Department of Plastic Surgery



SUR3-4020/F PLASTIC SURGERY-CHATT

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.
The purpose of this course is to introduce the subspecialty of Plastic Surgery to the student at a first-hand level. The student will become intimately involved in a large volume practice overlooking a Plastic Surgery training program. Specific subjects covered are: Wound Healing, Soft Tissue Injuries, Tumors of the Skin, Tumors of the Head and Neck, Burn Therapy, Diagnosis and Management of Facial Fractures, Cleft Lip and Palate, Craniofacial Deformities, The Hand, and Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery.

RAD3-4010/F DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY–CHATT

The student electing diagnostic radiology at Erlanger Health System in Chattanooga will be exposed to daily teaching and work conferences and will observe the staff during routine radiographic work, advanced cross-sectional and nuclear imaging, fluoroscopic GI-GU procedures, and special procedures. There are extensive opportunities for independent teaching-file work. The elective's main goals:  (1) to familiarize the student with the role of the diagnostic x-ray department in patient care, (2) to familiarize the student with the critical role radiologist-clinician communication plays in patient management, (3) to educate the student regarding the imaging test-of-choice for most clinical problems, (4) to educate the student regarding radiological radiation, cost, and safety issues, (5) to allow the student to understand what their patient goes through when they order a radiological procedure or test.

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 14 credit hours.

The Chattanooga M3 Surgery Clerkship is organized into four components. Students will spend two weeks on each of the following: General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Acute Care Service, and Trauma/Critical Care Service. Orientation to the clerkship is given the first day of the rotation. This includes a formal introduction by the Clerkship Director, the Surgery department Coordinator, the senior resident clerkship coordinator and the Skills Lab Director. Each rotation has unique experiences to offer. Each has full-time faculty, chief resident, senior resident and junior residents as well as students assigned. Call schedules and duties may vary according to the rotation but will be clearly delineated at the start of each new rotation.

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.
This four-week clerkship exposes the student to the Surgery Specialties of Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, and Urological Surgery, with one week spent in each discipline. The course will be graded as Pass/Fail and is offered in Blocks 4, 5 and 10.

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.
The student will be assigned advanced clinical responsibility, under the direct supervision of the faculty, in the surgical management of patients including pre-operative work-up, operative management, and post-operative care. The student will take regular call rotation with residents; will assist in surgical operations, conferences, weekly clinics, and monthly seminars.

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.
This elective is to provide an environment with strict faculty supervision dedicated to the education of medical students in the medical and surgical management of critically ill patients: to enhance the development of technical skills and knowledge for the evaluation and treatment of the critically ill patient: to teach medical students to function as an effective member of a critical care management team: to encourage interest in critical care research and promote education of critical care concepts and principals as applied in this environment. The student will have some responsibility for 15-20 patients per week. The ICU medical student will be responsible for the daily presentation of their patients to the rounding faculty, resident; and multidisciplinary treatment team. The medical students will apprise the treatment team of the patient’s status to include but not limited to hemodynamics, pulmonary, neurological, and infectious conditions. The medical students will identify clinical problems, and present to the team his/her recommendations for intervention. He/she will be responsible for the daily documentation of patient care and the performance of invasive procedures under the supervision of faculty or senior level residents based upon level of competency as assessed by faculty. The medical student will learn the principles of coordinating patient care as well as cost containment in the utilization of ICU resources. All orders written in the ICU by the medical students will be reviewed and co-signed by senior level residents or faculty prior to initiation. Continuous supervision of this rotation will be provided by board certified/eligible surgical intensivist. Daily care of the patients and direction of the medical students and residents will be provided by these same faculty members. The medical students will function in the ICU under the continuous supervision of the surgical critical care ICU resident. This rotation should be considered at the level of that of a sub-internship rotation. Medical students on this rotation will attend the surgical basic science lectures, grand rounds lectures, and surgical M&M conferences. In addition to these conferences the medical student will attend the surgical critical care clinical sciences lecture as well as participate in the critical care morbidity and mortality conference. The medical student may be expected to present morbidities and mortalities that are pertinent to patients that he/she is involved with. The medical student will be on a 24 hour on and a 24 hour off rotating call schedule with the surgical critical care resident that he/she is assigned to on a buddy type system. It is expected that following call, the medical student will be relieved of all clinical responsibilities by 9:00 a.m. and will not assume any further clinical responsibilities until 7:00 a.m. the following day. This should allow more than adequate time for rest, relaxation, and continuing reading and education on an independent basis.
