Krujë is best known as the hometown of Albania's national hero, Skanderbeg, from where the Ottomans were successfully resisted for nearly 35 years from 1443 until 1478. The castle of Krujë was successfully defended in four sieges conducted by Ottoman forces before final capitulation shortly after the death of Albania's greatest national hero Gjergj Kastrioti (Skanderbeg).

[edit] Miscellaneous
The city's name comes from the Albanian word for spring, krua. Krujë is a tourist attraction alongside a panoramic mountainside location. Some of the main points of interest include the restored castle and citadel, the Skanderbeg Museum located inside the castle, and the old restored bazaar. The citadel includes a restored house from the Ottoman epoch that serves as the Ethnographic Museum. Unfortunately the fall of Socialist regime left a hollow in the regulations system, allowing the proliferation of unregulated buildings that are not exactly eye-pleasing.

Get out
Kruje is a city in Albania just north of Tirana.
[edit] Get in
There are many buses to Kruje from Tirana. They depart next to a market behind the train station (best to ask directions from the train station). The trip lasts about one hour.
[edit] Get around
Kruje is small enough to get around on foot very easily. It is built on a mountainside, with the one-street bazaar the central attraction, and the renovated castle just above and to the south.

The many souvenir, antique shops and carpet workshops in the bazaar, the castle with the national museum inside, the ethnographic museum next to the castle (an old ottoman house full of furniture and artifacts).

Some beautiful carpets, hand-made felt items such as slippers, antiques including traditional costumes of all sorts, and lots of more or less kitsch "Albania" red paraphernalia with the eagle on it.
