October 2011

    • 15-17 October. A short survey for preparing logistic was done.

November 2011

    • 10-11 November. Project preparation:

  1. Coordination among the internal team, including from Palembang and Bangka.

  2. Preparing materials and equipments for fieldwork: GPS, Binos, Monocular, Tripod and etc.

  3. Fitting schedule for fieldwork with team from Palembang and Bangka; buying ticket, fitting schedule on car rental, boat rental and etc. Team in this first fieldwork are:

        • Muhammad Iqbal (Leader)

        • Fadly Takary (NGO, KPB-SOS)

        • Dudi Irawan (NGO, KPB-SOS)

        • Ricko Faisal (local NGO in Bangka)

        • Ade Firdaus (Government staff of Bangka-Belitung province)

        • Awang (Government staff of Bangka/Pangkal Pinang city)

  • Conducting fieldwork in Bangka, from North Bangka (Jebus) to northern part of Bangka (Toboali and Sadai).

Birds of Bangka on 26 March-03 April 2011.
A total of 70 species of birds from 26 family recorded during bird survey in Bangka on 22 November-2 Desember 2011. This survey added 17 species new to Bangka after “A list of the birds recorded from Bangka Island, Indonesia” (Mees 1986). Javan Plover Charadrius javanicus which dectected in first field work resighting again. A paper entitling “The occurrence of the endemic Javan Plover Charadrius javanicus in Sumatra, Indonesia” was published in Wader Study Group Bulletin 118(2) 2011. We continue visited a traditional bird market in Pangkal Pinang city as the largest city in Bangka Island during this survey.

Monitoring birds threats on birds in Bangka

The major threats were observed for birds in Bangka are:



  1. the occurrence of tin mining activities in Bangka

  2. Convertion large remaining secondary forest for palm oil plantation and rubber plantation

  3. Bird hunting

  4. Bird trade for pet in local market
