He is one of the biggest stars in contemporary Africa and is known for his magical guitar playing. In the mid 90s he made his international breakthrough with his first album 'Muso Ko' which rapidly climbed charts in Europe. In recent years, the musician has collaborated with Oumou Sangaré, Art Ensemble of Chicago and Eric Bibb. Early this year, he released his first solo album in seven years: Sôo. Singer Margriet Sjoerdsma pours emotion into her songs and it connects with her audience. The musical protégé of Rita Reys pays tribute to Eva Cassidy, who also could connect with her audience like no other.

At the age seventeen Margriet Sjoerdsma first came by the music of Eva Cassidy: "I was immediately blown away. Her voice has so much expression. It immediately hit me." Therefore she dedicated her fourth album to Eva Cassidy.

For her tour 'A Tribute to Eva Cassidy' the singer asked the brother of the deceased young American singer to accompany her on violin. Together they toured throughout the country. Due to the overwhelming success of this tour, a reprise tour was soon scheduled.

TRIBUTE TO RITA REYS
Rita Reys was Europe's First Lady of Jazz. "For half a century she was the undisputed greatest jazz singer of the Netherlands," the Edison Jury concluded in 2006, when she was the first Dutch jazz musician to win a Edison Oeuvre Award. With her widely acclaimed timing, swing and performance skills, Rita Reys gave her last concert ever in July 2013 at the North Sea Jazz Club. A tribute to this diva was inevitable and the club was the obvious location for the club. Two internationally renowned jazz artists, who have not previously performed together, join forces to honor Rita Reys: singer Fay Claassen and pianist Peter Beets.

During the last years of her life Rita Reys mentioned Fay Claassen as her successor in interviews. The Netherlands has few young jazz singers who met Rita's strict quality standards, but Fay Claassen was always on top of Rita's list. Partly at the request of the Peter Beets Trio, who accompanied the jazz legend for more than 10 years, this tribute is a fact. All of the beautiful songs that Rita loved to sing will be performed this night. Fay Claassen, will put her own twist on the material while keeping the memory of Rita alive.

SUN 15 MARCH BLUES / FOLK / LIJSTJE VAN JOHAN

LEYLA MCCALLA

Leyla McCalla’s cello sounds raw and thick. It is consistent with the spirit of New Orleans, where she has lived for years. Music is everywhere in this city. McCalla played her cello (and banjo and guitar) on every corner of the French Quarter, when she was not on the road with The Carolina Chocolate Drops.

In the spring of 2014, her debut album Vari-Coloured Songs (Music Maker Relief Foundation) was released. The album contains influences from her youth: her Haitian descent, music by Bach, the years she lived in Accra (Ghana) and the years she lived in Harlem, New York. But the poetry of poet Langston Hughes, nostalgia for times past and above all the swampy sound of New Orleans with its famous plaintive strings are what created the sound of the album.

With an expressive voice, McCalla sings folk songs with a message. Songs of African-American emancipation and of passion for pure music. Last summer, she made her debut at Lowlands and she can count the Taj Mahal as one of her biggest fans.

SAT 21 MARCH BLUES / LIJSTJE VAN JOHAN

From working at Chicago's Red Carpet Car Wash to appearing on national television, from gigging at the smallest ghetto blues bars to performing on the biggest international concert stages, master bluesman Lil' Ed Williams has come a long way. Mixing smoking slide guitar boogies and raw-boned Chicago shuffles with the deepest slow-burners, Lil' Ed and his blistering Blues Imperials - bassist James "Pookie" Young, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton - deliver the blues, from gloriously riotous and rollicking to intensely emotional and moving. Not since the heyday of Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers has a blues band made such a consistently joyful noise. Currently celebrating 24 rip-roaring years together, Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials ply their musical talents with skills that have been honed to a razor's edge. As much a family as a band, Lil' Ed, Pookie, Mike and Kelly have outlasted sports stars and presidents, musical fads and fashion trends. And together, they continue to make blues history with each and every performance and new recording.

DUKE ROBILLARD

What do Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Jay McShann, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, John Hammond, the late Jimmy Witherspoon, Dr. John, Maria Muldaur, Roomful of Blues and the Canadian band The Rockin' Highliners have in common? They were all involved with Duke Robillard in one way or another, either as a guitarist, bandleader, songwriter, singer, producer and session musician.

For over forty years he has been working from the studio and on stage with music styles such as jazz, R&B, Tex-Mex and rock, yet he always returned to pure blues. Duke Robillard makes full use of all his creative talents, something that is unique in the blues industry and rare in the music business as such. He is a complete artist who is at the peak of his doing.

007 / MICHIEL BORSTLAP & BILLY COBHAM
Michiel Borstlap - the James Bond of jazz - is a gentleman first class. His playing style is shaken not stirred. Borstlap has made his mark on the international jazz. He won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Composers Award in 1996 and he has worked with many international artists, such as: Pat Metheny, Gino Vannelli, Jimmy Haslip, Bill Bruford, Dianne Reeves, George Duke, and later with Ludovico Einaudi. Borstlap released more than twenty albums and wrote the composition "Memory of Enchantment ', which is the one featured on Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter album 1 + 1 (1997).

In this new concert series '007', Michiel Borstlap invites friends from his worldwide branched network of musicians, for an exclusive cooperation in the North Sea Jazz Club. The kick-off is with a very special guest: the Panamanian American jazz and fusion drummer Billy Cobham. A tough guy, given his resume. In the seventies Cobham played with Miles Davis and The Brecker Brothers, but also with John McLaughlin in the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Later he played in the band of Carlos Santana and meanwhile he has thirty albums to his own name.

What can you expect? Just like with James Bond: action, danger and lots of new twists. But there is always a happy ending and there are cocktails for the enthusiast.

ROBBEN FORD

Ever since the seventies Robben Ford is known as a leading guitarist. For the first time in two years, the musical giant play in The Netherlands tonight.

Ford, who Musician Magazine named as one of the "100 greatest guitarists of the 20th century", has developed a reputation as a solo artist in the seventies and eighties in the jazz and pop world. But was also as a member of the pioneering fusion group LA Express and as the sideman of Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis and blues legend Jimmy Witherspoon. He is also a five time Grammy-nominee.

Tonight, the 63-year-old bluesman plays songs from his album Into The Sun in the club. "One of the top recordings I've ever done" Ford mentions. And for someone with thirty-five albums to his name that is a striking remark. In his own words, the emphasis of this album is more on poetic lyrics and melodic vocals more so than what was the case in his earlier work.
