Computer Equipment

The Centre for the Electronic Processing of Data servis to support scientific and technical work and administrative needs of the Institute. The main areas of support from the Center are: the management and development of oceanographic data bases, development and maintenance of the network interface for database development and maintenance of applications for collecting data in real time with automatic entry into the database, developing and maintaining systems for oceanographic data, applications and developments Display georeferenced data using GIS technology, and maintenance of server computers and other computing equipment of the Institute.

We have built a local network that acts as part of the Croatian Academic network – CARNet that consists of more server computers with more than 100 personal computers, more special-purpose computers, multiple printers, scanners and digitizers deployed at offices in three Institute buildings. Server computers are located in a specially arranged system room that is air-conditioned with double anti-static floor. System room is the center of the local network, in which are placed the following devices:

  • server for address and static websites: Dell PowerEdge 1600SC

  • server of dynamic web pages: DELL PowerEdge 2850

  • database server (operating): Dell PowerEdge 1800, Centos 4.4

  • database server (development):HP ProLiant ML370G5, Windows Server 2003

  • management server measurements in real time (on-line) and their entry in the database:Dell PowerEdge SC1420, Windows Server 2000

  • Server for numerical models (operational): Intel Xeon procesor, Centos 5

  • Server for numerical models (development): Dell PowerEdge 2900, RedHat, Enterprise, Linux 5

  • firewall computer: Dell PowerEdge 1950, Centos 5

  • 7 network switches and network router

  • 2 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with a larger capacity for network interface,

  • communication devices for connection to an automatic oceanographic measurement systems.

The Centre maintains a computer lab with 11 locally networked computers for maintenance of various courses and workshops, and studies of fisheries, marine biology and ecology, as well as two additional classrooms with computer and video projector for the purposes of instruction and courses.
Research equipment is located in the Institute's laboratories, so that concern about the use and maintenance of equipment is related to some of laboratory workers who are responsible for certain equipment. All members of the Institute must previously to use of equipment have agreement with the employees responsible for equipment. The Institute's equipment is also used by scientists from other research institutions with the previous approval of the Director of the Institute in consultation with the laboratory manager who is responsible for the equipment.
