The Passion of the Christ' Mel Gibson's Movie

(Compiled by Frank Turvey)

CWM has concluded its investigation in agreement with comments made by a former Catholic T.A.McMahon that “this film misses the punishment for our sins that Christ endured from God and focuses exclusively on the physical sufferings inflicted by men – which could never save but only condemn us. This tragic misunderstanding is the very heart of the movie and must be corrected by anyone seeking to evangelise those who have been stirred to interest by viewing Gibson’s film.” [CWM emphasis -Ed]

Many Evangelicals have endorsed this film and recommend it as the best out reach opportunity in 2000 years but you may wish to read some more on that subject.
Five reasons not to go to see the movie at:-
There is a good article by Andrew J. Webb of the Reformed Evangelical, Presbyterian Congregation, Providence PCA Mission Church – Fayetteville, NC addresses the issue as to whether the film is the best evangelisation opportunity we’ve had since the actual death of Jesus. The author presents five reasons evangelicals should not see or recommend the film that include; its origins; its script; its theology; its medium; and its character. Webb concludes evangelicals are given a rare opportunity – to reject the world’s method and to recommit themselves to fulfilling God’s commission – to preach the gospel.

Apostasy is celebrated as revival, a passionate lie so near the truth at:-
Paul Proctor, a freelance writer who extols the wisdom and truths of scripture through commentary and insight on cultural trends and current events, states that compromised Christians fail to recognise the real battle being waged for souls. “It’s simply the truth versus the lie; a passionate lie so near the truth that apostasy is celebrated as revival.” Read this hard hitting article

If you are uncertain as to what the Roman Catholics believe, what Mel Gibson believes, what Gibson’s theological advisers to the movie believe and therefore what the production and message of the movie was for (that is: evangelizing Roman Catholics) then read the new Catholic Catechism at:-

THE POISON IN THE PASSION MOVIE
The script for the movie contains much extra biblical material, and is based in part on a mystical Roman Catholic devotional work by an 18th century German Nun (Sister Anne Emmerich) entitled The Dolorous Passion of the Christ. By introducing these extra elements, not only does the movie change some of the theology emphases of the Biblical account of Christ’s crucifixion, but it creates a false impression amongst the very seekers that evangelicals are trying to reach – of things said and done that did not actually happen! If there is any doubt, see the comparison of the film and the book documented by author Terry Watkins

INFUSION OF CATHOLIC THEOLOGY IN THE MOVIE

From a biblical perspective, the movie contains numerous glaring errors designed to promote the Catholic view of the Passion and of the redemptive role of Mary, as co-redeemer with Christ.

The truth is that the movie is a gross misrepresentation of Christ’s Passion because it contains amongst other things the traditional Catholic view of the atonement. In view of its sadistic content, the movie can rightly be titled: “Mel Gibson’s Slaughter of Christ.”
The fact that many protestant church leaders accept Gibson’s Catholic view of Christ’s Passion raises many important questions that are addressed in this review by author Samuele Bacchiocchi, retired Professor of Theology and Church History, Andrews University.
