Regis Indoor Track Opens Season,

First Male Athlete Competes for Pride

The Regis College Indoor Track & Field Team competed in their season opener at the Reggie Lewis Track Center December 6th. With a squad equally mixed with veterans and rookies, the Pride performed well under a fast-paced meet that featured several division I and II schools posting personal bests, as well as witnessing Regis’ first male track & field athlete.

Sprints Strong in Season Opener

The meet was started off with the 55-meter dash, with three returnees. Senior co-captain Nadine Remy (Millbury, MA) led the squad with a sharp 8.32s opener. She was quickly followed by seniors Nadine Ambroise (Everett, MA), 8.65s and Hsiu-Yun Hsiao (Taiwan) who sped to a personal best of 8.79s.

Remy and Ambroise would return later in the meet in the 200-meter dash with times of 30.10s and 31.48s, respectively. They were joined by senior Alysia du Frend (Dorchester, MA) who sprinted to a new personal best of 30.51s and freshman Debbie Greenberg (Beverely, MA) who posted a 32.72s performance in her inaugural meet.
In the long sprints, sophomore Samanth LaFrance (Savoy, MA) had a solid first race, leading the team in 69.92 for the 400-meter dash, and was joined by sophomore Deborah Louissaint (Boston, MA). The 500-meter dash saw senior co-captain Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH) compete for the first time in the event, and finish in a time of 1:31.65s, the third fastest performance ever run by a Regis College athlete. Her time replaces Chelsie Restic-Metcalf’s time of 1:33.97, set in 1999.
Last but not least for the women, was junior Janan Rahman in the 3,000-meter run. Though feeling under the weather, Rahman still paced out an even race in a time of 13:45.46minutes.

Regis Men’s Track & Field Underway

Immediately following the women’s meet, the Pride’s first male track & field athlete competed. Outfitted in the cardinal and gold with Regis across his chest, Chan Chim (Lowell, MA) raced in the 800-meters. Chim executed a perfectly paced half-mile and finished with a time of 2:16.07minutes, finishing 33rd out of 45 competitors. His performance sets the school’s first male track record, a record that will surely fall several times as the year continues.

Pride Track Competes at Harvard,

School Record for Chim, Sprinters stay Speedy

Fresh off a great start at the Northeastern Invitational the weekend before, a small contingent of the Regis College Indoor Track & Field team took a break from finals and traveled to Allston, MA to compete at the Harvard University Open Invitational.

Keeping it Short & Speedy

With just a quartet, the women’s team focused on the longer sprints, with all athletes posting impressive early-season performances. The meet was started with the 400 –meter dash with seniors Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH) and Alysia du Frend (Dorchester, MA). Du Frend (a 200-meter specialist) lined up for her first 400 ever, running a respectable 72.16s. Haslam, fresh off her 500-meter race the weekend before set an indoor personal best of 69.46s!

Haslam would return later in the meet to compete in the 200-meter dash, and wasted no time setting another indoor best of 30.45s. She was joined by sophomore Deborah Louissaint (Boston, MA) and her fellow senior co-captin, Nadine Remy (Millbury, MA). Louissaint completed her inaugural 200-meter race with a time of 34.59s; while Remy posted her fastest time to date this early in the season. Speeding to a 29.91s performance, she won her heat and has positioned herself well for a stellar last indoor season.

Chim Breaks Own School Record

Meanwhile, the Pride’s first male track & field athlete continued to prove his hard work is paying off. Chan Chim (Lowell, MA) broke his own school record in the 800-meter run, dropping 3 seconds and barely missing a win in his heat. His time of 2:13.65 improved from his 2:16.07 performance posted the week before.

Regis Outdoor Track Opens Season,

Shot Putter Posts Top-5 Performance

The Regis College Outdoor Track & Field Team competed in their season opener at the Northeastern Invitational on March 21st. With a squad focused on training through the meet, the Pride performed well, amid chilly conditions, against athletes from Division I, II, and III schools.

Sprints Strong in Season Opener

As the team continues to train hard through March, acclimating to the weather and outdoor setting, the meet was used as an intense practice session. Over-distance was the focus with several athletes competing in distances they rarely run. Jessica Johnson (Springfield, MA) led the squad in the 100meter dash with a time of 14.86s. Samanth LaFrance (Savoy, MA) was close behind with 15.06s. The duo returned later in the day to compete in the 400-meter dash as well. That event was led by seniors Nadine Remy (Millbury, MA) and Alysia DuFrend (Dorchester, MA). Remy toughed out a 71s race while DuFrend set a new personal best in the race with a 70.09s performance. DuFrend would also double back later in the day, joining senior Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH) and Hsiu-Yun Hsiao (Taiwan) in the 4x400meter relay. Hsiao had competed in the 100-meter earlier in the day, and Haslam in her first 800-meter run, finishing strong in her heat and the overall rankings.

New Addition already Rewriting History

A new addition to the Outdoor squad was quick to make her presence known. Sophomore Katelynn Hamelin (Chicopee, MA) competed in the shot put, using the meet as an additional practice in her conditioning phase. With barely a month of training under her belt, and using only a ½ turn to put, Hamelin putted 30’-5” , which ranks her 3rd on the all-time top-5 Regis Performances. The sophomore will continue to train through meets, fine-tuning her reflexes hoping to qualify for New Englands as the season continues.

