A baby hippopotamus, swept into the Indian Ocean by the recent tsunami, is finally coming out of his shell thanks to the love of a 120-year-old tortoise. Owen, a 300kg, one-year-old hippo, was swept down the Sabaki River, into the ocean and then back to the shore when the giant waves struck the Kenyan coast. The dehydrated hippo was found by wildlife rangers and taken to the Haller Park animal facility in the port city of Mombasa. Pining for his lost mother, Owen quickly befriended a male Aldabran tortoise named Mzee - Swahili for "old man". The pair are now inseparable, swimming, eating and sleeping together. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother. Officials are hopeful Owen will befriend a female hippo called Cleo, also a resident of the park. -

The IVIS Website

Antoinette Lourens
The IVIS web site provides a convenient way to access information on Veterinary Medicine and is provided as a free service to clinicians, researchers, librarians, educators and veterinary students with the financial support of private, public and corporate sponsors.
The IVIS library includes the following sections: IVIS Veterinary Books, IVIS-Hosted Proceedings of Veterinary Organizations, Calendar of Veterinary Events and Meetings and the IVIS Continuing Education and Auto-tutorial Sections, as well as links to hundreds of useful veterinary websites.

IVIS Books include the IVIS Recent Advances Series and full-text books in several areas of veterinary medicine.

The IVIS Proceedings Section offers a place for a growing number of professional veterinary organizations to publish proceedings of annual meetings and special symposia on the Internet.
The IVIS Continuing Education Section offers manuals of past or future short courses and workshops, and links to educational and interactive websites.

The IVIS Calendar of Events lists nearly 500 meetings and events.

There is also a searchable database of veterinary positions and educational opportunities, with provision for listing or searching positions using a built in search engine and online submission form.
The section on External Links provides over 1000 pre-screened and pre-evaluated external links to veterinary organizations, institutions, courses, diagnostic laboratories, auto-tutorial and educational web sites, dictionaries, medical and veterinary databases and much more.
Registration to use IVIS is free

CONTENTS PAGES SERVICE AND CURRENT AWARENESS SERVICE 2005
Marguerite Nel
The journal contents pages as well as the current awareness services of the AIS – Veterinary Science service unit, enable clients to stay up-to-date with new research in their field(s) of interest. Clients select a few titles from the journal list, and send them to their information specialist. They can also supply their information specialist with a list of subjects or fields of interest in which they want to be kept up-to-date. The information specialist will then update their profile, and the needed information will be sent to them by e-mail.
If you were subscribed to these services in the past, please renew your subscription (free to UP personnel), by contacting your information specialist. New users are also welcome to contact the library to enrol for this service.
With these services the information specialists want to support the research efforts of our clients. Please contact us with all your research and information needs.

BUILDING DIGITAL COLLECTIONS
Erica van der Westhuizen
We would like to digitise relevant older material, including books no longer subject to copyright (published before 1920).

Please send us your suggestions of relevant titles that could be considered for inclusion in our digital collection. This collection will be available worldwide in the same way that other university libraries have made their digital collections accessible to all.

Do visit the website of the University of Toronto, for instance, to see what we envisage:
http://digital.library.utoronto.ca
The Academic Information Service is displaying its various digital collections on its UPspace page, http://www.ais.up.ac.za/edu/upspace/ where Veterinary Science is one of the first collections to be placed there.

THE HUMAN SEARCH ENGINE

(extract from an article by William R. Brody, president of The Johns Hopkins University)
"Then the light went on! Full of Google-envy, I suddenly realized that we already have the ultimate information search engine right here at Johns Hopkins. It's one that is readily accessible and highly trusted. And it can be used to locate important references from credible sources, without getting a lot of extraneous garbage. Just think of what this Hopkins search engine would command on the NASDAQ market.
What is this great technology, you ask? Well, JHUSL stands for the Johns Hopkins University Sheridan Libraries. You see, our library has the most effective search engines yet invented — librarians who are highly skilled at ferreting out the uniquely useful references that you need. Rather than commercializing the library collections, why not export to the public market the most meaningful core of Hopkins' intellectual property — the ability to turn raw information into useful knowledge.
I hope by now you realize that any talk of taking our library public is simply to emphasize the point missing in all this Google mania: Massive information overload is placing librarians in an ever more important role as human search engines. They are trained and gifted at ferreting out and vetting the key resource material when you need it. Today's technology is spectacular — but it can't always trump a skilled human.
Have you hugged your librarian today?"

CAB ABSTRACTS ARCHIVE

(coming soon)

Erica van der Westhuizen
CABI Publishing is on the verge of launching

CAB Abstracts Archive.

Covering the literature from 1910 to 1972,

CAB Abstracts Archive will make over 1,860,000

records on every aspect of agricultural science,

veterinary medicine, nutrition and natural resources,

available electronically for the very first time.
The Archive will combine 17 printed abstract journals

(the equivalent of 600 volumes) into a single electronic

database, bringing to light important research that

has been ‘lost’. Previously only available in print, this

data has been effectively forgotten or ignored by all

but the most determined researcher.

CAB Abstracts Archive is set to change all that.

The Archive will enable librarians to provide their

users with immediate desktop access to this knowledge.

Users will be able to simultaneously search over

1.8 million records at the touch of a button.
