6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK:
6.1. NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Rasashastra, a pharmaco-therapeutic branch of Ayurveda, deals with the drugs of various nature, may be herbal, mineral, metal or of animal source. Among all drugs, nucleus of the study of Rasashastra is Parada/Mercury. The various mercurial preparations include- Bhasma, Kharaliya Rasayanas, Parpati, Kupipakva, Pottali, Pishti etc.

Pottali is one such mercurial preparation, where the term “Pottali” literally means bundle1 or to put together. The general features of Pottali kalpas are, they are more potent, quick in action with minimal dosage and easy to administer. The ultimate advantage of pottali is its ability to preserve the therapeutic efficiency for a long time.

Pottali kalpana is first described by Nityanatha Siddha of 12th century A.D and parallelly by Sharangadhara. Pottali can be prepared by two methods, viz:

  1. By using Gandhaka Drava method.(Hemagarbha pottali, Tamragarbha pottali).

  2. By puta method using Shankha/Kaparda. (Mruganka pottali and Lokanatha pottali).

MRUGANKA POTTALI RASA2 is a unique pottali prepared by puta method, mentioned in Rasa Ratna Samucchaya2. It is explained under Yakshma adhikara, consists of lesser ingredients with an easy method of preparation.

Since, no work has been carried out on Mruganka pottali rasa, this preparation has been selected for pharmaceutico-analytical study.