Outdoor Track Speedy at Tufts

Early Season Meet had Impressive Marks

The Regis College Outdoor Track & Field Team competed this past weekend in their second outdoor meet of the year at the Tufts Snowflake Classic (Medford, MA). Still in their heavier training phase for the outdoor season, the squad looked to this meet as another training session, yet several athletes took advantage of the warmer weather to post impressive performances.

Haslam sets 2 new Personal Bests

Senior co-captain Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH) literally wasted no time in posting two personal bests. Already coming off of her best indoor season, the upperclassman proved that her consistent training has proven worthwhile. She led the squad in the 400-meter dash with a time of 67.94s, almost a second faster than her previous best. She quickly followed that up in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.46s. With only the 2nd meet into the season, it will be exciting to see where her performances take her through the peak meets of April.

Haslam wasn’t the only one posting personal bests. She was joined by fellow senior Alysia DuFrend (Dorchester, MA) in both the 400 and 200. DuFrend ran a solid quarter-mile but posted a huge best in the 200 with a time of 29.82s. Their foray into the sub-30s zone wasn’t the only one of the day; co-captain Nadine Remy (Millbury, MA) opened up her 200 outdoor debut with a bang, as she sped to a 29.73s race, her fastest opener to-date. Remy would also lead the squad in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.30s, followed closely behind by Jessica Johnson (Springfield, MA). Johnson improved upon her previous week’s performance, with a 14.45s; as did Hsiu Hsiao (Tawian) whose 15.36s improved almost by .5s from the last meet. Other athletes in the meet included Samanth LaFrance (Savoy, MA) , who pulled double-duty in the 400 and 200, running respectable times in each, as well as sophomore thrower Katelynn Hamelin (Chicopee, MA) who used the meet as an opportunity to fine-tune some additional technique work.

Outdoor Weathers FSC Invite,

Athletes Brave Tough Conditions

The Regis College Outdoor Track & Field Team competed this past weekend

in harsh conditions at the Fitchburg State Jim Sheehan Memorial Track Meet.

Fighting gusty winds, rain, and chilly temperatures, the Pride toughed out their fiercest meet to date.

Regis Athletes Place Well

Focused on execution of their events, the Regis athletes placed well in many of their event standings, while performances from the day overall reflected the rough weather conditions. Senior co-captain Nadine Remy (Millbury, MA) opened the day up for the squad, leading the team in the 100-meter dash. She placed 14th out of 40 in the overall standings, and was followed by Alysia DuFrend (Dorchester, MA), Samanth LaFrance (Savoy, MA), Hsiu Hsiao (Tawian), and Jessica Johnson (Springfield, MA), respectively. She would return later in the day in the 200-meter dash with all 100-meter athletes in tow (except for Hsiao) with the addition of her fellow co-captain, Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH). This time Haslam led the team with the highest Regis mark, placing 14th out of 39 competitors. Haslam doubled in the meet, having also run the 800-meters earlier in the day, and was joined by junior Janan Rahman (Hopedale, MA), who ran in her first outdoor meet of the season.

Also competing for the Pride was sophomore thrower Katelynn Hamelin (Chicopee, MA) who incorporated the spin technique for the first time as a Regis athlete. Hamelin putted a mark of 9.01meters and missed making the finals by only 4 inches. Overall she placed 10th out of 29 competitors.

Outdoor Track Posts Top Marks,

Team Races in Warmer Weather
The Regis College Outdoor Track & Field Team competed this past weekend in much improved conditions at the Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet held at Fitchburg State College. After fighting the cold, wind, and rain for the majority of their season, the athletes excelled in the warmer temperatures.

Seasonal and Personal Bests for all Athletes

With much kinder weather conditions than usual for Spring in New England, the Regis Tracksters wasted no time in posting their top performances of the year. Leading the day off was a trio of sprinters in the 400-meter dash, all posting seasonal bests. Co-captain and senior Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH) sped to a new personal best (66.87s), which just barely misses the all-time top-5 Regis performers list. Her fellow senior in the race, Alysia DuFrend (Dorchester, MA) also set a new personal best (69.17s), breaking 70s for the first time in her career. Not to be outdone, the sophomore competing for the Pride, Samantha LaFrance (Savoy, MA) ran a seasonal best with a time of 71.38s.

They would all return later in the day in the 200-meter dash. Though the weather conditions began to deteriorate, LaFrance set a new Regis personal best of 30.73s, and was joined by Jessica Johnson (Springfield, MA), who also ran a seasonal best of 30.74s. Johnson had competed earlier in the day in the 100-meter dash, posting a season’s best of 14.35s in that race as well. 2009 Outdoor season bests were also set by co-captain Nadine Remy (Millbury, MA) with 14.16s, and Hsiu Hsiao (Tawian), with 15.28s, respectively.

Last, but not least, in the final event of the day, the Pride’s sophomore thrower, Katelynn Hamelin (Chicopee, MA), improved with her best throw to date as a Regis athlete. Already the holder of the 3rd best mark in all of Regis shot putting history, Hamelin extended her distance to 30’ 8 ¼” (9.35meters). This throw qualified her for the meet finals, where she placed 7th overall.
