Research Fellowship Program Supplemental Application Due: November 15, 2010 Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Mission Statement: The fundamental objective of MMUF is to increase the number of minority students, and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who will pursue PhDs in core fields in the arts and sciences. The program aims to reduce over time the serious underrepresentation on the faculties of individuals from certain minority groups, as well as to address the attendant educational consequences of these disparities. UCLA Program and Selection Criteria: The UCLA MMUF includes intensive undergraduate research, completion of a senior thesis project, and preparation for graduate school. Students interested in applying for the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship must meet the following criteria:
Anthropology Afro-American Studies Chicana and Chicano Studies English
Foreign Language Musicology Philosophy Sociology Art History Classics
Comparative Literature Ethnomusicology History Native American Studies Political Science Women’s Studies All students must first apply online for the Undergraduate Research Fellows Program (URFP). Instructions may be found at http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/urhass/scholarships.htm. Any applicant who has not completed the URFP application will not be considered for the UCLA Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program. The Supplemental Application is attached. In 250-500 words, please outline your previous undergraduate research experiences, discuss how and why you have decided to pursue the PhD degree, and address the specific ways you have demonstrated a “commitment to eradicating racial disparities.” As a future graduate student and academic, how do you see yourself continuing “to address the attendant educational consequences of these disparities”? C. THESIS PROJECT RESEARCH PROPOSAL Please attach a 250-500 word tentative thesis project proposal.
