New orchid record for Vietnam
Biologists working for Wildlife At Risk (WAR) on the island of Phu Quoc have discovered more rare orchids, including one species never before recorded in Vietnam, during the latest botanical survey.

Malaxis calophylla (pictured right) is a first time record for Vietnam, while Aphyllorchis montana is deemed data deficient by acknowledged experts. Only one single specimen of each plant was recorded and both species therefore urgently require protection.

WAR’s consultant biologist, Mr Ly Tho, is confident that Phu Quoc will reveal other botanical secrets once more intensive and widespread surveys can be organized as part of WAR’s long-term conservation programme on the island. Comprehensive animal and plant have yet to be conducted in many parts of the national park and on some of Phu Quoc’s smaller offshore islands.

The WAR-sponsored surveys on Phu Quoc are an integral part of a larger conservation programme begun in early 2007, in collaboration with Phu Quoc National Park, which aims to protecting the island’s rich natural resources, a vital part of Vietnam’s biodiversity.

These latest finds are believed to be just the tip of the iceberg, botanically speaking. During an earlier survey in May this year, a rare species of slipper orchid, Paphiopedilum callosum, was recorded in Phu Quoc National Park for the first time (read more).
