly using the Boston Brace for scoliosis and kyphosis. A number of papers studying various parameters of the commencing and mild scoliosis (10 – 25 Cobb angle) were another consequence of this program. 2.
