MEDIATIZED POLITICAL PARTICIPATION: TOWARDS A NEW MODEL OF MODERN POLITICAL PRACTICES
This article focuses on attempts to analyze the current citizens practices of political participation within the context of use of new information and communication technologies (ICT). Many scholars argue that political actors adapt themselves to the logics of media tailoring their news representation, choosing more populist and misleading messages and thus undermining the established policymaking processes. But it’s also necessary to pay attention to regular citizens who can benefit from the changes of media landscape. So called mediatization is the key element of the transition of political engagement and, among other factors, reframes people’s possibilities in political field changing their communication strategies, enhancing instruments of participation and stimulating political discussion. We define mediatized political participation as rational actions by ordinary citizens represented in the online public sphere of social media and aimed at influencing some political outcomes. It’s not about a political game changer but it’s better to be seen as a result of new “participatory” media practices that became available to the individuals since the introduction of Web 2.0 technologies. Just like regular users use Facebook to post some photos, videos or texts about their traveling and Holiday events, political activists mediatize their repertoire of political activities with the help of smartphones and wireless Internet connection to introduce it to their social networks. That brings some additional attention of the distant observers to the citizen political act and can mobilize new volunteers or involve new contributors and commentators. Protest movements become more effective in motivating new followers and in promoting alternative political discourse. City dwellers are involved in many social communities with competing political agendas and are active social media users. Through this big cities form special socio-technical environment that supports mediatized political participation.

Key words: political participation, mediatization, mediatized political participation, ICT, Internet, social media, mobilization.
