THE FIRST PEOPLE IN CASTLEDERMOT
The earliest human settlement in Castledermot was around the Neolithic or late Stone Age time, but no one really knows when it was.
THE FOUNDATION OF DERMOT’S MONASTERY
Nobody knows the exact date of the establishment of the monastery at the site of the present St. James’s Church. The Book of Lecan records that the monk who founded Diseart Diarmada (Castledermot) was of the Clan Fiathach Finn and he lived some time about 500 A.D. Why exactly Diarmuid choose Castledermot as the site for his monastery is also uncertain.
